Why the News Media is stealing from the Pro Wrestling playbook | Eric Bischoff | TEDxNaperville

  • Published on Nov 30, 2018
  • Professional Wrestling and Political News Media have become the ultimate tag team, both utilizing the exact same techniques and formula’s for a very specific outcome. And the outcome is not what you think it is… In 1991, Turner Broadcasting’s World Championship Wrestling (WCW) recruited Eric as an on-camera talent. His entrepreneurial instincts and interests quickly propelled him from talent through the corporate ranks to become WCW's President in 1998. Before leaving Turner Broadcasting in 1999, Eric had established WCW as the leader in the sports/entertainment category and is largely credited for re-inventing the professional wrestling genre. Eric also created the New World Order (nWo) brand for the TNT Network and was responsible for growing licensing, merchandising, pay-per-view, and live event business units by more than $325M. In 2002, he joined long time competitor Vince McMahon to be an on-air character on the highly successful USA Network Series “RAW”.
Eric Bischoff can be heard on his weekly podcast 83 Weeks with Eric Bischoff exclusively on Westwood OnePodcast Network. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Jessie Ventura accurately said politics is just like pro-wrestling...Dems and Repubs fight eachother in front of the cameras, but behind closed doors they are buddy buddy. Eric's point about news media "pretending" to be factual vs opinionated ended when the news media realized there was no money in informing the public on the "5 W's". Not to mention the social imlications, which makes it much easier to control the public by getting them to "feel" rather than "think". Great talk Eric!

FUnny, because these people basically worship heels. Look into their history, look into their culture, look into their behavior and private thoughts. They openly worship heels, and serve as golems to such, but clothe it in other terms.

I stopped reading books for video games :P Thanks for this video I'll definitely get back on track knowing this THINK vs FEEL pull

Bischoff is a genius. Gets his point out in such a great way. "The minute you get angry is the the minute you stop thinking."
He gives examples of US media outlets but it is so damn true about Indian news channels too.
Plus that "heel promo" in the beginning was an added bonus. 😋

As soon as I saw Eric Bischoff on the thumbnail I immediately clicked the video. I generally don't watch a lot of TED talks but I just watched this because of him. I've heard him talk on podcasts and he's a very street smart man, I dare say much smarter than many of the scientists/entrepreneurs who appear on TED talks and give very articulate presentations and talks.

"Nothing elicits a response quicker than anger." This was covered 10 years ago in a book called, "Trust Me, I'm Lying: Confessions of Internet Media Manipulator." News media has to compete with an internet audience, and the only way they can do that is through emotions.

He's absolutely right. The media manipulates its audiences because its audiences allow themselves to be manipulated. But the media also reduces context in order to convince its audiences about certain stories. CNN has lower ratings than TV Land. Apparently a lot of people decided that they didn't want to be manipulated anymore.

damn. haven't heard the name eric bischoff in a long time and he came back dropping facts. i noticed news media appealing to emotion more and more since the 2000s. It's a good way to keep people engaged without actually informing them of anything. the downside is you end up with a public who's blinded by rage and void of any fact or information. Politicians love it though. You couldn't produce an easier to manipulate crowd in a laboratory if you tried.

I wonder what Eric Bischoff would have said if someone started chanting "FIRE RUSSO!" during that heel promo at the beginning?
Would he have got legit upset or would he have cut back "You're damn right Vince Russo wrote this speech, he writes all my speeches!"
Also, I have often mused about what would happen if Jim Cornette ran for the Democrat nomination...
