  • In this epic Talk, Colin O'Brady, explains his journey back from a tragic burn accident only to ascend to the 7 tallest mountains and two poles on earth - in world record time.

His idea is centered around mindfulness and how one can achieve anything no matter the circumstances.

With special thanks to the UNIVERSITY OF OREGON for presenting partnership, a world class stage design provided by HENRY V, an incredible legacy bound book provided by PREMIER and to the creative digital craft provided by ENJOY THE WEATHER. All of our Partners and event history can be found TEDxPortland.com

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Colin, a native of Portland, is a testament to mindfulness, setting audacious goals and achieving them despite overwhelming odds. Last year, Colin set two world records: He became the fastest person ever to complete both the Seven Summits (climbing the highest peak on every continent) and the Explorers Grand Slam (the Seven Summits + skiing to the last degree of the North and South Poles). He completed the challenges in 131 and 139 days, respectively. His nonprofit, Beyond 7/2, strives to inspire kids to lead active, healthy lives and pursue their biggest dreams.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Very nice. I don't aspire to climb high mountains, but this talk reinforces to me not to give up on my goal--being in my 50's, with shoulder joint issues, and everybody tells me to give up on my goal of being able to do a pull up (unassisted). But the bottom line is I won't be satisfied until I do. I think I'll just keep working on those baby steps and see what happens. 8-)

A crippled person can reach heavens, but a person with depression can´t reach anything.

  • Dihelson Mendonca
Dihelson Mendonca 21 день назад +1

Every man can do all that and more. There´s only one condition a person can´t do even the simpliest thing in life: If he or she got depression. Depression is the difference between being a Stephen Hawking on a chair, which could produce wonderful things to the world, or being a completely healthy person and despite all efforts, can´t produce the smallest of things ! If this man had depression, he could not have made anything !

WTF people, if everybody took one stone from ME it would already shorter so maybe we will stop to be such an egoistic asses and not take from such unique places? geez. there is actually a law that forbids it. so...uncool and the whole story is shieeet to me now.

    Beautiful talk loved it!
Story Telling at its best, no doubt, great story, UNTIL "The Put On Your Boots Again To Achieve A Second Record Was A Surprise That He Did Not Know About" -
THAT second goal was pre-planned, why make it look like it was not planned? Why not mention the sponsorship from Nike wasn't it? The tough training days? and how to manage a life (Job maybe? Finances to pay for trainers and special training to prepare? The cost of that goal?)
WHY TED talkers leave MOST OF THE TIME the financial aspects, sponsorships and the real process of how things happen? - Many watch this thinking that he took a step to a chair - Joged daily and BAM!! he was ready to compete. The real TALK is in sharing what where the life scenarios to make things happen, and Ted Talkers leave it out and tell a tale from tragedy to magic....oh well, I enjoyed anyway.

Just sharing the lines he said..may be useful for others,
"Achievement is not for the select few, its simply for those who never quit, its for those who set goals, its for those who put the most steps in front of the others, its for those who can overcome the greatest obstacle of all, their

mind. So set a goal, take the first steps & when your steps get you there, push further and when you feel like giving up, put your boots back on, let go of fear & watch as your rocks stack up to the summit of your own Mt. Everest. - Colin O'Brady"

  • muthukumaranl

Its important to note that two things here,
    1. He does not attempt to equate achievement to any one thing or what he did. He is just using his example. It also does not mean achievement is something that nobody has ever done before or something cool that needs to be shown to others in a social media feed to impress. On the contrary, Its personal, its definition is what one defines for oneself which can include the ones mentioned earlier aswell.
    2. Taking the approach he outlines, even if it means failing in achieving the goal in the end for various reasons not in one's control, does not make it wrong or that the process may not be beneficial or profoundly positive. Sometimes the journey may end up being as satisfying or more satisfying than the destination itself in the end.

nope, we DO NOT "have full control" ... I basically hate motivational talks (although I was actually impressed by some of them): too many of them are made by con artists for a fee or by dudes (like in this case) who were LUCKY enough to achieve something major (while beating the odds, which always tends to bring tears in grandmas' eyes) and maybe are naive enough to believe that anybody (or most of the sheeple) can be **that** LUCKY. Keyword: LUCKY (and now think of how many Jackpot winners in the Lottery you personally know ..)

This is so flipping TRUE, anyone can do this. Get your mind right and you can do anything like make $100k a month over and over again. People, success is 80% mind, 20% physical. Forget the 9 to 5, this what society tells you have to do but you don’t.Stop listening to this messed up world. Quit serving this f’d up society, the government controls the education system, college is a scam, health like flu shots, and so much more. Take control today, let me give you some tips

I just don't get it how people have even disliked this video.
This story just makes me realise... i mean whenever i used to think of people who have achieved great things i used to just feel like are they even human.
It is so difficult to believe these stories.
When i actually closed my eyes for a few seconds i could maybe a little bit imagine how it felt when the legs got burnt. And i was already scared in 2s.
Like he said u may read thousands of books but you cannot be fully prepared for when u actually face the situation.
