SO GOOD, i love how realistic this rendition is, in that they actually sound like they are arguing and not fighting to sing over each other. Anita also sounds hurt and genuinely concerned for her, not just enraged. this is my favorite number from the film! i also loved "maria"
She DOES slap and hug Maria 😆
This is why I actually think Ariana Debose did a better job than Rita Moreno. This scene where she's biting her lips, quietly sobbing, so enraged, conflicted and frustrated but knowing Maria loves Tony as deeply as she loved Bernardo. You feel every emotion just from her face. She wants to slap and hug Maria in equal parts
L'm
Back in 1960 I memorized all the songs from the movie. Not many musicals now have singable songs.
"West Side Story " will eventually become a major classic like the original did. Steven Spielberg is a top notch director and visionary. All four actors came across brilliant and had great chemistry.
The way Ariana sobs “He murdered mine” has always made me die inside. It’s so perfect.
@Kyra Turlington i think they ment the Actress name
Ariana DeBose and Rachel Zegler are seriously Oscar-worthy!
Ariana only won the Oscar. Rachel didn’t though
@the final film bro you need to refresh your stash of bons mots, that one's laughably stale
@Marcel Audubon Nice Copium
@Becky C I know!
Pity Rachel wasn’t recognised, she at least deserved a nod!
1:38 “Oh no, Anita, no! YOU should know BETTER” gives me CHILLS every time 😭
YESSS
I love West Side Story, but there’s always a part of me screaming internally “y’all just met LAST NIGHT!”
Literally I could not stop thinking that when I saw this. Like damn, this is Frozen eat your heart out
@Holly seconding this. the point is that maria and tony are victims of a pointless hatred. how are you going to fault two teenagers who just wanted to like each other in peace.
This is there in the original Romeo and Juliet too. Juliet even has her doubts but Romeo is all gas no brakes. I guess they left that out in West side story, which makes the enchantment scene at the dance all the more important. That scene is one of the weaknesses of the recent rendition, although I loved it overall.
Think what you will about Maria and Tony's relationship, but the point was never to show off romance. The point was to show how hatred can kill innocence and goodness even in children. Maria and Tony were KIDS. They met at a dance and decided they liked each other but somehow that innocent relationship snowballed into a fucking gang war. Maria insisting that she stay with Tony is the last vestiges of her childhood innocence FIGHTING to stay alive despite the violence going on around her.
The story isn't about "two dumb teenagers thinking they're in love." It's about TWO KIDS TRYING TO BE KIDS AND BEING UNFAIRLY PUNISHED FOR IT.
Yep me too! ✋ lmao
I can't be the only one who can see Rachel Zegler playing Christine Daae in Phantom of the Opera. She has the voice for it.
@ana k/ YES! 100%
Her tone is so pure and clear as a bell. She is doing so many great things naturally. I really qant to hear more from her. I look forward to seeing her in Snow White. I really hope they give her some music that allows her to really show off her lovely voice
@Johanna Stromberg god if she sounds amazing now i can’t imagine how good she’ll be later w more training! i just know that i *have* to see her in more musicals, her voice is just incredible to me
@ana k/ yes! She is a high soprano. Ive ovbiously never worked with her. But i know the music from WSS and POTO very well, and PHOTO is a lot higher, and more vocally demanding. The character of Cristine is a classically trained opera singer, and Rachel has openly admitted to having no formal training. So to do the role convincingly and in a healthy way night after night, she would definately need more training I think. That's not at all me trying to diss Rachel, I am just trying to be honest. She has a very lovely voice, great natural clear tone and nice placement. Lots of natural tallent. Just to do such a role justice, she would benefit from more training.
@Johanna Stromberg i’m not a musical genius but her voice can go pretty high!
She would be so good as Christine.
Ariana DeBose and Rachel Zegler were amazing in this scene. I can't believe this was Zegler's first film! DeBose was fantastic with portraying Anita's grief. Completely made the scene for me.
ARIANA DEBOSE IS NOW AN OSCAR NOMINEE 🥺💛
NOW AN OSCAR WINNER
She just won
She'll be an Oscar winner in two weeks
@boynamedalexxx agree with you
@David Güiza listen, I love Dunst, and have obviously been a fan of hers longer than Ariana DeBose (since she’s relatively new), but it’s DeBose’s to lose at this point.
Also, it would make sense-Anita tends to be the part that walks away with the trophies-Chita Rivera, Rita Moreno, Karen Olivo. I’d be extremely surprised if DeBose doesn’t win, which she deserves to.
I haven't seen this yet but need too. Maria's voice when she sang 'and all of my life" just wow. Amazing
I finally got to watch it on Sunday on Disney Plus
If you haven’t already heard it, listen to Trisha Yearwood’s version on “The Songs From West Side Story” album from the 90’s. She is equally impressive & sends chills with her own “And all of my life” highlight of her rendition.
You should I watched it was so amazing!
Excellent voices and no dubbing like the original version
I can't wait to hear, "Oscar Winner Ariana Debose" 😍 She completely deserves it.
Waited 2 years for this and it was worth it! Love that theres more acting and rawness in this rendition. One of my favorite scenes.
@Omer Giguere As someone who's been a fan of the 1961 movie since i was 15, this new version didn't deserve to be ignored. But then again, i waited until the variant died down until i had the chance to watch it.
I waited until 2018 when Rita Moreno was announced to do the project
Although "West Side Story" didn't turn out a major blockbuster, there are reasons such as covid19, appeals to an older crowd (baby boomers). But most of all Steven Spielberg took a chance and I applaud him for that. For me WSS will remain my favorite of all movie musicals.
I ALWAYS get emotional after listen this song and this remake made me cry. I love they added the little bit at the end, replacing the original lines from the script, with something hard for Anita (Ariana DeBose) to overcome and Maria (Rachel Zegler) asking if she can; giving this genuine bond grief and sorrow, and in the midst, acceptance.
Please watch West Side Story 2021!
@G D The little talk at the end
What did they add?
thank god they used the original stage musical version rather than the cut-down version of the earlier film. The stage version is so much more powerful.
@The FirstBourne I've never seen it on stage before either
I never heard it this way before until now
@Juliana D'Amico sadly, I know this musical, both movie version and original stage version, like the back of my hand... and I've NEVER had the opportunity to see it live on stage.
One day, I hope.
MRE----- my mother took my brother to see the original play -----the musical in Detroit ..but she wouldn't take me ,which was maddening..... because I was a pre-teen then, I guess.
Thanks for the clarification. Now I see, and hear!
My jaw was on the floor after seeing this. These two are special...
ARIANA DEBOSE HOLY SHIT. ATE THIS MOVIE UP
Manifesting she wins Best Supporting Actress❗️
She's up there with Rita imo
When Rachel sings “all of my life” wow wow wow you have to repeat a couple of times because the vocal is so stunning
Not only amazing performances and orchestrations, the filmmaking elements are just perfect 🥰
I was totally amazed on everything that was included in this version. Such as Rita Moreno singing "Somewhere", Maria carrying a suitcase as she is running towards Tony's demise. Anita at the morgue. "Offercer Krupke" sung in the police station. So many more inclusions. A Cinematic masterpiece. Tony Kushners brilliant screenplay.
When Ariana says “ he will never be safe here. “ for some reason it gives me goosebumps everytime!
If they had release actual clips where people can see what they're getting like what they did with the greatest showman, more people would've watched this.
@Orpheus Where are You from?
@Filo do you have disney+?
Right, I’ve been looking for clips after watching it and I can’t find anything :( I want to see the Anita scene with the jets again so I can process it. They made it so much more horrible
@EmEss Gee yeah sure man thank you. Buying/renting the film isn't even available in my country lol. I feel awful 💀
@Orpheus oh dang, well there isn’t an official clip of this yet but there’s someone who posted it with a “spanish sub” that’s basically the scene on youtube. I could link it if you want?
1:37 la explosión de María en esta parte es muy imponente, el impacto que causa es exquisitamente perfecto, se puede sentir a través de la pantalla la guerra que lucha pero también el amor que siente.
Creo que estoy enamorado ❤️
This absolutely blew me away!! I’ve never heard a song performed with such raw emotion like this! These two were spectacular!
The best version of this song I have heard. One of the highlights of the film!
Very moving. I must admit that this version stirred my soul more. They do more operetta overlaps. The slap by Anita really set the tone.
Rita's Anita was a hard act to follow. But this one satisfactorily followed it.
The fact that this was LIVE!!!!!! Their vocals were EVERYTHING. This number made me cry😭
The singing here is very strong. This is a good song. I can feel the emotions here.
@Zari Belle I'm glad that they did.
And they recorded this song live! Unbelievable!!
Both of them deserve Oscar nominations for sure!
Man, moved to tears. Love is indeed a knife that cuts in every way possible and still has the power of healing and redemption. God smiled on this one.
Poor Anita. Having to go through a traumatizing experience more than once…no wonder why she is on the verge of exploding throughout the song. But Maria too, you have to feel bad for her. She is now being forced to grow up fast and is trying to tell her best friend that everything was a mistake.
@Sunshine yeah but he didnt mean to kill him is another fact. A rumble is just suppost to be a fight and riff was the one who started the rumble talk in the first place.
@idaf in that moment, yes, I'll agree with you. Still, he and Riff were the two planning the rumble from the start, while Tony was consistently trying to stop it from happening.
@CiCi Houston Sudholt beranrdo's kill was accidental and i will stand by that.
Yes to all of this... except Bernardo was also a killer that night. He was also the first to kill, whereas Tony was avenging his friend's death. Personally, I'm against all of that violence, but you can't write off one character for violence over an equally guilty opponent.
Tony killed her brother regardless of accidental, she was insane for still following behind him.
ANITA
A boy like that who'd kill your brother,
Forget that boy and find another,
One of your own kind.
Stick to your own kind!
A boy like that will give you sorrow.
You'll meet another boy tomorrow,
One of your own kind.
Stick to your own kind!
A boy who kills cannot love,
A boy who kills has no heart.
And he's the boy who gets your love
And gets your heart!
Very smart, Maria, very smart!
A boy like that wants one thing only,
And when he's done, he'll leave you lonely.
He'll murder your love; he murdered mine.
Just wait and see,
Just wait, Maria,
Just wait and see!
MARIA
Oh, no, Anita, no,
Anita, no!
It isn't true, not for me,
It's true for you, not for me.
I hear your words,
And in my head
I know they're smart,
But my heart, Anita,
But my heart
Knows they're wrong
And my heart
Is too strong,
For I belong
To him alone, to him alone.
One thing I know:
I am his,
I don't care what he is.
I don't know why it's so,
I don't want to know!
Oh no, Anita, no, you should know better!
You were in love, or so you said.
You should know better . . .
I have a love, and it's all that I have.
Right or wrong, what else can I do?
I love him, I'm his,
And everything he is
I am, too.
I have a love, and it's all that I need,
Right or wrong, and he needs me, too.
I love him, we're one.
There's nothing to be done,
Not a thing I can do
But hold him, hold him forever,
Be with him now, tomorrow
And all of my life!
BOTH
When love comes so strong,
There is no right or wrong,
Your love is your life.
Thank you for the lyrics!
The way their voices blend with each other made me cry while watching the movie the first and second time! 🥺🥺😭🥰
I absolutely love the line “ When love comes so strong, there is not right or wrong”.
Saw this movie 3 days and cannot get this scene out of my head. Brilliant
Everyone sings with such emotion - it’s not only gorgeous but so powerful
Rewatching this I barely understood that when Maria is singing about her love, the camera focuses on Anita weeping and let’s Maria’s voice be the vehicle through which we process Anita’s grief. Very powerful.
0:38 the way she says “very smart” gives me chills
The part we’re Anita said “ONE OF YOUR OWN KIND STICK TO YOUR OWN KIND! Was so powerful
So very well done! Love it absolutely love it!
This scene was actually my fave part!! They done amazingly
Might be my favorite rendition of this song ever.
Una canción con mucha fuerza. ✨
This song really resonates with me at the moment. My boyfriend hasn't been stabbed to death or committed murder, but he's moving to Mexico and I sure am sad. xx
Best song in the show
@Kristian M my comment was two weeks ago, I get it lol
@idaf film and movie are synonyms...
@Jay Bonn yh why not but I’m saying it’s a movie.
@idaf porque no los dos?
Film?
I absolutely loved this number, it was so amazing, I have to say I prefer it over the original!! One thing that I always noticed about it from the original is Anita is basically, without knowing, saying Bernardo didn't love her because he killed Riff.
Rachel's vocals😭❤
Outstanding rendition✨!
He’ll murder your love he murderd mine. SO GOOD
This scene and entire movie is an emotional rollercoaster.
Chorando q agora a rachel vai ficar super famosa por todo esse talento e eu acompanho desde os vídeos no youtube no banheiro dela aaaaa
They were crying while singing live, that’s very impressive. When you’re crying, your throat is paralysed.
This scene on the big screen had me
In tears!!!
I just want to thank Leonard Bernstein and Gustavo Dudamel for the moving score on this piece!!
I love that they kept all the music and every scene the same 😍😊
Ik heb nu deze schitterende versie al twee keer gezien. Dit fragment is echt subliem. Heftig gespeeld en gezongen!
Both are golden globe winners!
I’m sure, the composer of Tangled was inspired by “A Boy Like That” for the “Mother Knows Best” reprise.
1:47 Maria’s beautiful solo part 💗
I love this a lot, the performances sound GREAT my only critique is that in my opinion the beginning with Anita is done just the tiniest bit too fast
This is my least favorite song in the show, yet Ariana and Rachel had THE BEST rendition, especially with the tears at the end.
Ariana DeBose proves herself to be a true triple threat in this movie. But Rachael has improved vocally since she performed as Maria in her high school production. I saw her sing this song here on RU-clip.
This scene is really emotional, and I love how Anita's feelings are portrayed in this song. But i dislike the Maria's character pretty badly. Like, i get it you love Tony, but pleaaaase, he killed your brother, and the fact that they yk sleep together the same night after her brother's been killed is just too much for me 👀.
@Rings Of Blayze The lyrics in “I have a love” kinda explain why she did. Besides, Tony was ready face to consequences, but Maria couldn’t lose both him & her brother
@Joe Whitehead bro it's gangs fighting!! Why would they shake hands? Please stop, Maria is disgusting for choosing a man she only met yesterday over her flesh and blood brother.
@Rings Of Blayze Bernardo wasn’t exactly innocent. If he loved his sister, he woulda shook hands with Tony instead of fighting him
@Joe Whitehead it was a fight and Tony fought back too lol like stop acting like the white boy is innocent. Tony killed her brother and she knew it and still made love with him. Chile.....that's worse than snitching.
@Rings Of Blayze Tony was offering to make peace Bernardo, but he just kept hitting him
Dubose is a shoe-in on Oscar night. The other nominees should just stay home..Fantastic performance!
I heard they recorded this one live ... true??
Yup
yes
1:37 I love how Ariana doesn't sing this and instead just spits it out
This is the type of song that make anyone ugly cry. 😢 😭
Wow Rachel Zielger is good
I'm even more excited to see her take on Snow White
Astounding!!
Amazing!
Imagine being a latina, and then still thinking of getting with a boy who just murdered your family??? Idk about how things go down in Puerto rico or the boricua part of new york, but in my country that's a enormous NO
1:31 THIS PART
4:08 Anyone expect to hear them sing “Your love is…” three times like Lin and Raul did?
Ima wait till I can rent this but Im excited this slaps
The screams in the theater when she walked in and he was still there
A boy like that who'd kill your brother,
Forget that boy and find another,
One of your own kind.
Stick to your own kind!
A boy like that will give you sorrow.
You'll meet another boy tomorrow,

I swear the violin part for “I love him” was used in like the death scene for another movie but I can’t pin point it
Award winner for sure
I wish the original movie’s had the same anger as this Anita’s version. (They should have used Rita’s voice and not the dub honestly 😔)
@Joe Whitehead I looked around and found that the song was apparently out of Rita’s voice range? The song was too low for her. Rita understood that it had to be dubbed, but she just wished the emotion in the dub matched the way she acted the scene.
@Joe Whitehead That's one thing that still upsets me to this day
Yeah, why wasn’t Rita’s own voice used in that song?
Both actresses should have Oscar noms. This was better than the original. Rachel was better than Natalie.
I agree, but Natalie and Rita were also held back by the movie standards of the time. If they had been given the freedom to go there dramatically, it would've been interesting to see what they could do. Also, without their own singing voices in this scene, it's doubly hard to give a cohesive dramatic performance.
This year’s best lead actress race was pretty tight
Thing is Bernardo killed Riff before he died. If he lived and Anita found out, how would she rationalize it? Would she even rationalize it at all? She says Tony cannot feel love or compassion since he's a killer. How would she go about saying the same thing about her own lover? Would she even say the same thing? Just a hypothetical.
We may never know
That's why Maria says "you should know better". She's reminding Anita of the hypocrisy in that statement
Imagine coming home from seeing your dead boyfriend in the morgue and finding his killer in your best friend's bed at her consent.
I feel so bad for Anita.
@Joe Whitehead That too.
& then getting assaulted as well
I find it in bad taste Maria went on about how Anita knew love or so she said. I get Maria is upset but how insulting that must be to Anita. Hearing that and learning that Maria wanted to be with the man who killed her love. And yet, Anita still tried to help them until the jets attempted assault. Seriously, Anita deserved far better than she got
There are parts where i can't tell shouting and singing apart
Glee's version is way better.
I could see Rachel Zegler as Christine daae. Who agrees?
In Phantom of the Opera?
Uuuugh I have such a love-hate relationship with this song🤣 It’s SO GOOD but it has a TERRIBLE message!!
I never understood Maria for this bruh 😂😂😂 I'm sorry lmfao
¡Por favor, Maria, por favor!
Is the for me 😍
But what I do like about this song though. In the original it seemed like Maria was preaching to Anita. But in this version Maria saying she already to far gone to back now.
VERY SMART, MARIA, VERY SMART!!
Okay, they took this so ridiculously fast. Hard to hear and digest all of the words. Listen to the original which itself was taken at a decently fast clip, but very well paced and perfectly fitting the drama. This is a version on speed, comparatively. At least, the second half with Anita's contemplative section, they slowed it down completely.
You think if Bernardo lived-say he recovered from Tony’s stabbing-HE’d the one singing “A Boy Like That” instead of Anita?
I think so
Bernardo being killed is a crucial part of the story
Two very talented ladies, but I loathed the remake (despite their efforts).
“A boy who kills cannot love,” Anita, hun, your man killed first🤣🤣 See Maria should have pointed out Anita’s hypocrisy instead of giving that BS toxic “love” message🤦🏻♀️ And Anita BOUGHT IT?? Y’all MET LAST NIGHT!!
She wouldn’t have wanted to hear that
1:57 I have a love
1:36 Saving for myself
I´m honest.... I like some songs and their implementation in this new version. However, there are some that I do not like pretty much because the original spirit is destroyed (America). But this version..... It is sooooooo good. I truly love it. I would even recommend watching the movie just because of this scene.
I actually liked America and how Ariana sounded and the parts where “lots of doors slamming in our face” were sang by the Puerto Rican community in the streets protesting. Also that it’s set in the streets of New York instead of the roof which even tho America being set in the roof is iconic, America being set in the streets of New York brings a sense of realism and what actually was going on in 1957 Manhattan. But also just the visuals, the bright colors and choreography made it amazing, that’s just me though as a person who’s seen the movie😅
To him alone one thing I know one thing I know
Oh my godddd
this has drugs in it
I get Anita is grieving in this song, but the double standarts she has for Tony and Bernado are so annoying. 😭
