The mysteries of the octopus

  • The octopus is one of the most bizarre life forms on Earth - one of the smartest, most interesting, and most alien. It can camouflage itself in a flash, squeeze its entire body through a one-inch hole, and use their brains (yes, it has nine of them) to think and play. Chip Reid visits scientists at New England Aquarium in Boston, and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass., and talks with Sy Montgomery, author of "The Soul of an Octopus," about these curious creatures.

Octopus don't have big brains, they only see in black and white.
They have auxiliary brains to their main brain that control chromatophores.
Octopus have weird sensors in their skin than can detect and color.
The weird shape of the eye detects patterns they can morph there body into weird shapes.
This behavior was designed by God and not by evolution.

UMMMMMM YELL YEAH “DYNAMIC CAMOUFLAGE” IS A FORM OF INTELLIGENCE? Doesn’t take much intelligence to realize it requires intelligence to morph into appearing camouflaged w/surroundings. Octopus would have to think about what it must change into to catch its prey. If it just happened instinctively, how would the octopus know it should match the shape of object it’s using as camouflage?

It's kind of a jump to compare an octopus to a human. An octopus makes hundreds of decisions a day and can camouflage itself. Humans come from all over the world to visit the grand canyon and some fall in by accident....and a billion other stupid things.

  • I Have a Pony
    I Have a Pony 2 months ago +1

For those who who say ewww look in the mirror. For those who cut them up as they writhe around...you have no soul. For those who eat them it will come full circle for the heartless and unempathetic. Many years ago in Rocky Point, MX I found one about ten inches and it wouldnt let go of my hand. It was impossible to be afraid. The hardest thing was to leave it, to go home. He would follow me and if I went back in the water it immediately grabbed my arm and wouldn't let go. Im not much of a water person but my fear of animals is very low.

Stop eating the octopus stop eating red meat what are we supposed to eat we are the supreme creatures so therefore we eat what we want and what we can eat. Are we supposed to sustain ourselves just on plant based food come on now that's not realistic. I personally find octopus very tasty and enjoy eating it. I do respect your opinion but it's just not realistic we all have to eat and not just plants

I used to have a Caribbean Reef octopus back in the late 80s. A wonderful addition to our family; we would watch him and he would watch us... I'm currently working on a book about him. *An obvious note: An octopus is not an easy being to take care of so, no running out all willy-nilly and getting one for a pet, just for fun. The setup and maintenance are expensive and time-consuming.

@Loraine Spencer true but long ago I decided not to eat anything that had a brain or a face or was a living creature .
A friend and I years ago were at a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown Philadelphia that specialized in Sea Food ... we were looking in the aquarium that had these big shrimp and she said she never knew they had eyes and all that... I said yeah because when they cook them for you they cut the heads off ... she ended up not ordering anything that was a living creature there and we both had just the vegetarian dishes .

Alicia Geesman You need to look it up!
In English the plural of octopus is octopuses.
Originally Greek in origin, the word octopus is pluralized as octopuses.
To say octopi is completely wrong as octopi is Latin.
Latin does not pluralize Greek or English.
Before you criticize someone else's language, make sure you are correct words.
