  • The speaker is Carl Oglesby. I was making my 6 part PBS television series, Making Sense of the Sixties and I picked to film the people I thought most powerfully articulated their experiences. Carl was one. Every comment he made could have been transcribed and written a book. Whether or not you agree with his point of view, he was brilliantly articulate at expressing it.

Fidel learned from Hitler and Stalin and thats why he made sure to castrate all of those who would try to take him down and since there was no food people would consentrate on trying to find food instread of trying to overthrow him. Fidel and the communist parasite regime of his turned Cuba into a third world shithole which is why people are still TODAY trying to escape even if it costs them their lives. Communism does and will never work all it ended up doing was turning countries like Venezuela today into third world shitholes, no free speech, no elections, no right to bear arms, you cant eat red meat because it all goes to the government and if you get caught you will get life in prison he who says thats false has never lived in Cuba or works for the government. 100+ million people ended up dying all over the world and yet its not taught in our schools and holliwierd who is pro communism does not make movies about it even though its something very important to learn about and should be mandatory to learn. All we ever talk about is Hitler even thought Mao Zedong and Stalin killed way more people than he did and we don't talk about it. Also check the Umap concentration camps in Cuba where Christians, gays, middle class people, kids, and anti revolutionaries were sent to be tortured and worked to death.

Frank Pais, José Antonio Echeverría, Camilo Cienfuegos are the true revolutionaries. The real war was fought in the inner cities not in the jungle.

Whether people agree or disagree with his views. This is an historical part of our history, and David had the insight to film it! I wasnt one who got into the whole Castro thing, I guess it just didnt intrest me too much. But I just remember everyone else talking about it at the time.

The Soviet Union sent missiles to Cuba as counter move to the US putting missiles in Turkey. The Cubans didn't have to accept them, but they did so because they owed the Soviet Union a lot, and because they saw the missiles as a deterrent to any US invasion. Cuba was no more in the wrong than Turkey, but it was certainly something seen as "playing the game" to the degree that the romantic visions of many young sympathizers were disillusioned, at least with regards to Cuba and Fidel.

Power corrupts, and absolute power does it best of all. Gosh! The brothers Castro must be ordained by God to rule Cuba, they have outlived everybody else. Why is it in all these 'worker's paradises', the 'El Jefe' must be a permanent fixture?

I agree 100% with the first 2 sentences of Kenneth Lucas. He expressed it very well. I am not versed in his other "KICKER" information, so I cannot offer any opinion there. The only similarity between the American colonies rebelling against England's rule and Castro rebelling against Batista is that word 'rebel', and that is all. What our Founding Fathers had in mind and what they instituted and put into place after the colonies won their independence from England was nothing like what Castro did after he became the ruler. There is NO similarity at all. Yes, young people are usually full of idealistic and romantic notions of all kinds, and that's okay; that is part of being young.

+WingDing Dmetrius Wow, I am honored and humbled by your statement. Thank you. This balances out another poster on another subject who would not engage me on the facts that I presented, but just kept attacking me personally and calling me a hypocrite and who didn't like the way I punctuated some of my sentences. But as I told him, that's okay by me because I am thankful that our founding fathers gave us the Bill of Rights which affirmed our God given and inalienable right in the 1st Amendment, of freedom of speech, along with a few more enumerated freedoms in the 1st amendment.

+WingDing Dmetrius I will have to disagree with your statement that..." the founding fathers gave us a system that dictates profit over people..." This is just wrong. The Constitution, and in particular the Bill of Rights, is all about protecting people, enabling people to be free and self determining people, to give people the environment to take control of their own lives and make of it what they will; for better or worse. The Constitution is NOT about making money. The Bill of rights is NOT about making money. Have people abused the system ? For sure, but that is the person's choice and not something that was forced upon them by the founding fathers or by the Constitution, and most certainly not by the Bill of Rights.

People will never understand what its like living in a communist third world shithole like Cuba. People today know nothing about communism and how it takes all your rights and how people TODAY are still trying to escape it even if it costs them their lives. Yet liberals think Cuba is a paradise, they should all move there so they can really experience it, the Venezuelans thought communism was wonderful now they're paying the price with their lives.

Romanticism is inherently built in revolutions. Anytime you have a rag-tag group of rebels fight the establishment and it's powerful military and then BEAT them, that in itself is very inspiring.
KICKER: Black Cubans loved the revolution because of Batista's great hatred of blacks and de jure racism. White Cubans looked upon him as Satan. I could elaborate more but just let that sink in.
