Why I live a zero waste life | Lauren Singer | TEDxTeen

  • Published on May 27, 2015
  • Lauren is an Environmental Studies graduate from NYU and former Sustainability Manager at the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, and the amount of trash that she has produced over the past three years can fit inside of a 16 oz. mason jar.
Lauren Singer is author of the Zero Waste blog, Trash is for Tossers and founder of organic cleaning product company, The Simply Co.

Through her blog, she has empowered millions of readers to produce less waste by shopping package-free, making their own products and refusing plastic and single-use items.

Her work has been profiled by New York Magazine, MSNBC, NBC, AOL, CNN, Yahoo, Fox Business, BBC and NPR, among others.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I’ve already taken steps to be zero waste like a menstrual cup, shopping more at thrift stores, using reusable straws and cups and cutlery, and recycling as much as possible but my biggest issue is going vegetarian or vegan. I LOVE meat and fish and pretty much any animal product. I’m also super lazy and hate to cook because I love the simplicity of packaged food. If anyone has any tips to slowly go off of animal products I’d love to hear them.

What zero waste people hide from other people is the cost of living zero waste. Notice none of them talk about the high cost of going zero waste.

You do not live a *zero* waste lifestyle. No one does. Trust me, I am a firm believer and follower of the low impact movement. I'm also a vegan and an environmentalist. Your phone's made of plastic. You use electronics. You own a car. Or a bike. Bikes require tires. Most vehicles do. Your clothes are made of polyester, nylon, synthetic fibers - unless you are very aware of where you get your clothes from and what fabric they're made from (ideally, organic cotton would be best). See where I'm going? Veganism and zero waste are, honestly, extreme terms and should really be used sparingly. Why do you think people scare away and there's this bubble that's popped of ex vegans and ex zero wasters? It's because it's an unattainable ideal. It's romantic and sweet, but it's not realistic. What we can try is strive to be more aware of our surroundings and of our imprint on the environment. I could go on. The Fairly Local Vegan tackles this same issue. She calls people to call the zero waste movement a low waste movement. I mean, people, come on - face it. You live in commercially designed apartments and houses and the plumbing systems and construction materials aren't really Eco-friendly, unless, again, you're some sort of current-day guru and you've managed to completely transcend reality and are now levitating or living in a mud hut with no Internet (since WiFi and the Internet are not zero waste either, they require complex infrastructures made out of petroleum-based materials).

I've seen too many "teens" end up depressed because of the way the world works and bad free time management, always the parent's fault. My advice: be an activist. Its a social activity that won't interfere with your mental health. Single shops won't change the world. Legislations will.

Baking soda itself can't be used everyday on you teeth cause it ruins them on a long term. Making your own product is such a nice thing to do, but you can't make everything you need or anyway you have to be sure that is safe and effective as you think.
Anyway, it's a good message to give to people, even if you can't live a zero waste life, everyone can do something to make the planeta better place.
