The Hidden World Beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet | John Priscu | TEDxBozeman

  • Published on May 27, 2013
  • Following more than a decade of international and national planning and an intense week of on-ice weather delays, Priscu led the field team successfully drilled through the overlying ice sheet and sampled directly the waters and sediments of a lake hidden beneath the Antarctic ice sheet. The groundbreaking exploration of Antarctica's subglacial environment marks the beginning of a new era in polar science, opening the window for future interdisciplinary scientific investigations of one of Earth's last unexplored frontiers.

Your comment might've saved my sanity today. I was starting to wonder if I was the only one who feels like a kid on Christmas Eve when seeing science this exciting. What's with all the reality haters and NASA foes? Do people hate the idea of discovery unless it's purely fictional and follows a line of logic that most 1st graders would interpret as a fairy tale?

Is it mostly my (our, if you're a fellow countryman/woman) fellow Americans who are so vehemently against the process of thinking extrarectally, or do all countries currently suffer a certain amount of people who are content with the constant view of their own large intestines?
It's very sad.... Little can match the intensity of the fire that TRUE discovery starts, when it's set loose in a fertile mind. I was glad to smell the smoke still hanging from your comment. Thank you!

It's not a continent, it's the Antarctic Circle, it encircles our earth. There are old maps that prove it has not always been covered by ice.
The Antarctic treaty locks down this area so no exploration. It protects, not life, but ice and snow, why?
Real research has shown the ice is thicker, so this is bull!
God is in control, if he decides to open up this area by removing the ice, no one can stop him.
Human kind can then move forward and uncover what's past this area!
Just noticed your name, check out what Augustine Picard said when he went up in his balloon.

  • Ken Zeier

according to the web the average elevation on the Antarctica is 8200 feet assuming that’s above sea level. 98% of the Antarctica is covered by ice averaging 1 mile thick. That means that the average elevation of the bottom of the ice is about 3000 feet above sea level
Therefore the interior temperature of the earth must be keeping the water from freezing that’s under the ice
If all of the ice were to melt and drain into the ocean yes ocean levels would rise but that’s like saying if mount Everest fell over or whatever I mean is a block of ice one mile thick going to just suddenly melt when the average temperature year-round is below freezing -50F And we’re talking 1° of climate change warming maybe

Quite a leap from finding microbes on earth to finding it on a moon of another planet. Who cares? Spending in excess of a billion dollars to drill holes in search of microbes seems like we are funding his fantasy vacations. His exaggerations of “nobody slept for 3 weeks, we worked around the clock” and “ I worked two 23 hour shifts almost back to back” are laughable. Let me see, 2 days out of 21, hmm. So you found lakes and rivers under 2 miles of ice, what good will that do? Also, did you look to verify the cyclical patterns of climate change in these ice cores? Obviously not, since you say I am in denial for not believing you. It seems to me that you like to talk about yourself and your influence, I was the lead scientist, I worked closely with NASA, We have changed the way the world views Antarctica, etc. Perhaps you will live long enough to reach Europa....if so, you will not survive long enough to tell about it. But you got your fantasy trip of a lifetime, free! How exciting! Just cost the rest of the world over a billion bucks to pay for your voyages. How do you plan to take your equipment there? How will you get to the site from your landing site, since you will have to endure 2 weeks of travel in a tractor? How will you power the tractors, and what will it cost for that technology? A billion seems a rather light estimate once you figure in the costs of all this. I just shake my head in disbelief, and even if this comes to pass, it will take 20-30 years to study the data. So my question to you is Why bother? To save mankind from a 200’ rise in sea level? Here’s an idea, let’s drill a hole into your head to see if we can find anything inside!

Raphael Pimenta : even the weight of large bodies of water on a land mass changes topography...for instance, there is so much weight held back by 3 Gorges Damn in China, some fear a huge earthquake may be triggered by the stress. That’s why I stated, shifting of water and land mass is complicated. Some of the sea level changes are from lands sinking, rather than seas rising. No one would argue the the large captured ice of the ice ages lowered ocean levels, but that is talking massive amounts captured and held. Tectonic action is a very new science too...🤷🏼‍♀️

Okay, okay, stutter, stutter, okay. So sure that climate change is taking place yet won't say if it is a natural event or not. Let's look to the opposite end of earth, Greenland and it's over 2 and a half miles of sheet ice that keeps growing, a study was done not too long ago that took scientists 6 years to bore down and retrieve ice samples that allowed them to use a form of carbon dating that gave them yearly temperatures dating back 250,000 years. They put a chart of the data together that shows that there have been times on earth during the last 250,000 years where the climate was much hotter than it is right now and then there have been times when it has been much colder than it is right now but the one thing that it clearly shows is the amount of carbon in our atmosphere has been much higher than it is right now and that the correlation so called climatologists paid for by the Obama Administration are making between the industrial revolution and the temperature of the earth and climate change in a single relationship to the amount of carbon in our atmosphere is wrong. We are in what the chart shows as a time of almost constant temperature and have been for the last 12,500 years or so and that mankind has advanced during this period further than we have at any other time in our known history and that this constant temperature lent a hand in man ability to farm crops and make the advances that we have. The other thing that this data shows is that during the last 250,000 years there have been very drastic climate changes and some the took place in very short periods of time when we are looking at a window of 250,000 years. To go from an ice age to our current constant of 1 to 2 degree temperature swings in 5,000 years or less is dramatic. The earth is an ever evolving rock that we have yet to learn all of it's secrets, so when I hear people that claim to have it all figured out I tend to take their ranting with a grin because we don't really know if our industrial age has had any effect on the planets overall climate when your talking about a period of around 150 years and the Greenland Ice Bore Studies covers a period of 250,000 years so what could we garner more real data from a study that took 6 years to complete and has created a very detailed data chart of the earth's climate on a yearly basis going back 250,000 years or do we gain more insight from a study that uses pretty much daily temperatures for the last 150 years. The data collected by the scientists that conducted the Greenland Ice Bore Study gives us a rare look backwards in time but it also may show us that sudden swings of climate are more the norm for our planet and that we could very well be in a period of overall global warming that we have had nothing to do with at all or maybe we had a slight input in but when you see the swings our planet has made during this 250,000 year period I think it adds one thing we are in desperate need of in this discussion and that is perspective.

The ice is melting? NASA and NOAA both state the ice is increasing. Oh what a difference a couple of years and an election make.

It's not Increasing, it's thinning and spreading over a wider area, same amount of ice, just spreading out

@Steve King Still false a temporary snowfall increase fluctuation does not outweogh the overall trend or u do the previous ice melt loss.

@magiclion False. NASA itself said the ice in Antarctica is increasing.

Michael Alexander False. Sea ice and land ice are two very different things and Antarctica is huge. Overall the ice is melting.
