Contrabass Trombone in Big Band

  • Published on May 3, 2011
  • Since almost no one has never uploaded a video of a contrabass trombone in a non-symphonic situation, and since BBb contras in general are quite rare, here is a short clip of me playing my BBb contrabass trombone with the Berklee Rainbow Band directed by Phil Wilson.

Very old trombones had a much smaller flare, usually they're made from the 60's or earlier

Too much low sound - one bass trombone and one contrabass trombone, which of course are the loudest instruments in the band, and also the bari sax. I can't hear the trumpets and even the other trombones.

Actually, the fact a bass and a contra can hold their own against the many trumpets is great. Trumpets get all the attention, give it to the basses for once.

What???? Does the composition specifically call for contrabass? I know of no jazz charts that call for that instrument. It's a nice sound on the octaves, but I question the color

Young musicians. I love female trombone players. This band has 2. At first I thought the contrabass T-bone was in uniform, but it was just the angle. He was in a dark suit.

Well, they are making them with 2 valves, but only in CC, not in BBb.

We only had 5 trombones in the band during the spring semester. Phil wanted me to play 3 optional tuba parts on the contrabass trombone. In addition he had 2 arrangements that he wrote for himself and for Jiggs (the flugelhorn/valve trombone duo) that I chose to play on valve trombone only because it sounded better with the flugel. Last semester during the summer I played bass trombone (4th), and next semester I'll probably play 1st or 2nd, depending on the needs of the orchestra

No. I played the entire tune on the contra.
It only looks like a single slide because of the camera angle.

The name of the tune is: "7th Floor Flat Rock". Phil Wilson did the arrangement and i think he also composed it.
I don't think that there is a recording of it anywhere, but i might be wrong.

What is the name of this piece? Is there a recording available? It's a really cool chart. The bass line at 0:53 is very grungy and dirty, love it!
The contrabass trombone sounds fantastic! I used it in some orchestral arrangements I did a few months ago, and I found it to be such a useful colour.
Look forward to more vids :)
