Victor Borge - Turning pages (1970) - English subtitles

  • Published on Jul 7, 2020
  • ★★★ My playlist with Victor Borge videos: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mrbP...
Excerpt from a Victor Borge show which took place at The Glass Hall Theatre in Tivoli, Copenhagen, Denmark (1970).
Børge Rosenbaum (3 January 1909 - 23 December 2000), known professionally as Victor Borge, was a Danish comedian, conductor, and pianist who achieved great popularity in radio and television in the United States and Europe. His blend of music and comedy earned him the nicknames "The Clown Prince of Denmark", "The Unmelancholy Dane" and "The Great Dane".
I have uploaded this video with English subtitles, as a gesture to all non-Danish speaking fans of Mr. Borge. I think they add a lot of value for many viewers. Enjoy !
From a desktop computer, click the CC icon in the lower right corner of the video to turn subtitles on or off. Click the Settings icon to switch to another language (if available) or to turn on auto-translate to your preferred language. On an Ipad, the CC icon is located in the upper right corner.
If you would like to translate the subtitles into your own language, then drop me a mail (check the About tab of my channel), and I will send you the English subtitles as a text file. You will then get my timing "for free" (please note that only the Danish speech part has been subtitled). You can now create your own file with subtitles, which you can mail back to me. You are also much welcome to translate the video title and description as well. Thanks in advance!
I put a lot of efforts into my videos.

@Peter Wood There is a recording of claire de lune somewhere on youtube and when I first listened to it I was amazed by his play. There was so much love he put into the music and his touch was so delicate. I don't think I have ever seen anyone play like this.

I heard a story about a show he did where he noticed a group in the front that wasn't laughing at any of the jokes, no matter what he tried, so he eventually just asked them what the problem was. I think it was an English show, and the group didn't speak English. They could barely put together "we came to hear the music, please play the music". And he did, immediately.

I am a big Rowan Atkinson fan and I can't help finding a similar sense of humor, maybe mr. Atkinson found a source of inspiration on Borge's performances to create Mr. Bean

I think not many people realise how difficult it is to THINK and CREATE this show. With only a Piano, a Bench, Papers and another Actor...VICTOR BORGE managed to made us laugh and make us wonder how he can think of such unique and clever jokes that nobody else thought of.

Apparently, when he was playing the music upside down or sideways, he was really playing the notes as they were- upside down and sideways. Extraordinarily accomplished (as well as being so funny)!

Ian Moltrup 11 months ago +29

The notes on the pages look more like they belong to some etudes or practice material than the actual songs he is playing. He's got the whole bit memorized for sure and is just using the paper for comedic effect.

    • Polymath9
      Polymath9 11 months ago +42

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depends on which perspective you are in) he’s not. His music are deliberately composed to make the audiences to establish the connection between the original music and the “flipped” music, which makes the joke works. But if you really try to strictly play the music upside down, it would be different from this and sounds more unpleasant.
