I hadn't realised that this song was to be sung by Rita Moreno in the new film version. Totally unexpected. I'm not ashamed to admit I cried like a baby during her performance. The weight of the world has been on all our shoulders. We're all searching for a happiness. 'Hold my hand and I'll take you there - somehow, some day, somewhere.....'
I walked away from the room. Totally ruined it. Always have to give it a different twist and ruin it. And just in case, I'm Puerto Rican and that was my favorite movie. I cannot find enough words to say how much I dislike this remake.
I cried too
Me too. It was the highlight of that film, bar none.
Close your eyes
And we’re halfway there
Take my hand,
I’ll take you there

Quelle émotion, quelle voix. Merci à Spielberg de l'avoir intégrée à son film. (Annick. France)
Spielberg went on record to say that this song was recorded live on set and that Rita had a cold when she sang it. Just in case you need another reason to love Rita Moreno.
amazing...I'm 'one of the originals'
@troybirch You're crazy. "Ripped the soul from the message", what are you talking about?? this song makes perfect sense in the context of the story, you're completely crazy.
@troybirch “A man loving a woman” is literally only half the sentence describing the story. West Side Story and the original Romeo and Juliet are both “A tragedy of a man loving a woman in a society that wants to violently keep them apart”.
This song is about wishing for a future where those forces won’t keep people from loving each other anymore, and giving the song to an alumni of the original film playing a character whose lover is already dead is a bleak statement about how little racial tensions have resolved in the half-century since the original film. It doesn’t serve the same purpose as in the original film, but staging it the same as the original would be willfully ignorant of 70 years of knowing that things didn’t get better and the lovers always fail.
That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever and seems more like a gentleman’s attempt to explain the performance. Personally, this ripped the soul from the message of a movie. The story is not of a new character’s vision. But of a man loving a woman. Giving her this song was a very very big price to pay for the “endorsement” of the remake some felt was needed for this version.
@Mark Silverman I think the whole point was to ease some of the dramatic parts. We did just see Riff and Bernardo kick it, and a terrible fight break out. That being said, it does maybe not not allow Maria and Tony another moment together, and I don’t know if this song would have helped it, since the chemistry was okay at best anyway, but at the very least, it is different and still creates a very powerful moment relating to its themes anyway.
The song takes on a whole new meaning with Rita singing it on her own.
@Boots S Exactly! Sometimes the acting is more important than vocal perfection. This was perfect.
That's why she serves as the bridge of old and new in this movie
Having Valentina sing it while sitting at the table she used to share with Doc, looking at the picture of the two of them together back when he was still alive, is just heartbreaking.
Yes!!! I dont know what it is about it but yeah it's so much more touching
@Boots S amen
The character of Valentina was a breast stroke of brilliance. I think here the character is reflecting on her youth and marriage with Doc, who recently died. It’s possible that Tony reminds her a lot of Doc and she sees a bit of herself inside these two young people. I think she’s reflecting here on the prejudice she probably faced with Doc and is probably tired of it, but is hoping that she will be able to see it.
I can relate as the son of a Mexican American man and half Irish white woman. They managed to work and 30 years now have mostly happy marriage. Proving love between people who are different has become almost possible in more topical times.
@Anonymous Gay Very much felt the same. Her character adds so much more depth to the story. Valentina at once shows that it's possible for this love to work out -- a future tony and maria didn't get -- while also showing that even if you have that dream relationship, you can't fully escape the weight of the world around you. It somehow makes Tony and Maria's love story both more beautiful and more tragic.
I wonder if her character is going to be as mixed up as doc was.
I remember in the original version doc was really mixed up about the tension that was going on between the Jets and the sharks.
I like to think of this version as what Tony and María could have been
That’s exactly what I felt in this scene. I am a multicultural baby and the persecution my parents faced when it wasn’t the norm to be to races together was immense. This film did an exceptional job at personifying both cultures
It is unbelievable that she was sick when she recorded this. It came out so beautiful. Such a talent. Steven Spielberg said she was an integral part of making this movie. Working with the actors, the choreography, giving them first hand insight of being a Puerto Rican in New York at that time, plus her involvement in the first movie.
I was so excited for this movie ever since Rita was announced to be part of it. And she didn't disappoint. This is the big emotional highlight for me as a fan of WSS since high school.
the fact that she's sick almost works in the song's favour here, and it really highlights the intimacy that a movie performance can achieve that a stage show might not be able to. The song sounds a little bit breathy and nasal but it works perfectly because it makes it seem like it's really a song she's singing to herself and her late husband in private rather than at the audience. it almost reminds me of bring him home from les mis in that sense.
She made the movie!! She was the star!
Out of the whole movie I had the most trepidation about Somewhere being given to Rita Morena but I was wrong, it was the most beautiful and heartfelt rendition of this song I have ever heard and I was in tears. She was incredible and I admit I did not expect it. This movie was breathtaking.
Even more meaningful to me given that Rita Morena played Anita in the original movie. Full circle.
There is something so broken yet hopeful in Rita's version of the song.
For those of us who have been the outcasts of society, POC, LGBTIQ, etc this feels like she is speaking to all of us.
60 Years after killing it as Anita and winning an Oscar...
Rita Moreno's still got it!
This was one of the absolute best moments in the remake. This song gains another but yet beautiful meaning and the fact that it's Rita Moreno singing it is extremely moving.
I’m willing to bet Rita thought of her mother when she was singing this. I honestly just learned about her immigrating from Puerto Rico with her mother because her mother was running away from an awful marriage. It’s such a beautiful song.
My Grandpa came to America from the Mexican border. And he loved a long happy life with my Nana Coco
Rita is true legend. This gives me chills & I can feel every word she sings.
The choice of choosing Rita Moreno as (not spoiling it) and having her sing this was a brilliantly perfect idea. She gives this motherly calm and safe advice which I took personally to heart. I really do love this song.
Please watch West Side Story 2021!
true! i dont know how to explain it but she put so much empathy and wisdom to the delivery of the song...this is the best choice they made for the film rather that Tony and Maria singing it😭
90 YEARS OLD SINGING LIKE THIS. A MIRACLE. RITA FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS ACADEMY AWARD 2022
Here's a place for us
Somewhere a place for us
Peace and quiet and open air
Wait for us
Somewhere
There's a time for us
Someday a time for us
Time together with time to spare
Time to learn
Time to care
Someday, somewhere
We'll find a new way of living
We'll find there's a way of forgiving
Somewhere
There's a time for us
Someday a time for us
Time together with time to spare
Time to learn
Time to care
Someday, somehow
We'll find a new way of living
We'll find there's a way of forgiving
Somewhere
There's a place for us
A time and a place for us
Hold my hand and we're half way there
Hold my hand
And I'll take you there
Somehow
Someday, somewhere
I'm literally crying. She made it even more emotional.
@Drip man with no bitches I feel she's singing too as a heartbroken woman who is coming to the end of her life-watching helplessly as young people destroy themselves and she can't do anything to stop it, but still singing that maybe...one day...against all odds..somewhere there might be hope. Helpless, like a lot of us feel right now. It resonated so differently this time around. I cried all night after watching this.
@Gorsh _ You are right but..there is something heartbreaking about a widow who’s marriage was filled with love but not much peace. She’s singing about having a second chance with the man she loves.
😞 not I... I feel the song being sung by two lovers in each other's arms looking for hope when the whole world is against them is for more powerful than it being sung by a store owner who is in her twilight. I understand who is singing is very important but that coulda been an extra. Seeing Maria look into Tony's eyes in fear that their love will end to hear Tony sooth her has always been a heart warming moment for me
@Lake Union Me Four 😭
@Venus Warrior Me THREE ! ! !
Rita Moreno deserves an Oscar for her performance in that scene. I cried again and again. With everything going wrong in today's world, the words of this song are so important now more than ever and Ms. Moreno blew me away with her soul in this song.
Well done. Bien hecho, alma hermosa.
Having Rita Moreno singing this song was genius.
Having Valentina sing this instead was honestly the BEST decision they could have made for this adaptation. It gives me the same emotional of "Someday" from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, in that the singer is simply wishing/praying that there will be no more hatred or tragedy in the future 🥺💗
Spielberg really did a phenomenal job directing this film. I loved it from start to end even if some of the songs were in the wrong place - It worked. And the cast were incredible, Rita OWNED this song - Marni Nixon would be so dang proud
@Rosie Rennie That was Betty Wand
@Manuel Orozco No but Marni Nixon dubbed over Rita and many other women in Hollywood films and musicals when they were required to sing but couldnt - Thats why I said she would be proud, because Rita actually had a good singing voice
Marni Nixon was not the first to sing Somewhere
This version of Somewhere fit perfectly in the current film.
I didn't know what to do with myself after watching this. I cried all night. Something about this song coming from a heartbroken woman who is coming to the end of her life-watching helplessly as young people destroy themselves and she can't do anything to stop it, but still singing that maybe...one day...against all odds..somewhere there might be hope. Helpless, like a lot of us feel right now. It resonated so differently this time around. This movie was a crowning achievement.
What a screen presence she was/is! It was as if she were poignantly singing to the first movie...
PS Audience last night started applauding when she first came on the screen..:-)
Such a stunning and charming performance with so many different meanings on so many levels. I also liked how they got ethnically correct actors in this movie making it more accurate in those terms. This was foreshadowing on the sadness that was about to come... the message stands that hatred can be overcome and love conquers all. Although sadly for Maria and Tony it won't be here.
I'm not usually a downer ending person. But for the sake of the hard work put into the movie, i chose to let it slide and take in the beauty.
She’s 90 years old. What a legend. ❤️
Old enough to be my Abuela
Rita you are such an incredible artist. this version of the song is literally amazing - like this new West Side Story
I've been a fan of Rita since i saw her as Tuptim in the King and I. It's hard to believe she was a Latina playing an Asian character. Two years later, i saw the first WSS movie for the first time on TCM. And my first glimpse of her as a triple threat
Like you guys I was almost dreading this moment in the film, not just because this is one of the beautiful songs ever written, but I knew it would blow me apart. But I never expected Rita to sing it and I cried like a baby. Brilliant casting, but just not that, it touched my soul.
Tbh I didn't read too much about this movie, I just saw that Rita was involved as a producer and I was like "neat !"
So it was the biggest surprise to see here as "Doc". I was SO HAPPY. And the movie gives her so many moments to shine, as if Steven respected the woman that much HE KNEW he had to.
And so I cried a few times. At the end of course. I may have seen the original movie countless times but to see this scene again in a different way ... And I cried bc of Rita. Twice, she has learnt about Bernado. Twice, she experienced Anita's sexual assault. That just broke me.
But they gave her a song. It's "Somewhere". One of the most beautiful. And I was so thankfull.
I'm glad Rita just wasn't a glorified cameo, I didn't expect her to sing at all but I'm glad she did🤧
This rendition adds more nuance to the song cause of her character having already experience what Tony and Maria are going through🥺🤧
West side story holds a very special place in my heart, it was me and my moms favorite and sadly she passed away in July. Hearing this version, im crying so much. I wish she was here to witness listening to this
💞
She is
I will love this song forever.
EGOT LEGEND RITA MORENO. So glad she is back for this version.
We all love Rita. This just gives us another reason. Spectacular.
Takes alot to make me cry but cry I did at that scene. Fabulous Rita.
I did not cry watching it because i was afraid of doing it infront of my Dad. I know as Baymax would say it's okay to cry but still.
Precious moment. Glad to know I wasn’t the only one crying during this scene/song.
I rarely cry in movies, but there were several scenes in this beautiful remake that had be shedding a few tears.
The character of Valentina was like a bridge.. between the old generation and the new generation.
That's exactly how i felt as i was watching.
This moment in cinema is so magical. I was so moved, that I was surprised when I felt the warm tears streaming down my face, I didn’t realise that I’m crying already.
Cried at age 9. Cried 60!years later. So powerful. Thank you Steven and Rita
Still brings a tear to my eye! She is the book end of west side story!
What a talent! We had the honor of watching this icon perform. It was an honor to watch Rita Moreno. There were rivers flowing from my eyes as this song was playing.
In a production full of amazing moments, this was my favorite, hands down. Giving this to Rita was a stroke of genius! This is flawless.
I am bawling my eyes out! This version is so touching after hearing how Hollywood treated Rita all those years ago...
Will always love this song
Absolutely beautiful, sang with true emotion and meaning, I listened to the soundtrack of the 2021 movie, it is magnificent and I am very much looking forward to seeing the new movie.
Stunning!
I can't stop myself crying.
This version of this song will be played at my wedding
Thank you Rita. Sung with such depth of feeling, exactly how I had always felt it should be, as if a prayer.
Thank you, Rita Moreno, and thank you, Steven Spielberg, for this wonderful surprise. Best wishes from Germany...
Love this…absolutely the most beautiful!
God Bless Rita. Such a talented lady and this is the Greatest version of this song ever! The emotion she put into this is heartbreaking.
Bravo! What a stunning performance. Completely heartbreaking. I cried like a baby.
It’s sounds hopeful, hopeless, and desperate at the same Rita is amazing
I love this fragile, natural and very expressive record from a lovely, mature and wonderful lady. Truly awesome. ❤️
Ok, so knowing what I know about the original stage version of this song, which was sung by an offstage soprano, I think giving this song to Rita makes SO MUCH SENSE. Like yes, when it's a duet between Maria and Tony it's beautiful, but this... this carries the theme of the entire production of how you wish that the two lovers could make it, but knowing in your heart that it's not going to end well.
Spielberg making this a montage was the best thing he did in the movie and he did a lot of really damn good things in the movie
I never been so hyped to see one of his movies until now.
Stunning. Simply stunning.
I cried all the way through this song. Beautiful performance. Wonderful film x
Me too! 😭
So wonderful song so relaxing
Rita is the Queen. The first PR woman to earn all her titles and awards to the max.
In fact, Lin Manuel won more than her.
And soon Lin will join his PR brothers and sisters
This scene when she sang this song was so amazing. I am a 50 something male and I cried doing this.
God bless it, how is she *still* so damn good? It's unfair to the rest of us regular humans. ❤
This was definitely an unexpected turn from the Maria and Tony duet in the 1961 version, but it fit so well having Valentina sing this. It just wasn't about Maria and Tony anymore. It was about everyone who was suffering from the losses involved in the Jets vs. Sharks feud
I have not had the time to see the movie yet. But i love Rita singing the song. I find it so surreal that a former Anita is singing Somewhere. But i do hope to see the remake soon. Nice instrumental arrangement
My favorite version 😍 ❤ Didn't see it this subtle, fragile yet powerful in such a delicate interpretation
Please give her the oscar this year.
Thank you, beautiful lady ❤️ This is my absolute favorite song from WSS and you've touched my heart.
The most beautiful song from the beautiful story ever. I will always treasure one of the last autographed pictures of Natalie Wood, given to me by a mutual friend just five weeks before her tragic untimely death in 1981. May these memories endure forever.
I think it was far better the original duet by the lovers, dreaming of a place where they could be together just before the sad ending. I enjoyed the other meaning much more.
Rita Moreno, being in the new West Side Story film, made me emotional, as she created the role in the original film, and it got me all teary eyed
Saw this movie yesterday! Damn plate of onions were next to me when Rita started singing lol.
Well done!
Rita can still sing.
Very sweet!
Wonderful ! so touching this voice ! Thank you RITA !!!!!
I really enjoyed the new film...but I would have loved this song to have been sung by Tony and Maria. They could have had Valentina do the beginning or a reprise while still including Tony and Maria. That would have been 🙌
I cried during this performance!
Great. Rita Moreno is a legend.
Been a fan of her since i saw her in the King and I as Tuptim
I didn't know they moved this song for this version. I cried. No shame.
Casting Rita Moreno in this musical and not having her sing would feel wrong. Regardless, that she is pleased with the new version is a strong statement.
I'm gonna watch this in theaters next week with my mom. I'm hoping it will be really good. Normally I hate remakes other than Disney ones, but I saw the trailer and it looked good.
I started weeping when this song started in the movie - a song still of our time.
Cried. She is 90 and i am so happy younger people get to 'meet' her
Been a fan of her since i was 13. I'm 29 now
Loved this… I too was crying 😭 . Cant wait to see it again ❤️
Beautiful Rita! So proud 👏 👏 👏
Rita Moreno, QUEEN
This was just so brilliant on Spielberg's part to have Rita sing this song.
Linda canción.
I was wary of the recontextualisation of this song by handing it over to Valentina rather than letting it stay with Tony and Maria. Then I saw the film and wept like a baby. Not even ashamed.
I thought the same but when the song and scene played out the way it did, I felt it gave it so much more weight. It wasn’t just about Tony and Maria anymore. I bawled my eyes out.
I can see her face, young and full of fire when I listen to this, wonderful wonderful woman.
Three minutes of perfection
Honestly, I see no difference between the Tony and Maria duet version and Valentina's solo version. They both were made to made us want to cry for different meanings. And Rita's version certainly did make me cry when I first watched it in theatres.
It was magnificent.
😍Quien tuvo, retuvo. Rita, fantástica 😍
As if Rita singing it didn't make it so much more emotional, it started raining by me mid song
Tears. I cried at the absolute beauty of this song. Rita Moreno is a national treasure.
Goosebumps.
Five words in and the tears came.
If she doesn't win a second Academy Award I will riot on every social media outlet I have and never watch The Oscars again (then again I already don't)
@Julianne Hannes heck
Just give
Rita , Rachel , Mike , David , and Ariana the nominee
Because 5 of them kill it in the movie
@M.Syauqi Abdurahman I will try my damnest to get it trending and petitioned against. Color Purple was the first strike, Eddie Murphy was the second strike, and this will be the third and final strike. The Academy better get their ducks in a row.
Heck
If she isn't nominated for the oscar
We riot
I love this
It isn't just young love that can evoke tears
a reminder this was sung live on set 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Rita Moreno is great. She sings this wonderfully. But I don’t think the song works as well in this context as it does in the original. In the original, the two lovers singing to each other does a better job of eliminating disbelief at Maria’s seemingly hasty acceptance of Bernardo’s fate. Valentina singing it to herself leaves the dynamic of the two lovers open to undue speculation, the only check on disbelief being dialogue, which, in a musical, is comparatively ineffective at justifying the emotions of the characters. Having said that, it’s still great.
The original version in the stage production was supposed to be sung by an offstage soprano, so...
