Change Your Mindset and Achieve Anything | Colin O'Brady | TEDxPortland

  • Published on Jul 11, 2017
  • In this epic Talk, Colin O'Brady, explains his journey back from a tragic burn accident only to ascend to the 7 tallest mountains and two poles on earth - in world record time.

His idea is centered around mindfulness and how one can achieve anything no matter the circumstances.

With special thanks to the UNIVERSITY OF OREGON for presenting partnership, a world class stage design provided by HENRY V, an incredible legacy bound book provided by PREMIER and to the creative digital craft provided by ENJOY THE WEATHER. All of our Partners and event history can be found

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Colin, a native of Portland, is a testament to mindfulness, setting audacious goals and achieving them despite overwhelming odds. Last year, Colin set two world records: He became the fastest person ever to complete both the Seven Summits (climbing the highest peak on every continent) and the Explorers Grand Slam (the Seven Summits + skiing to the last degree of the North and South Poles). He completed the challenges in 131 and 139 days, respectively. His nonprofit, Beyond 7/2, strives to inspire kids to lead active, healthy lives and pursue their biggest dreams.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

The guy's story is, indeed, inspiring but...
We should be teaching folks to be realistic and rational. If more people push the extremes, there are going to be a lot more fatalities.
Yes, we need to work out and be active but everyone can't be a superstar.

While it's possible for many people to achieve much more we have to remind ourselves that we are the lucky ones who have the choices - many of the 7.5 Billion on this planet do not.

This is the first time ever I'm commenting on a you tube video. It's in a moment when I felt stagnated, that I watched this ted talk. I feel filled with motivation and enthusiasm upto the brink. Our mind is our biggest obstacle, the first step is the hardest step. If you can do that,..wait, there's one more thing...after taking your first step you should never stop walking, you should never quit. If you can do this, you can Conquer Everything and anything you like. Loved this talk! I'm gonna take my first step. Thanks.

A prime example of the painful vulgarity of American culture.

      Sune Asmussen 2 months ago

@Cristian Espinoza Try to interpret it as an analytical, cultural critique rather than hate. Let me know if you succeed.

    • Cristian Espinoza
      Cristian Espinoza 2 months ago

@Sune Asmussen I can see your point but why so dramatic about it, how does that bother you? What are you doing that is the opposite of American vulgarity? Are you humble and loving and bringing that to others or just hateful? And I understand what you mean, his speech didn't motivate me, it just seem like a bit of bragging and I think it's a waste of time doing all those things and how he must have enough wealth to do it. Apart from that, why so hateful?

    • Sune Asmussen
Sune Asmussen 2 months ago +1

@Cristian Espinoza If you can't see it, nothing I say will enable you to. But, proposing to your fiance on a mountain top, needing a world record, dramatizing climbing Mount Everest even though it is so much nothing special that climbers are queuing at the summit. All he says is trivial; nothing new, nothing profound.

Why is the human mind such an obstacle? There is something natural within us preventing success. This guy is the exception, not the rule. The world has 8 billion people and 99.99999% will achieve nothing with their lives except existing to die.

I wanted to go back to school to finish Uni in my late 20s but thought I was too old. Then in my 30s I wanted to again but thought I was now too old and should have gone back in my 20s. I went back when I was 40 and finished it then (when I realized I wasn't too old and never would be). I was like you, no passion but I have realized you need to start somewhere and give it your all, then the passion will sneak up on you.

Having so many dreams, not even having achieved one of them. I want to travel the world, start my own business, finish college. I'm still stuck. My mind is preventing me from moving forward. I'm currently behind on my college work, reaching a point where I almost have a burnout. Scared of failing and going back to point zero. I wish I could just easilly turn of my doubts and reach my dreams.
