Just putting it out there, it does 0-60Mph a full second slower then my Ninja 400 which has less hp and half the torque at half the price. I love the 883, but it needs some love. Love meaning money. Money meaning a 1275cc hammer performance big bore kit.

I've noticed on all these HD reviews the reviewer works it into the monologue his height and weight, as though this gives some street cred. Most of these guys are lard asses. 6-2 and 250 is lard ass. Drop 75 pounds and here's what will happen:
    your back will stop hurting
the 883 will suddenly get faster and have loads of power
the seat will be more comfortable
your mpg will increase by 5-7 mpg
    your tire mileage will increase
Half way through, 3 mentions of height and weight.
    Keep going...

Its funny that you mention that because since this videos release I have lost 75 pounds. and guess what. The sportster is still an under powered, uncomfortable bike.
The reason creators mention their size is to give the viewer a perspective. Thanks for the comment.

If you're going to ride many miles.then first mod should be the seat. Changed mine out for a Harley Sundowner double seat.for riding 2 up.(looks ugly but very comfy.) For solo riding I have a mustang solo with backrest. Both are great but many others available.
If you're not riding more than 50 miles a day then skip the seat and go directly to stage 1 mods.
    Cheers from Denmark

The Iron is a great bike. I had an '06 Sporty that I put around 4.5k miles per year on. I lowered it with stock Iron springs in front and Burley Slammers in the rear. It had V&H Straight Shots on it, I blacked out everything from the bars to the wheels, cam cover and primary cover. I put a springer seat on it that I sourced from 3 different places. That bike was a hoot, and I made $1200 when I sold it after 2 years. The only thing they don't do well is long distance rides. They'll do 75 mph all day long, but they aren't a touring bike. Every time a see a Sporty with a windshield and bags I think, hmm, somebody bought the wrong bike.

Got 6000 miles on my Iron, I don't mind the stock pipes, sounds okay and it will run 80 all day. My first mod was rear shocks as they bottomed out too often, my next mod will be some 1200 belt pulleys for lower rpm in top gear. It is a well made and predictable motorcycle.

Hey great review, I have a 16 883 iron and I agree with all of your points, I am looking to mod the front pulley from a 29 to a 31 tooth. and also am considering a slightly wider and shorter front tire. The idea is to make it a little more freeway friendly. I have installed a FP3 and everything else is currently stock. Any Ideas ?

Have 22k miles on my iron. V&H short shots and screaming eagle intake. Agree with your points. Mine will do 90+ which is way faster than I should go. Highway pegs are a must. Here is the thing though, reliability is amazing. This thing just cranks and runs no matter what!

Great review! Just a question, where I live (northern NJ and our shore towns) it is very hard to go over 40 mph, are there bikes that are good for lower speeds? I have never seen a review that is based on someone truely wanting a lower speed bike. It is almost embarrasing to want that it seems? From my experience, there is more to driving slow that meets the eye, it takes disipline, and a good bike will have the gears to match that type of riding. Most of the reviews mention city riding where you are going in and out of traffic. My neck of woods is more a small residential town with what seems to be a cop on every other street running radar. The ability to ride at 25mph and the ability to stay in respective gear is almost never mentioned in reviews.

Thumpers (single cylinder) and twin-cylinder engines are ideal for low-speed, city, and real world riding.
They make more power down low so you get the grunt to take off without having to rev the engine so much. I think a lot of these guys do not know much about engines... or do not focus enough on the engine.
Sure, a screaming Four or small-bore engine is fun--but how many tickets can you afford? They are not as fun to cruise at low speed, imo.
Consider the SR400, S40 (Savage LS650 i think), and Rebel 500. The Suzuki S40 is probably the best [cheep $$] alternative to a Harley 883. It may require a jetting change because it is lean from factory, afaik. SR400 is a bit low on power. Rebel 500 is decent but it is only 471cc (not 500) and air cooled.
I think an 883 Iron would be fun. Especially with aftermarket pipes.

    • Robber30
      Robber30 4 месяца назад

Rich Isnetto The HD pillion that matches the stock seat looks really good with it, costs a lot less than a good two-up seat, and is decent for short rides and good for a few hours with an Air Hawk on it. If you're regularly doing long rides with passengers it's not ideal, but in that case neither is the bike.

Hi, I'm hoping to purchase the Iron 883 in a few years as to me it looks like a good entry level Harley, and I'm not keen on the street line of bikes. I am a 5'4" woman and am wondering if this would be a good height for me? Would be great if I could easily touch the ground. I was also gonna see about installing mini apes.

people who complain about things like wind and bumps always make me chuckle. There is nothing wrong with wanting a windshield and luggage and comfort, bikes today are way more reliable than yesteryear and because of such they get ridden waaaaaay more. That being said, Every biker should know that feeling of just you, the bike, the wind and the road. If you have never experienced that freedom, have you ever actually ridden a motorcycle in truth..?

Great review. Very thorough. I think you've convinced me to get an Iron 883. I've had my first bike for a year now (Yamaha XT 250). Thought I was going to be riding in the dirt a lot more, but turns out, I've really just used it to cruise through town and commute. I'd like a bike with higher performance, more power, and a better sound. I've looked at the Honda Rebel 500, but I think the Iron 883 will be the way to go. Thanks for your help!

Oh, about keeping track of the fuel. I use the B milage setting to keep my mileage after a fillup at the station. I get 50 miles to a gallon of gas so when I get to 300 or more I just start looking for a gas station. After a fill, I push in on the rubber covered button on the back and it returns to zero. The A milage setting I keep track of the mileage for my oil change. The bike also has a reserve on the valve. Up is regular, to the right is off and down is a reserve. There is also a way to get a readout if you are having a problem with the engine... never used it and don't know exactly how it works but it's there. I have a 2006 883c.

  • Barry Wind
Barry Wind 10 месяцев назад +3

Concerning power... I have the 883c and I find that the power is up there near the red line for that gear. I remember after getting my 883 wanting to pass a group of cars to catch up with a bike rider ahead of me. I was doing about 55 and had about 4 cars to pass. I was in gear 5 and started cranking it on. The speed was slowly moving up and got around 70 75 and the car in the opposing lane was about to take me out so I squeezed over to the line and just made it. I thought about that and said to myself I have gone over 90 on this bike so I know that it can reach higher speeds. Then it dawned on me how I had gotten to those higher speeds... drop down to 4 and twist the throttle. Next day I got out on the highway and tried that out in every gear bringing it up to the red line speed before shifting and wow what a difference. I was up to those higher speeds in a very short time. Lesson learned.
After getting this one I found that I can double the horse power with a 1250 kit for about 600 dollars. That was a bonus find!

  • Craig Pennington
    Craig Pennington 10 месяцев назад

Here is another one rambling on about nothing important. Those exhaust from the factory are 50 State compliant. Check your State for rules. Some will cost you a hefty fine for changing them. What's the lean angle before scraping parts? What's RPM shift pionts? What's max RPM the bike will actually do? If it's electronic, what map system does it have? Does H.D. reflash the map when in for servicing? What type of paint is used? What's the gear ratios? ect. ect. And no one puts the bike through it's paces on a review. To actually do it, you need to be on a closed circuit for legality and so no one gets injured.

    Great vid.
As a child I was always drawn to the sport bed they looked and sounded the the fastest.
After getting my licence I immediately began with a 1200 GS (my dad's) and honestly it was foable. I didn't feel like it was dangerous or or difficult to control.
But now I'm looking to get my first bike and I'm looking at mid size engines (500-800cc). I'm young did comfort important. It's gotta be fast but most bikes are these days anyhow. I really like the sound and look of the ducati monster.
As a child I always looked at those huge Harleys with bags and air bars and chrome... And I hated it. So I've never really considered getting a harley. But I'm thinking of getting one being that they are American and I'm starting to like the sportsters.
Being that the sportster and the ducati are both popular choices for those looking for a bike that is both stylish and can perform, I was surprised that I couldn't find a decent video comparing and contrasting the two bikes.
Are you familiar with the monster series? And if yes can you make a comparison video? Thanks

Very, very good review. Have seen many and by far this is the best. I've done a lot to my bike but rear suspension is probably next on the list. How's the cruise assist? I found using the stock one made the throttle a little sticky so I don't use it. For the fuel gauge and tach points you made I installed one of these. Take it how you wish and to each their own but sportster were the bike for me not that I don't think others are nice in fact there are a great deal better out there but the service on a sportster is what I prefer no chain/sprocket maitenance no valve adjustments a manual clutch no hydraulic shit and the motors just last the new ones that is the original iron head sportster especially from the 70s sucked couldn't even make a thousand miles without mechanical failure but the new evolution motor pretty good vs let's say triumph that needs clearences adjusted every 10k

I agree 100%. I have to say thats one thing I hated on some of the bigger bikes was the hydraulic clutch.

I'm turning 17 in 3 years, and that is required for a provisional licence in the UK, would you recommend this for a first bike? I have loved both the look and sound of it, but I'm still not sure

+Masked Gaming as long as you respect the power and weight of the bike, you can start on whatever youd like

Good video. But a couple of points. Pipes alone don't add any significant hp. Stage 1 upgrade includes pipes, aircleaner, and a tuner such as the V&H FP3. This will increase hp and performance. And, I haven't done it, but those in the know says it does wheelies no problem. Ride safe.
