IIRC what stopped F1 multi wheel experimentation was a rule change stipulating four wheels only.
Typical unimaginative office type morons at play here. You only need to look at F1 today to see what nearly 40 years meddling has done to the sport. It is utterly boring.
I have a rule change for them, a 1litre V16 with supercharger - NO TURBOS. Boost limited to 75psi multi stage allowed, multi everything. Remove the 4 wheel only rule too.
I want to bring back the sound of the 1.5l 2 stage supercharged BRM of the early 1950s but in a modern format. Watch the crowds come back to this sound:

FYI, the 6x6 Land Rover "perentie" was not actually shown, and are all but completely decommissioned by the Australian defence force. They are now mostly owned by civilians and you also technically need a light truck licence to drive them as their gross weight is 5.6T. They will do
100km/h but that's forcing the boundaries and prefer 80-90km/h. Mine gets around 22L of diesel to 100km too...... @visioracer, let me know if you want some footage to post up.

None of the landrovers in your video were actually perenties. The perentie has dual linked leaf springs in the rear. All the trucks in the video were costum builds with another normal landrover axle added.

No you do not need a truck licence you need a truck licence for anything over 7.5 tonnes who is giving wrong information about europe, non of those vehicle are classed as trucks in the the UK last time i look the UK is in europe spain has a limit 3.5 tonne for pickup vehicle to become commercial so that would mean the mercedes is still a car in Spain which is also europe. This is just two example in europe where you made a mistake about classifications of vehicles in fact within the EU there is no maximum weight for a car nor is there a limitation on axles so where you got your info from for say the Mercedes is a truck and you need a truck licence is beyond me as there are no such rules within the EU .

  • darthbuzz

The 4 driven wheels on F1 cars were not ridiculous.
The 4 rear wheels on the Williams were much smaller and had less drag. They were also slimmer and allowed room on the underside for more ground effect down force.
The idea was not killed due to lack of funds and extra weight. The 6 wheel F1 cars like the Williams were stopped by regulations because they were too fast.
Didn't know about either the Ford or Dodge. Good video.

    • Diana Burghduf
      Diana Burghduf 2 months ago

I wouldn't say they were too fast, they only managed 3rd place.

    • MrWombatty
      MrWombatty 8 months ago +3

Also noticed that the ones with the extra rear wheels also ran disc-brakes on all of them, so that must've have given them an advantage into the corners!

    • darthbuzz
      darthbuzz 9 months ago +3

      Brilliant. Thanks for that.
My personal 6 wheeler favorite that I can't remember in this video was the Formula 1 ELF Tyrrell P34. The one with 4 wheels at the front. Just a nice looking car, that and the Renault 5.

    • kevin paul halliday
kevin paul halliday 9 months ago +4

I also read that in wet weather the leading rear wheels could be fitted with wet tyres and the following wheels could be fitted with slicks as the wheels in front of them could already have 'swept' the water off the track. Interesting concept anyway.

  • Jack Duno
    Jack Duno 9 months ago

Wait, you need a special license to drive a passenger vehicle weighing over 7,500 lbs in Europe? In Canada it's 25,000 lbs... You could daily a Pete 389 on a G license so long as you're not hauling

    • Jack Duno
      Jack Duno 9 months ago

All countries seem to have their own confusing (to outsiders) take on licensing. I think it's interesting how low the maximum combined vehicle-trailer and trailer alone weights are on your B license. I'm assuming the B is what most people have, which would be comparable to our G license over here.
The unsettling part for me at least, is over here an every-day G license holder could legally drive anything from a Smart car, to something like a 40ft motorhome. Or even operate a tow truck so long as it and the towed car are under 25,000 lbs combined

    • VisioRacer
      VisioRacer  9 months ago

Haha, no chance here. You have the B license for every car under 3,500 kg and then there is the C license for trucks above that. Plus you can make the E license once you need to tow a trailer. In case of the B+E, the car + trailer must be under 3,500 kg together or there is the C+E for every regular truck driver. Here it is in detail: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_driving_licence

Those Unimog 6x6 trucks where purchased by defence forces & the UN around the globe (although they did assemble them here in Oz), but basically that AMG is a G-Wagon modified to fit on a Unimog 6x6 chassis, but probably much cheaper to buy the Unimog, then you'll have an ideal vehicle to built an awesome adventure-camper!

  • Gustav Meyrink
    Gustav Meyrink 9 months ago

I thought the G36 was created by grafting a G body on a Unimog chassis which already comes with portal axles, wheel inflation system, a 6 wheel version and a surprising number of diff locks.
The Tyrell ultimately failed because the tyre manufacturer did not develop the small size any further for the next season.

It might be potentially advantageous to, rather than individually spring the corner wheel pairs, to instead put a heave spring between them to create a sort of virtual bogey. This set up would allow for bump compliance while also resisting both body roll and aerodynamic loads. An actual bogey wouldn’t be a good option because there’d be no camber gain under load... unless the difference between the net front corner ride heights could be used to tilt it, hmmmm.
