Joel Makin has a good style of play, I hope he will get to number 1 in the near future.

Poor Makin. He was playing great prior to this also. If he can stay healthy, he could be the best in the world.

Real shame for Makin, he was owning Abdel Gawad. Also, love the movement from Diego Elias. His shots are still not tight enough, but love how he remains calm and sets the pace.

Elias so pissed with marwan dirty plays that he didn't want to hug him in the end.

Really tragic. Even before the ending I was like "Wow Makin is playing the match of his life." His left-wall rails were crazy tight! (Eg 2:15 but really throughout the match.) So much more disciplined and accurate than even a year ago. 😢

  • Ahmed Rowaey

Diego Elias shouted very loudly in the direction of Marawan near the end of the fourth game when he got a point. I thought it was very disrespectful.

    • flybynightrush
      flybynightrush 4 months ago

To be fair it was Marwan who dragged it down to that level. But at the same time, you're right, it would be good to see Elias develop the mental side not to be dragged down into that behaviour.

    • Ahmed Rowaey
      Ahmed Rowaey 4 months ago

@David Bolger I was live streaming the game and turned off the game after what Elias did. I still think such aggressiveness is not good for the game in general.

@Ahmed Rowaey I got that impression at first too but there may be another explanation as per other commenter...also with highlights it's impossible to know who started the funny business if it was...not unheard-of for a Shorbagy to initiate the dirty play.

      JO MANGEEE 4 months ago

nah he is sneaky he backs into players after he plays the ball (notice how got injured) confusing them and interfering with their game, once they get used to his style it will be a walk in the park!!

Not keen on Joel’s court shoes, they offer little in the way of ankle support. I am sure there are 100 million people think they are the best they have ever owned ( that will save you replying) but for me as a player who has suffered numerous ankle turns I have found that the Victor shoes made a big difference with regard to stability. Before anyone comments I have no affiliation with the company whatsoever but as a player in his 50’s I am more prone to this type of injury and have worn many brands over the years.

ryan teraverst Only speaking from personal experience and it worked for me.

there is no research to indicate that shoe type prevents ankle sprains.

Good to see Marwan back in action, he plays a very clever squash, tought he isn't 100% yet, he has hit so many balls in the middle or the tin, never seen a pro hit that many on a match, nevertheless he had opportunities to win the match

  • Luka Van De Kerkhove
Luka Van De Kerkhove 4 months ago +14

Such a shame for makin, he would have won that game! Unfortunate

  • Stefan Peters
Stefan Peters 4 months ago +16

I think that should have been a Let for Elias against Marwan 16:28 , hip-checking is not allowed in squash, that was deliberate and aggressive

    • Peter Eedy
      Peter Eedy 4 months ago

If you watch the slow-motion, you will see that Elias (who had played a loose shot, then positioned himself poorly behind El Shorbagy) actually runs into El Shorbagy before the ball has hit the front wall (i.e. El Shorbagy is still the striker) -- El Shorbagy was moving back to the T whilst the ball was hugging the side wall. In my view, "No let"

    • watching99134
      watching99134 4 months ago +1

@klowd9200 He returns his weight to his left foot and his hip slides back a little...might be natural movement but if it creates interference it's a let.

    • Edmund Yap
      Edmund Yap 4 months ago

totally disagree with u, first, u must understand, elias did a loose cross court and marwan was right there to volley it. there's no point looking at marwan's movement because he's right there to open up his position to do whatever he wants.

    • NotempoT
      NotempoT 4 months ago +6

Agree Stefan. I watched it again to be sure before I commented. Left foot moves, and gets put down again (in a forward spot) in Diego's path. Commenters picked up on it immediately too..."naughty movement" they say. Many players do this, some more than others, and but some do it so often that it alters the outcome of matches.

    • M0odez
      M0odez 4 months ago

@klowd9200 I agree that it's fair movement. He starts to generate the momentum before even making contact with the ball and beyond that it's all still in his follow-through. Deliberate occupation of the space for sure but timing-wise it's completely reasonable to do so.

What a shame for Makin, was playing exceptional squash and was sure to best Gawad. No foul play, just really unfortunate for him.
