You mentioned African women having large discs in their lips as a fashion "trend" or for aesthetic purposes. I am entirely willing to accept a correction on the subject, as I have no evidence to substantiate my argument, but at one point I read that those discs were actually for the exact opposite purpose. According to my memory of something I read years ago (which means it must be true) they were meant to make the females as unattractive as possible to avoid the women being stolen by plunderers and rivals. Anyone know if that is complete hooey?

TBH I agree with most of your points regarding female armor, it's logical and make sense, and since you're such an expert at the subject, I want to ask a question to you.Have you ever seen a female fencing breastplate?, it's armor used by female in regular fencing matches underneath the usual layer of thick clothes(for those wondering, men wear a cloth called a plastron instead). Now from what your saying most female armor should probably not be shaped to be form-fitting, yet a female fencing breastplate is, why is it so?

  • Philip Longee

He never gets to the point. The reality is that men, trained to protect women, really don't want women on the battlefield. We sexualize female armor just to accommodate male desires but most mil-spec equipment weren't designed with women in mind. Even modern BDUs (Battle Dress Uniforms) are rather baggy and unflattering to either the male or female form. Any more form-fitting and it would just be restraining or distracting on the battlefield.
In movies or video games, they design the armor to be tight or oversized to accentuate the character's muscles, breasts, or bottom and to differentiate from other soldiers. How many movies do they show soldiers removing their helmet in battle? Something that is so vital to safety.
Women are usually shown frequently without shoulder armor because we find bare female shoulders attractive but they'd need just as much protection as males.

Bah! There need not be any "logic" behind "female armour" even in fantasy. Because the whole idea of bad-ass female knights is ludicrous to begin with even within the fantasy framework. Medieval combat required too much strength for there female warriors to be a thing, despite what some crazy feminists want us to believe .The prolific depiction in pop culture of female fighters is really just laughable nonsense when viewed seriously.

  • Vitor Rodrigues

I have a counter-argument for your reason why women didn't usually were sent to war.
I don't think men were favored over women on the battlefield simply because they are somewhat stronger on average (which is a very broad statement on itself, since strenght is a relative concept). I believe that the critical factor that determined that the mindset of "boys should protect girls" got rooted in human society is that men don't bear children.
In the past, women were usually more fed than men so that they could produce more children, since pregnancy relies heavily on the woman's health and diet. And since before the dawn of anti-biotics it was expensive as hell to maintain a perfectly healthy person, women tended to be more "costly" to raise than men. So it's logical to choose the "cheaper" one to send to a potentially life-threatening task, since the loss won't be the worst possible (and treating your sons and daughters as investments wasn't a far cry for how people in those times thought)
Also, most mammals evolved in a way that male individuals are disposable and replaceable and we humans came to experience that since the earliest tribal warfares. A woman can only be impregnated once at a time (even if the babies are twins or triplets), but a man can impregnate a
virtually infinite amount of women in little time. This means that with populational reduction, the worst case for population regrowth is that all deaths are of women and the best case scenario is that all deaths are of men.
I think those two factors had/have a much larger influence on how males and females were assigned in relation to battle and other perilous activities.

Another reason my latin teacher points out as for why women shouldn't fight: the survival of the land. If there is a hundred men and one woman who survived a war, this city-state or whatever would die out. If there's one man and a hundred women left, they'd have a chance of surviving. Women shouldn't go to war back then not only because men are stronger, but because if the women died, the whole land/city or place would die out. I don't know how much of a risk it is now because the general population of the world and a country has increased so drastically, and if it really came to a world war or something akin, we'll all probably die in nuclear bombings anyway...

My big problem with most female fantasy armor is that is seems like the design defeats the purpose. While I do not claim to be an expert, my understanding is that most armor is designed to deflect-or barring that absorb-blows. This isn't merely with personal armor. One principle in designing armor on tanks is to avoid creating _traps_ which are regions that direct or focus an impact into the vehicle. While I do not object to the moving of the general rounded bulge higher on the armor, although it may cause more blows to be deflected upwards than downwards, I dislike the design of much fantasy female armor because it creates traps that focus blows towards the sternum or the neck. That strikes me as bad for the survivability of the wearer. I hate the big, towering pauldrons for the same reason.

You missed a big point. Females did not armor up and fight because... rape. Knights were captured and ransomed all the time- heavy armor means its real hard to run away if you lose. In medieval times, rape was a thing. A captured female warrior = sex toy. Not a great thing you want to advertise on the battlefield. Not only from the enemy, but from the men in your own army- many of which did not hold lofty ideals of sanctity of women. It was just plain dangerous with or without armor.

Armor was very expensive, and medieval warfare was interelinked with feodalism. In that system, like almost all older societies women had less rigths than men. There are many reasons why women on the battlefield were rare, and their lesser social rank was certainly one of them.

I think there are /some/ valid points in the argument shad makes wherein that a societal norm where women exist in a combat force normally, would have some sort of emphasis armor BUT, the type would merely be ceremonial or parade, for show, & you can say "the greek muscle armor" if you want because that was worn for ceremony or by commanders who were extremely unlikely to enter the thick of fighting. But the way and form and evidence that is presented and hypothesis that are formed are created within a vacuum, that does not take into account the hyperseuxalized and original nature that "boob armor" was created in the first place. By men, for men to consumerize
Edit: And I am not attempting to attack shad or nothing but his expanse should be widened when taking a stance on the topic like he has, the form of arguments seemed to leave out crucial details that is detrimental to supporting the cause of titty plate

Also, it seems to me, that armor is also supposed to serve as a deterrent. Kind of like you hire a large guy as a bouncer because he's big and intimidating. So, too, you want your armor to have an intimidating appearance.

Men also were the ones to fight because we are expendable. If half the man of a tribe die, the amount of babies doesn't have to be affected much. A small amount of men could impregnate the women. The other way around doesn't work. If half of the females die you can't make the same amount of babies. A 20 year old female is not only often weaker then a 20 year old men but often way to valuable to risk dying in a fight.

One game i keep replaying, albeit heavily modded to enhance the experience, is Oblivion. Among my favourite armours in the game are the good old iron plate, legion plate, and ebony plate. But they have the problem of not looking right on females. in the case of iron and ebony, they're both very exposed around certain areas and look more like something for the bedroom than the battlefield. The legion plate is actually not bad, though its female model isn't very refined for the in-game female body.
So I like to install mods which convert the male armour mesh to the female frame. I don't typically use body mods like UFF or HGEC because the vanilla female body is actually pretty well designed. It's not overly sexualised, but still feminine enough to differentiate from the broader male body.
This means that my ebony cuirass is now formed of solid plates throughout, with deliberate attention in eliminating the boob armour and mail which covers the upper chest. now I have a proper breastplate and finally feel like I'm not a character who is into some really kinky stuff.

I was with you up until the “men are naturally more competitive” part. I not only completely disagree with that as a man, but it’s historically not the reason why the majority of soldiers were men. It was simply a patriarchal class system. Nobles at the top, male peasants below them, then female peasants. Women were seen as property (if you don’t believe me, look it up in the primary sources). They were seen as “soldier factories” in a way. The ones responsible for giving birth to more soldiers would rarely be put on the front lines. Additionally, males saw women as weak, because-from their point of view-women were subservient to men and thus could not do things a man could. These views are not-or at least should not-be held in the modern day. Today, most developed countries do not view women as property and do not encourage them to stick with traditionally “feminine” things. Just look at the number of female military troops, bodybuilders, powerlifters, and athletes. These women are not the exception. They have shown that many of the differences between men and women derive from what culture encourages

I've seen a harness of armor that was made for a women while looking up armor Jean of Arc could have worn, and so far the armor looked like a slim Gothic/Export Italian Gothic kit that didn't emphasize a female was in it. So far the armor was likely not hers but they practically confirmed it was for a female.
I also want to emphasize that even though armor for women might have the bulge for the stomach to crumple blows angled moved up to show femininity, usually women don't have d cups or bigger going into battle and so the fitting to them would show it. From what I've inferred indirectly from conversations I lurked over, men can't tell there's a women under a visor until they reveal themselves.
I also want to emphasize as said before that cod pieces were only for show and decoration. A man who researches heavily should knpw the correlation of field armor and dress armor and when it started failing and when the other one was becoming a fad.
Lastly, as former service, womens protective gear and uniforms are meant to look unisex. There is nothing in a plate that gives room for boobs.
