Beat Menopause Belly Fat by Starving Your Fat Cells (Not Yourself)

  • You can beat menopausal belly fat. Watch as Dr. Becky shares the foods to eat and avoid to starve your fat cells (not yourself).

When you reach menopause your body wants more fat because fat is a source of estrogen.
You don’t want those extra pounds, so in this video I’ll show you how to keep belly fat under control by starving your fat cells, without starving yourself.
    Menopause changes two things:
    1. It change where fat is stored on your body (i.e. more gets deposited in your midsection and less in your lower body).
    2. It changes where estrogen is produced. The ovaries no longer make estrogen, but your fat cells do, so higher body fat% is not frowned upon by your post-menopausal body.
Cortisol is another hormone that is not automatically thought about with menopause, but it contributes to belly fat.
Think of cortisol as the stress hormone, physical or emotional stress, even a lack of sleep causes an increased release of cortisol.
Bottom Line: you have to work with your body during and after menopause to get it to do what you want.
The trick is to starve your fat cells without starving yourself.
In this video I show you how with the right food choices and time-restricted eating.

    1) Food choices
    - avoid low calorie foods; do portion control
    - artificial sweeteners-- inflammatory food; cortisol is increased by this (cortisol stress hormone auses belly fat
    - low fat but more sugar; refined/ processed food
    - EAT more high fiber food: veggies, beans, fruit, healthy fat (avocados, nuts, chia seeds, healthy oils)
    - Use herbs: cinnamon (helps blood sugar to be neutral); low sugar chocolate
    - Alcohol: moderate (1 drink a day; 12 oz beer, 5 oz wine, 1 oz hard) helps weight control
    2) Time restricted eating
    - intermittent fasting (12 hrs of the day to fast); you burn fat. Don't 3 hrs before eating. Delay breakfast until you reach the 12 hr window. This encourages fat (& sugar) burning.

I wish I had known this 10 years ago when I was going through menopause! I knew weight gain was likely, and over the years I put on maybe 20 pounds. Found out about time-restricted eating from my husband, who is T2D and HE found out about it through a focus group discussion on managing diabetes. Thinking I too might be getting insulin resistant, I started 16:8 IF, and have lost 8 pounds in two months. It's a sustainable lifestyle, and I'm hoping to lose all my "menopausal weight" in the next few months. Haven't noticed a decrease in belly fat yet, but there must be some because my pants fit better.

I find the 16/8 fast works much better, eating between the hours of 11am to 7pm and water fasting through the night. Water helps to keep you hydrated, blood pressure regulated and flushes any toxins out during your fasting period. I also find plant based eating the most effective way to keep the fat off. Vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes etc, it's all good. 👍

I have been KETO for two months but no weight loss. Might be because I added IF and extensive exercise. Too much too soon. Anyway, I'm alternating intermittent fasting and mostly KETO but my carb count will be slightly higher than 20%, it's stressing me out and raising my cortisol levels too much.

I like all this but just a comment on the beginning of the video when the doctor says "I am 48 so I understand menopause" I am 49 and have periods every 28 days like clockwork. Never have had cramps, I don't know what that is really. Period lasts 2 days. So 48 does not always equal menopause...

Hello, I am 59 so post menopausal but I take HRT. I started these around a year ago to help with some other issues and they help a lot but I did notice a 10 pound weight gain over the last year that is close to impossible to lose. Do you think it is the HRT or something else? Also, does this advice apply to post-menopausal women?

Oh thank you I feel isolated with illness and same always had flat tummy before uterus then both ovaries removed. Hate this flabby tummy. I think oestrogen lives in fat and that’s why we grow tummies.

im so glad i found this, i dont feel so alone anymore. i have always had what an hour glass shape. and then had my gall bladder removed and started noticing my belly getting bigger, and rolls which ive never had, alot of bloating and soooooooo uncomfortable in my own skin. no one understood. i blamed everything on the surgery. even tho had to come out. lol. i had my hormones checked recently and was just told by my obgyn im in menopause. i found dr becky and wowwwwwwww i feel im not so crazy anymore and feel theres hope to getting some what of my shape back. so much information and so clearly explained. and reading all the comments i know that theres alot of us struggling with the same issues. it sucks , really does. but ima give it all i got. Thank you
