How Microwaving Grapes Makes Plasma

  • A bisected grape in the microwave makes plasma. But how does it work? A grape is the right size and refractive index to trap microwaves inside it. When you place two (or two halves) close together the fields interact with each other creating a maximum of electromagnetic energy where they touch. This creates heating, sparks, and plasma, which is further fed with energy directly by the microwaves.
Huge thanks to Hamza Khattak, Prof. Pablo Bianucci and Prof. Aaron Slepkov (unavailable for the call) for chatting to me and helping me understand the physics of this cool phenomenon.

Bro, light bulbs been around a long time. I mean it depends on the type of bulb we are talking about, and grapes have a much lower melting point than tungsten. and the method of energy applied. none the less still lightbulb physics. You could fine tune your microwave technically, and with different material than grape... to be a lightbulb. Very inefficient and potentially hazardous though unless you rigged it properly with those hazards in mind for it's design. You'd just turn the microwave on. It would be very bright though normally but there is a special radiation layer in the microwave window to protect you, which also affects light

Everyone knows microwave ovens heat from the inside out. That's why you have a standing time because they continue to cook from the inside out after the microwave has stopped. GOOD GRIEF!!

  • Vendion patt Estabillo

What will happen if you put them together inside the oven but you need to let the oven open, i know that an oven will not work of it is open, but would there be any possible way to have a working oven with its covers open?

can you do another experiment that may be even more intresting? ask someone that works with glass if they can make two sphere like grapes but the outside is see trough and the inside is reflective.like those windows were you can see from one way to another but from the other way you see your reflection.that but with the reflective on the inside. than microwave that.
