    If you lose weight - you've lost it. Nobody knows where it goes, or it wouldn't be lost. So, it's actually stoicheometry, not weight loss.

    No no no. You cannot get ketoacidosis if you are not diabetic. The ketogenic diet is the only way to sustainably lose weight. But you need to do it the RIGHT way. Look into it and do it.

    I watched this years ago, and all the comments were the same. The new was ‘this guy has walnuts in his pocket’ but one that still no one didn’t really pick up on was his fossil fuel comment. The critters that are broken down into fossil fuels - yet when we burn them it destroys the planet and it’ll take $93t to fix it, without proof it will help at all OR to keep the next 100yrs to 3 degrees increase Max. Another reason when we learned about dinosaurs and volcanoes, nature has ran its course for 100s of thousands of years and we are gonna destroy it with burning wilted critters in less than 200yrs.

    I did it, got sick of being 16st / 101kgs (I'm 6ft) and I saw an article about top 10 reasons you can't lose weight, and every point (minus some rare diseases) basically said "your consuming more than you use", so it was clear what I needed to do, the science has never changed. But the problem is I'm lazy, so I figured I had more motivation to eat less then I did to exercise, so I got a free calorie app (myfitnesspal in this case), and started watching what I eat, coupled with 15mins of HIT twice a week. (again from a free app, 7min trainer) I lost 3st / 19kgs in 6 months, down to 13/ 82kgs and it didn't feel like an effort. Also I learnt alot about my diet in the process and I've maintained that weight (well I settled at 85kgs ) for 2 years.

    Molar mass is not the mass of one molecule. It's the mass of 6.022*10^23 molecules of that given atom/element/compound! The units of this is grams/mole. A mole is 6.022*10^23 individual atoms. Also, an atomic mass unit (amu) is the mass of a proton or neutron. This is the atomic number (1 for H, 3 for C, etc.). 0-0

    this talk keeps rolling in my head.
    so when we exercise.. if we would add more oxygen into the air, would this speed the reaction up? therefor making weight loss faster.
    on a side note... would exercise at a higher altitude slow weight loss?

      First question: It wouldn't. Your blood oxygen saturation (the oxygen that actually gets used) would stay relatively same.
      Second question: No, on the contrary simply being in a higher altitude make changes to your metabolism that increases your basal metabolic rate, causing you to expend more energy even if you're resting.
      The amount of energy expended in exercise would be roughly the same, however you would feel that you exercised much harder.

      Weight loss is pure mathematics. Not losing weight? Reduce calories by 200. Still not? Reduce calories by 200 again. Regardless of what you think you're eating. If you think you're eating 500 kcal and not losing, your count is way off. Anyone who has lost weight has been in a mathematical calorie deficit... whether they know it or not.

    The soft drink sugar content is either bullcrap or it's a drink he cooked up him self to use as a hyperbole. Coca Cola contains 10.6 g sugar per 100ml, that is 10,6% wight, SO for a 50cl bottle you would get 53g of sugar. 17 teaspoons is elective to 85g. so he claims there is 38% more sugar in that bottle then there is then in a Cola beverage which is considered high in sugar content .
    So like i said, either bullcrap or a drink he cooked up him self as a hyperbole

    about faq #2: I've always thought that the CO2 just goes in a cycle, from plants, to us, to plants. Great, makes sense. But why are we constantly told that us eating meat is bad for the climate. The animals are doing to same thing we are. Eating plants.
    So whats the missing step? Where does my logic fail me?

    He wasn't trying to explain the psychology of hunger, hormonal differences, or differences in metabolisms, he was hurriedly trying to illustrate his point of calories in < calories out. If you fast one day a week, that lowers your caloric intake for the week. If you maintain your present eating habits the other six days, your still requiring your body to come up with stored nutrients for that day. Your metabolism won't react quickly enough to make adjustments. I'm not saying it's easy, but being hungry one day is better than being hungry all the time.

      People should not have problems being hungry all the time. Almost all living things exist that way. I am basically constantly hungry to some extent, 24/7, that's the only way to maintain a healthy weight. Hunger is not calibrated at all to get you into eating a reasonable amount of calories. If you always eat when you are hungry living in a civilization, you'll eat many multiple times the food you need.

    A significant amount of the energy in our food comes from fossil fuels, by way of fertilizers, e.g. anhydrous ammonia in corn production. The earth is operating "beyond its bio-capacity" which means that we don't have the technology to feed the human population on solar energy alone. Nobody currently eats foods produced with wind/nuclear energy, but if we're not going to reduce the population, we might have to figure out how.

      They reduce or speed up your metabolism. Unless you have a diagnosable imbalance, the effects are pretty negligible.

    High protein diet is what he means by ketogenesis. your body naturally enters ketogenesis after 12 hours post feeding. He was saying low protein diets, he meant low carb diets. Very informative besides that one small mistake!

    About the climate change and the global balance of solar energy that people and animals are digesting, we should consider this. Old plants and animals have absorbed "old solar energy". They died and they became ground sooner or later. Nowadays this "old buried energy" was absorbed by more and more plants and animals (which eat those plants), due to the increasing agriculture, due to the ever increasing population and food consumption. So it is quite true, as many scientists (more expert than me) always point out, that the ever increasing population (eating and digesting) and animals' digestion gases are increasing more and more the global warming.     Sunlight = food is the same reason cows do NOT "produce" atmospheric carbon. If the grass they ate grows back for next year's herd, carbon is actually sequestered.

    While this video is a bit of an entertaining “magic show” your body doesn’t treat all macro-nutrients the same. Just “eating less and moving more” is an overly simplistic approach to “losing weight.” Try reading “The Zone” by Barry Sears.

    Thanks for the info. You should really collaborate with Drs. Jason Fung, MD (author of "The Obesity Code") and Ken D. Berry, MD (author of "Lies My Doctor Told Me"). They have great analysis on keto if you are interested in the many biochemical effects that they've dug into pertaining to weight loss and more with what they teach as being an overall low-carb, and moderate protein diet... 👍👨‍⚕️😎

    This might be one the worse TED talks I have ever seen. He mixed low carb with low protein diets, struggled all the way. He was either nervous or poorly prepared.

    Near the end he mentioned ketosis and said low carbs. But then he said twice after that "low protein diet". I am pretty sure he meant to say "low carbohydrate diet". I don't think there is such a thing as a low protein diet. But, I don't want to take away from his genius presentation of how simple losing weight really is. It really is as simple as 'eat less, move more'. 'Healthy' requires more attention to diet than just eat less, but eat less is the primary, and probably most important first step. Keep in mind that he, and I, are not saying easy, just simple.
    In order to lose weight, you need to consume fewer calories than you burn in a day. How many total calories you burn in a day is unique to every person, and finding that point can be difficult, but using the average '2000 calorie diet' is close enough for this. 2500 less calories per week roughly translates into 1 lb of weight loss. That means daily, assuming you are currently consuming exactly the '2000 calories', you would need to decrease that by 350 calories (rounded). one 12 oz soft drink and a candy bar is about 350 calories. Eliminating that will allow you to lose 1 lb per week. a 180 lb man running an 11.5 minute mile (which is basically a brisk jog) for 30 minutes (which would equal just shy of 3 miles a day) burns roughly 350 calories. You can see how diet is way more easy to affect your overall calorie intake than exercise if you only did one or the other. But, combining the 2 increases the benefits exponentially considering that not only are you losing weight, but you are getting fit at the same time.
    Honestly, save your money. Don't buy any 'lose weight now' product, whether it comes in the form of what and how you consume calories, or in the form of how and what you exercise. If you want to spend money on equipment or exercise programs, do it for the enjoyment of the exercise, not because you think it will be any more effective than any other exercise program. There are plenty of free videos of exercises that use only your own body weight that will allow you to lose weight and become more healthy.
    The whole, entire weight loss industry is, by and large, a huge scam.
    Sorry, I'll step off my soapbox now. It just burns me that the entire industry has made it sound like you CAN'T lose weight unless you buy some product, and it really just makes it guaranteed that very few will actually lose weight.

    Eat less, move more and I would add...cut out 2 things (Sugar, and Grains) they are not healthy as we've been told and they promote Dis-Ease within our bodies. Conceptually easy, hard to practice but has changed my life tremendously.

      +Ebenezer Advertisements and Corporations that put out misinformation about products saying they are nutritional and healthy when they know (as corporate memos now prove as with tobacco and sugar industries.) that the added ingredients like sugar is only in the products to create an addiction. Getting off sugar as well as grains is one of the most healthy choices people can make. As with all opinions we can agree to disagree.

    I thought the theory was nice to listen to. However, eat less and move more is far from being a new idea, and has shown over and over to be a failure. One needs not to eat less, but to eat healthier.

    This is what I have been saying for years. People go through all these weight loss fads and situations, when really all you have to do is eat less and move more. Also to add to it, I like to think of weight loss like a bank. Calories are the money. If you can't pay it back later through exercise, don't spend it through eating.

    Lavoisier/Lomonosov law of conservation of mass is for closed systems, for open systems it has to be adjusted with energy entering and exiting the system. The conclusion is correct but the demonstration very simplistic as human body is much more complex. Still, it is so nice to see how school chemistry can be fun and simple to explain.
