Happiness is all in your mind: Gen Kelsang Nyema at TEDxGreenville 2014

  • Published on Jun 15, 2014
  • Simple, profound truths are the realm of this Buddhist nun. Her message? The gift of happiness truly lies within our own hearts and minds. Gen Kelsang Nyema, exuding a peacefulness that immediately connects with the audience, starts by asking three questions: Are you having a good day? Why? Tomorrow, would you rather have a good day or a bad day? She teaches that we cannot put our happiness at the whim of other people and of circumstances. If we want to be happy, we have to "stop outsourcing our happiness to other people" and cultivate a source of inner peace. What happens next is quite astounding. The whole crowd of 350+ people proceeds to meditate with Nyema. There's a little squirming at first, but as she leads the audience through a calm citation of how to rest the mind, audience members feel a collective relaxation flow into the room and through the people. Fascinating! Refreshing.
This talk was part of TEDxGreenville UNZIPPED, held April 11, 2014, at the Kroc Center in Greenville, South Carolina. For more information about Gen Nyema and her co-presenters, please visit tedxgreenville.com/2014presenters

Buddhism is the least harmful of the major religions. But it's still a religion. "My teacher.. My teacher..." The rhetoric is tired and uninspired because it is not derived directly from the source. There is transparent contradiction with issue of "outsourcing". And i find her energy and demeanor to be a akin to to someone on meds. A suppression of true self. Discipline is not a simple thing to cultivate. And if you just adopt an commercial product (religion or meds) you will lose this opportunity. For many that is fine because it's just too intense to become a full fledged spiritual and physical being.

The answer to your question is Fate:
If I am happy today, I am happy because of my Fate. And if I am not happy today, I am not happy because of my Fate.
So to understand the Fate: First you have to know yourself when you know yourself, you will understand the Fate otherwise you will never understand the Fate.!

The NKT is a harmful exploitative cult. They use tone of voice, pauses, questioning and other techniques such as synchronised chanting and "guided meditation" to increase suggestibility and brainwash their followers.
Most authentic Buddhist groups stay well away from the New Kadampa Tradition.

  • New Kadampa Tradition Survivors & Supporters

In actuality, this organization she is from (New Kadampa Tradition aka NKT) is highly controversial and you can just as easily find videos of her group with fists in the air, scowling, banging drums outside of teachings attended by Tibetan and Nepalese refugees. There are also many people who have come forward reporting spiritual abuse by the NKT.

Great technique of outsourcing of happiness/ peace is the state of mind /this why happening and why - how I am responding in that circumstances

  • buddhism is universal truths

The noble bodhisattva, Avalokitesvara, being engaged in practicing the
deep transcendental wisdom-discipline, looked down from above upon the
five skandhas /(aggregates), and saw that in their /svabhava
/(self-being) they are devoid of substance.
Here, O Sariputra, bodily-form is voidness; verily, voidness is
bodily-form. Apart from bodily-form there is no voidness; so apart from
    voidness there is no bodily-form. That which is voidness is bodily-form;
that which is bodily-form is voidness. Likewise (the four aggregates)
feeling, perception, mental imaging, and consciousness (are devoid of
Here, O Sariputra, all phenomena of existence are characterized by
voidness: neither born nor annihilated, neither blemished nor
    immaculate, neither deficient nor overfilled.
Therefore, O Sariputra, in voidness there is no bodily-form, no feeling,
no mental imaging, no consciousness; no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or
mind; no sense objects of bodily-form, sound, smell, taste, or touchable
states; no visual element, and so forth, until one comes to no
mind-cognition element. There is no ignorance, nor extinction of
ignorance, until we come to: no aging and death, nor extinction of aging
    and death. There is no suffering, no origination, no cessation, no path;
there is no higher knowledge, no attainment (of nirvana), no nonattainment.
Therefore, O Sariputra, by reason of his nonattainment (of nirvana), the
bodhisattva, having resorted to prajnaparamita (transcendental
wisdom), dwells serenely with perfect mental freedom. By his
non-possession of mental impediments (the bodhisattva) without fear,
having surpassed all perversions, attains the unattainable (bliss of)
All Buddhas, self-appointed to appear in the three periods of time
(past, present, and future), having resorted to the incomparable
/prajnaparamita/, have become fully awake to /samyak sambodhi/ (absolute
    perfect enlightenment).
Therefore prajnaparamita should be recognized as the great mantra, the
mantra of great wisdom, the most sublime mantra, the incomparable mantra
and the alleviator of all suffering; it is truth by reason of its being
nonfalsehood. This is the mantra proclaimed in prajnaparamita. It is:
Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone altogether beyond (to the other shore)! O
    enlightenment! Be it so! Hail!
    (This concludes the Prajnaparamita-Hridaya-Sutra)
