I don't understand it. If I were to vote Democrat in Texas, it would be way less value than if I voted Democrat in Florida. Another example would be I voted Republican in California. It has no meaning, as California is a very liberal state. If I were to vote Republican in a state like Ohio, it would have way more value just because I'm in a state that isn't very liberal nor conservative

Hey, this is an important conversation. A lot of people are on RU-clip selling the reasons that the electoral college is a antiquated and Popular Vote represents what the majority of the people want. The problem is: The Majority of people, including the Average person, are idiots! Even IQ statistics suggest that if you have a score above 120, you would be smarter than 93% of the people tested. Do we really want the majority making all our decisions for us? Maybe for a highschool diploma (or equivalent) should be required to vote. That could get rid of a lot of gangbanger dropouts.......js

For all of you who love our country, here is the way the system works. first off we have this system so states like California and new York do not force the agenda they want down the rest of the country's throat. who has more power, the house or the senate. easy, the senate. in the house each members vote counts for less, in the senate every state is equally represented and each members vote is the same value to allow smaller states with less people the same voice. this is the exact same with electoral college votes. the population is split among the votes and every state gets an equal number of votes to their population much like the house. very democratic. then the equality comes in like the senate and every state gets an additional 2 votes. 2 votes more for California means nothing really, but 2 extra votes for a state like Wyoming triples their voting power. the numbers on this video are slightly misleading because before you crunch the numbers you must first remove 2 votes from every state and then divide by population. then the numbers are much much closer. also every state is guaranteed 3 votes regardless of population in case a state like Wyoming slips beneath the threshold of gaining the first of their population based votes

    • Poisonshady313
      Poisonshady313 День назад

+Paul Pierce I'm going to answer this one in reverse.
"So I don't understand how are you or anyone who believes we should go to a popular vote doesn't also say well let's just get rid of the Senate. Because that's the entire structure the EC is built around. And the Senate is only around to give equal say to every state. And no one has a problem with that."
Because we don't ask the people of the United States to vote on the legislation in the senate. Literally all other elected officials in the country are elected by popular vote. Governors, Senators, Representatives, Mayors, etc... But every 4 years we elect another set of representatives. Not ones that campaign, not ones who we know... nameless, faceless individuals who are accountable to nobody and make a decision based on a vote cast by a handful of people who live in the state they're meant to represent as if the whole population of that state voted the same way.
The people already vote for their state and federal legislators. Either let the already elected officials elect the president without that messy, lopsided, ultimately meaningless song and dance called the electoral college, or let the people vote in a popular vote the same way they vote for their governors. Or let only the governors vote. One state, one vote. 26 to win. All three of those ideas are more fair than what we have now.
"So in reality you are disparity about the EC is that each state receives two votes for their senators. This is the very thing that the founding fathers put in place so that larger States with larger populations didn't run the country without smaller States having a say."
Nope. My problem with the EC is that is does the opposite of what you claim it does, which I believe I have demonstrated over and over again, even with a little help from your citation of the Washington Post.
"it is not based on 538. It is based off of the number of representatives in the house and the senate plus 3 for DC. Therefore the population division of the Electoral College is 435. It is based off of the census. Then each state receives another two votes for their senators"
At first glance I'd say you're splitting hairs. Making a distinction without a difference. But upon closer inspection, what you're saying makes it even worse for your case. It makes it seem like Wyoming has more people than it does, because a single electoral vote your way is still worth more than the population of Wyoming... but then California's 53 population based electors are basically equal to the whole state's population, without diminishing California's electoral control.
So that phantom number of non-voters whose power (in the hands of a small handful of voters) overshadows the whole population of several small states grows even larger, making those smaller states even less significant.

    • Paul Pierce
      Paul Pierce День назад

+Paul Pierce ""In April 2016, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that drawing districts based on total population (as opposed to population of eligible voters) satisfied the “one person, one vote” principle in the Equal Protection Clause." Washington PostSo the supreme court disagrees with your premise that total population shouldn't be used. Also, since the numbers are based on 1 vote per house member, or for every 500,000 people, and then 2 extra votes for senate then the way it works out is simple. all the smaller states have a larger voice per capita then larger states which is by design so large states with large population centers don't control the country."
This wasn't about the electoral college or the presidential election, this was about how to draw districts for congress. I understand that one affects the other, but the context of the article doesn't help you to make your point. I'm not suggesting that we use eligible voters for the purpose of drawing congressional districts. I'm suggesting that we change the way we elect the president.
Plus, you've helped me to make my point:
"decision the other way would have shifted political power away from urban areas, where Democrats usually dominate, and toward more Republican-friendly rural areas."
See that? Using eligible voters instead of total population WOULD HAVE SHIFTED POLITICAL POWER AWAY FROM URBAN AREAS WHERE DEMOCRATS USUALLY DOMINATE, AND TOWARD MORE REPUBLICAN-FRIENDLY RURAL AREAS.
It's what I've been saying all along.
Interesting to note it was conservatives that wanted to shift away from using total population, when they're the ones so staunchly defending it in the context of the electoral college.
Thanks for pointing this out to me. You just shot yourself in the foot. Not sure how you're going to recover from that.
"this has been talked about for 200+ years. it hasn't changed. it should not change. to see why it works let take the extremes California and Wyoming again."While California has one electoral vote per 712,000 people, Wyoming - the least populous state in the country - has one electoral vote per 195,000 people." Washington PostTherefore a vote in Wyoming is worth 3.7 times what a California vote is... so I think it works out the problem of large state vs small state quite well while states like mine, Indiana, are very close to exact representation."
This is what I was talking about when I said the right and the left both use the same terrible argument, even though one side talks about it as a positive and the other a negative.
Here's the thing... we don't grant candidates electoral votes per x number of people. If we did, California would have only given Clinton 15 electors in 2016. The total population is divided by 538 which gives us the value of an electoral vote. Those are then given to the states according to their population. This gives California 65 votes. But then we shuffle the numbers to give small states their two extra electors, and as a result California ends up with 55 (which is why I keep using 33 million instead of 39 million). Consequently, your method of looking that the numbers is entirely irrelevant. BECAUSE ELECTORAL VOTES ARE BASED ON POPULATION, NOT VOTER TURNOUT.
Compared to California, a vote in Wyoming is worthless because California's 8.7 million Clinton voters swing with a bat the size of 33 million people. You need 19 Wyomings to reach 55 electoral votes.
BTW... Arizona and Indiana have the same amount of electors. Arizona gets visited a lot by candidates during the general election. Indiana gets visited 1/5th as much. Because Arizona's a swing state. In the EC, Arizona matters. Indiana does not.
Whereas in a popular vote, every vote matters.

+Paul Pierce "you realize that the EC is a popular vote by each state... and the numbers of population it is based of is from the census."
Yes, I realize both of those things. The second thing kind of ruins the first thing though, because the population is full of people who can't or don't vote.
"On top of that I am a believer that my children and people who have problems voting should be represented, which they are in the EC."
They are represented. In Congress. However, when it comes to Presidential elections, we don't ask to hear from children, felons, illegals, and dead people. None of them can vote. Yet their numbers are still accounted for by the number of electors, based on population, in their state. It's like if the NY Yankees won against the Tampa Bay Rays not because of runs scored, but because more fans can fit in their stadium. The unimportant thing is what's being counted.
So when the children, felons, illegals, and dead people (not all of the dead people... just the ones who died since the census) of California out number the whole population of several smaller states, it takes many more small states to make up for it. Just because there are more electors than Wyoming might deserve based on population, it's a drop in the bucket compared to California, who has far more electors than they ought to based on the number of people who actually vote.
It would be easier, and in my opinion far more fair, if a bunch of little states only had to make up for 8.7 million votes, instead of 33 million votes from a state where only 18 million are eligible to vote. And oh yeah, if the 4.5 million red votes from California were actually counted towards the final tally... that would be nice too.
"Then the very big problem of there being no crystal ball telling us how many people will vote so we can "distribute them properly"."
That's the beauty of the popular vote. You won't know what the majority number is until all the votes are counted. Which means, in the most literal way possible, every vote counts.

"Your entire argument is based around you wanting a popular vote. The EC is a popular vote in each state. Then each state is given completely equal EC votes based on population percentage of the total US population and then 2 extra votes to account for smaller States having less power to make their votes meaningful."
I already addressed that. It's unfair to give large states the power of their full population when approx half are eligible to vote, and only a fraction of those eligible actually do vote.
"No matter how you look at it, removing the EC strips power from smaller States with less population and moves that power to larger States with large population centers."
Wrong. I've given you two ways of looking at it that show directly the opposite.
      1. You take away the power of 24 million phantom votes from a state where only approx 9 million people voted for a particular candidate. This way voters from smaller states don't have to work so hard to cancel out the votes from large states.
      2. NY + CA + IL = approx 19% of the electoral vote, whereas blue votes from NY+CA+IL = approx 10.6% of the total popular vote (in 2016)... which means the EC cuts the power of states with large population centers in half.
If you think I'm wrong, just saying so isn't enough anymore... you need to show me how.

Saying that the founding fathers wrote it therfore it is right is a weak argument here as it is with the second ammendment. Every thing and right must be decided upon logically weighing the cost against and benefit. A parliamentary system is far superior. Also, the the idea that giving fewer people more voting power is offset by swing states. If the swing states also happen to be sparringly populated "flyover" states then you essentially end up with minority rule which is arguably worse than majority rule. You also talk about the worth of votes but if you're a republican in a blue state or a Liberal in a red state, you essentially have no vote. Is that not a case of mob rule albeit on a lower level?

A truly educated and humble person wouldn't feel the need to use offensive terms like "tranny" to prove a point. They'd defend their argument using facts and respecting the other side... Funny how he's respectful in "change my mind" videos where he has to be decent human in front of strangers but gets to be the vile person he truly is when surrounded by his like-minded people :)

Democracy was how Hitler came into power.

    • John Doe

not really. Nazis did not constitute the majority (they were the minor majority) of Parliament and Hitler wasn't voted chancellor but rather appointed by Hindenburg

You constantly talk about how we're not a democracy, but I think you ment that we're not a pure democracy, a republic is a type of democracy .

It is so elementary I am surprised this has to be explained so many times. "And for the Republic for which it stands". Duh!?

Pretty sad I remember being in 8th grade thinking that the electoral college was stupid but yeah wasn’t for long. I didn’t know anything in 8th grade. Sad that’s where the leftist mind is at

Wow i feel dumb, I though we were a democracy so I got confused and mad at Crowder when he said we weren't but what he said later in the video made sense so ok.

Sad thing is Adam will never bring this series up, beacuse then he'd have to make a video stating that you'd make good points.. buuut (insert invalid argument here)

*And what will happen to Adam's massive ego based on reading from a script then?*

Steven Crowder you cant simply say democracy is evil because "the founding fathers" said it is evil. They also liked slavery and didn't believe in women rights. Your arguments are normally much more solid. To say democracy is evil and that citizens cant be trusted to vote for what is best is hypocritical because we trust them to vote for their congressional representatives and a slew of other political seats.
