Change Your Mindset and Achieve Anything | Colin O'Brady | TEDxPortland

  • Опубликовано: 11 июл 2017
  • In this epic Talk, Colin O'Brady, explains his journey back from a tragic burn accident only to ascend to the 7 tallest mountains and two poles on earth - in world record time.

His idea is centered around mindfulness and how one can achieve anything no matter the circumstances.

With special thanks to the UNIVERSITY OF OREGON for presenting partnership, a world class stage design provided by HENRY V, an incredible legacy bound book provided by PREMIER and to the creative digital craft provided by ENJOY THE WEATHER. All of our Partners and event history can be found

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Colin, a native of Portland, is a testament to mindfulness, setting audacious goals and achieving them despite overwhelming odds. Last year, Colin set two world records: He became the fastest person ever to complete both the Seven Summits (climbing the highest peak on every continent) and the Explorers Grand Slam (the Seven Summits + skiing to the last degree of the North and South Poles). He completed the challenges in 131 and 139 days, respectively. His nonprofit, Beyond 7/2, strives to inspire kids to lead active, healthy lives and pursue their biggest dreams.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

It is really nice seeing the younger generations achieving goals and setting new ones. I have the attitude of "Just Do it"!. Focusing my mind on doing those things other people only dream of doing. In short, you can do anything you put your mind to. Have a Great Life! is after all, the only one you have.

I just don't get it how people have even disliked this video.
This story just makes me realise... i mean whenever i used to think of people who have achieved great things i used to just feel like are they even human.
It is so difficult to believe these stories.
When i actually closed my eyes for a few seconds i could maybe a little bit imagine how it felt when the legs got burnt. And i was already scared in 2s.
Like he said u may read thousands of books but you cannot be fully prepared for when u actually face the situation.

Overcoming the tragedy of burning his legs was really inspiring. But the talk devolved into talking about setting selfish goals that only prove that he is the best for something that no one really cares about. I understand the allure of climbing mountains and going on adventures, but that is for your own fulfillment. Hope he uses his energy and resources next for the improvement of the lives of others.

Amazing speech! Truly empowering! Thank you for sharing :) Totally true - your mind can be the only thing separating the impossible from the possible. It happened to me soooo many times for something to actually be achievable but impossible in my head just because I couldn't see it happen. Once you believe and you see it happening, well, it actually does happen! :)

This was incredible and inspirational. Jenna's pep talk helped me in my own journey. She puts fear into perspective . She reminds us: 'There's No Reason You can't be One Of Them to Succeed Mt. Everest. I too have my own Mt.Everest to climb Jenna says: Go inside your body, and listen...face those fears...change your mindset and achieve the reason you started. '' I know, '' she says to Colin : you can do it. Then Colin says this: FOCUS.. one STEP at a time. His body wanted to give up. Our mind, our emotional soul wants to give up..OUR biggest obstacle of all. Colin become strengthen by : Words. He forgot his weakness, and a sudden surge of energy came upon his body. Enduring more HARD work...with time. SEEING his Goal with his own eyes...conquering his fears...from the TOP OF THE WORLD. I also learned Jenna could see such a clear view on not to lose your motivation when you think you can throw in the towel. Jenna inspired Colin not to take your/his eye off the goal or obstacles will set in. Jenna words from miles away was enthusiastic and passionate because she "BELIEVED." and she believed in Colin. She vigorously acted by setting up the next yet much HARDER goal Colin had to conquer.Throughout bigger storms which we all go through, brought Colin additional fatigue forcing him to earn each step of the untapped reservoir of his potential:waiting to be released to arrive at Summit Denal. He states :"We Don't Have To Stay " in the negative mindset when facing life obstacles. Colin asks: ''How Will You Respond..You Have A Choice. He reminds himself by carrying a rock with him daily to push forward: because Achievement is not for the select few. What do you carry in your pocket?
For me... Jesus is my Rock......... to achieve my most obstacle.... of all....OUR MIND.
Colin mentions when your steps... get you there.... push your chair further and when you feel the need to give up :
PUT YOUR BOOTS BACK ON and remember to, '' Walk With Your Rock" As Jenna stated from the beginning : Go inside your body and listen...put your fear into perspective and reach your own Mt. Everest / Mt Denali ...
Awesome story Thank you Jenna and Colin O'Brady

Is "positive thinking" really effective for people from all over the world? Or is it just a self indulgent tool for the white privileged part of the world? Fact: The Sherpa people call Mount Everest Chomolungma and respect it as the "Mother of the World" . Taking that rock from mount Everest, this man demonstrates no real respect for the cultural environment where his adventure was set. Sad. It is peculiar how he describes mount Everest simply as many small rocks put one on top of the other ,while it is revered as a very sacred place for the native people of that land. Very sad. Behind the curtain of positive thinking, i see a well dressed, white privileged, simplified, capitalistic approach to deeply rooted social inequalities. According to this type of narrative, should a person born in a third world slum blame his weak mind-set for not running a very successful startup? I think the answer lies somewhere else. If there is one very true obstacle to the achievement of ALL people's goals, that is the systematic accumulation of resources in the hands of very few, at the expense of the majority. Any opinions?
