Hey it could hold a Xeon or I9, 64GB of ram (128 maybe) and a GPU. Just add M2 or SSD. Got yourself a decent CGI 3D DCC wkstation or gaming rig. Or both.

To be honest, today's sponsor is actually helpful. I use it for a few months now, and it does find very cool codes..

I love these really unique components, it's a shame that the economy can't incentivise these kind of weird and wonderful products, I can't imagine ASRock was ever intending to make a profit on this.

I'd shoehorn a USB 3 hub in there somehow. Maybe even modify it to use the front panel headers instead of the normal output connectors, and you can then use it any time you run into this situation (no front port headers) at the cost of one port on the back. In this case I think I'd cascade one of those four into four more on top rather than sending it to the front. (I'd always want one of the two ports left open to "go direct" with a flash drive like the Samsung Fit that will happily gobble up power way beyond spec to increase write speeds -- but hubs usually won't feed it what it wants.)

Jeez! All I want is a 32 core wotsit with one petabyte of thingy, and loads of spiny, or non spinny things that will allow me to Irritate the fuck out of my relatives with crap, poorly synchronised sound, poorly coloured, and graded, video, whilst forcing them to sit there and watch everything in glorious 8K (filmed on a Red 8K camera).

my kid wants to be linus when he grows up, he's already expert at dropping lego bricks, and even attempted to mod my gaming rig, decorating it with half chomped, soggy toast triangles covered in marmite, and an attempt at liquid cooling using a bottle of toddler formula milk. It's important to start them young......

I would use a water cooling block on this cpu and Mainboard. Maybe a case with the pipes having connectors on the back to connect a very small but powerful Server to some Kind of water pipes that come out of the wall. So you would have very powerful and small Workstations/Servers only connected to power and some watercooling-circuit.

Might seem STUPID to hardcore techies but it has its place in the marketplace IMHO. Years ago I built what I intended to be a small form factor HD media PC for my grandparents that would be able game a little bit while using as little power as possible. I bought the lowest wattage multi-core cpu I could at the time, the best PCI-slot powered GPU i could and stuck it in a sexy mini-itx Lian Li case with a blu ray drive, SSD, 80+ cert PSU. It's still running great/snappy to this day and I think it's extremely sexy and small for a non-Apple desktop tower. The small case means that even my senior citizen grandparents can easily carry and move if needed and it's connected directly to a HDTV with HDMI so cabling is very simple for them. I could see mini-itx being appreciated by people who often carry their desktop to LAN parties as well. The only thing I suggest for people building a mini-itx desktop is getting a case that has the PSU aiming outward like the case in this video! It's the one thing that bothers me a lot about the mini-itx case I bought. Such a simple design switch that will give much lower temps and thus lower power consumption. Sorry for the wall of text but I felt like I had to comment in defense of mini-itx!

    • Andy Grace
      Andy Grace 14 days ago

Exactly. The last thing it's designed for is gaming. It's perfect for these newish dual mini-ITX motherboard setup. That's 112 threads in 2U rack case.

    • Climate Change Fan Club
Climate Change Fan Club 7 days ago

yeah, but if you can harness the raw compute power of those 2 GPU's it'll leave the 10 grand CPU standing. a theoretical 28 Teraflops at 32 bit precision.

    check the fan's pwm pin

    edit:
it has power, because it is spinning, it has ground because power cannot flow without a complete circuit thats 2 wires
it has a tachometer readout, thats another 1 wire
its spinning at full speed regardless of input, which sounds like a fan that doesnt have a tachometer pin and runs at 100% speed, which is indicative of fan headers that do NOT support voltage control for 3 pin fan headers. thats another 1 wire
    pwm fans have 4 pins
conclusion: the pwm fan pin is either damaged, covered, or bent out of place and not getting full contact
