The lack of subtitles in the very short Spanish sequences is actually a pretty genius move, as it is supposed to give the audience a more immersive experience, as if we were right close to them, to the point of not having automatic subtitles coming when we don’t understand the language.
It's about realism and empathy. English is not my first language so I can understand the urge to learn it in order to empower myself. That’s why Anita saying “speak English” to Maria and Bernardo speaks volume about their experience in America. It’s the kind of cultural and poignant detail coming from the important, relevant and universal theme that is immigration in WSS, that I think a lot of people are sadly not grasping.

For the people worrying that they're missing parts of the story:
You're not. Most of the time, the characters say it in both languages. When they don't it's because that's not new information, and so they want to focus on the characters' emotions. So nothing to worry about.

I literally just left the theater. The entire movie is phenomenal. Brilliant. Still as relevant as the original maybe even more so. The layers this movie has we're so well done. And the song "America" was the dance number I was most excited to see. FRICKIN' INCREDIBLE ❤️. It was powerful, and stunning to look at and so high energy. Loved that it was transplanted to the streets.

I did not think it was possible for a 'remake' of an already legendary movie to actually be this good. But not only is it great, it is by every personal metric of mine better. The cinematography, the lighting, the dancing, the book, the acting, the sets, the choreography, the editing, and -- most surprisingly -- the music. The singing is a matter of preference, but the actual orchestra in the score had so much more fire to it. Then I saw it was conducted by Gustavo Dudamel and it all made sense. Spielberg, Kushner, and the team went into this movie with a real vision and I knew from the opening number that I was in for a treat.

This movie will be remembered as a masterpiece in the future. Mark my words. Box office numbers aren't relevant during a pandemic. Spielberg’s adaptation is far more realistic and accurate. One can’t make a movie about racism with racist methods. I never realized that until now, but seeing actual actors of Latin descent playing the Sharks gives the story a whole new dimension, a more respectful and thus more powerful representation of the story. The emotional impact is thus much more impactful in Spielberg’s version.

Box office numbers don't mean a thing in regards to a film's legacy anyway. It's a Wonderful Life, The Shawshank Redemption, The Big Lebowski. None of these films actually performed well at the box office and they're all some of the most remembered films of their year.

Love how this number manages to balance very real concerns marginalized communities have to live with with this beautiful moment of a community embracing their culture: finding joy in the small things during hard and anxious times is a dichotomy few types of media can portray without seeming tone deaf or overly dark, and musical theater is perfect for it

Me too. It was the perfect move by Spielberg to take the number out on the neighbourhoods of New York. It made it so huge, so colourful, a festivity that everybody took part. Like an old style big Hollywood outdoor musical production. I was smiling all along and I wouldn’t mind if it lasted 5 minutes longer.

That “rhythm” she’s talking about can actually be explained. This song actually alternates between 3:4 and a 6:8 time every measure. It creates an infectious flow on the more dense 6:8 bits offset by the bombastic and pounding stabs of the 3:4 bars. For example…
The bar “In-dust-ry boom in A-“ is in 6:8, there’s a little bit more swing to it. And then the next bar just stomped on you with the 3:4 time: “mer-i-ca”.

This movie deserved to do better at the box office than it did. If it had been released during the Thanksgiving holiday instead of around Christmas, it would have done much better because then it wouldn't have to compete with bigger titles like "Spider-Man" and "Matrix Resurrections." Its only competition would have been "House of Gucci," and this would have crushed it. For me, Spielberg tops Sir Ridley any day...

I shook my head in disbelief at what I was watching onscreen during this scene. No disrespect to the original film, and Rita Moreno's INCREDIBLE performance during that number...but it was just set on a faux rooftop on a soundstage. Spielberg had the audacity to not only take on that iconic number but stage it across multiple locations, hundreds of extras, with actors running through the streets...and he pulled it off brillantly. It's one of the best musical numbers ever on film.

Just watched this movie and it was great!!!. I enjoyed the original West Side Story and this New Version from one of my favorite produces Steven Spielberg was definitely not disappointing. Living in New York in the 60s in the South Bronx it brought about a lot of memories as I remember playing stick ball in a dead end street, between several 6 story buildings and using the parked vehicle fenders and bumpers as baseball bases. The soft balls bouncing off the tall 6 story structures as we would run at full speed to catch the ball before it dropped to the floor, sometimes we would dangerously launching over obstacles to make the catch(DOM LOL) but fun. I want to give the movie a plus as there were no Spanish Captions on screen when the actors spoke in Spanish(WOW). The actors Latino NY PR cultural genre was of what I remember growing up hearing with friends and family, that almost made it feel a private joke for those in the audience like myself that spoke both English and Spanish and understood the comical language that was used at the time (60s and 70s). Fell in love Rachel Zegler a mix Hispanic actress and soon to be a "STAR"... The movie was funny , entertaining, romantic and full of energy. Would definitely recommend to see. (A+)

Naya Rivera did an Amazing Job Playing Anita in that One Glee Episode. Even Though I thought the 2021 West Side Story Anita Actress did good too, it just makes me Reminisce Naya Rivera RIP ❤️❤️❤️
Oh and Mark Salling didn’t do a good job playing Bernardo, Puck did.

Naya would have made a beautiful Anita in the 2021 movie. I wish she hadn't been taken from us so soon.

Yesss, love Naya! Ariana seems to have done a great job, looking forward to seeing this. I just can’t help but think about how (as well as her Glee performances) Naya literally auditioned for this role and it makes me sad to think of all her potential 💔
