It was a compelling story, but the mother and son characters are totally not sympathetic or likeable, by the end as a viewer I really didn’t care what happened to the son or the mother.

So I'm an addict and this movie fucking hits home. I could barely finish it. I was honestly waiting for them to get something wrong about being an addict and they just fucking nailed it. I get there are different situations for ppl but addicts all think alike and it's like I could read every emotion he went through before it was obvious.

Harry Potter agreed it’s all real till the end the end can end like this for people but mostly it dose not so I really wish the end was real like the rest.

I love them both so much! Amazing actors and an underrated film, far superior than Beautiful Boy and more deserving of the buzz

Lucas reminds me of liam james, the acting is similar, the way they talk, mannerisms
He has a short screentime in his first three movies but you will definitely feel his presence

I always loved Julia- brilliant actress. She always showed her intelligence, humor and eloquence on these types of talk shows. She never ever disappoints !
Many actresses cant express like she does when on these talk shows.
My daughter was addicted to heroine -
The small clip I saw was very touching/ to say the least.

And if you'd read about the movie, Peter didn't want his son to act for this role-- he'd come with a list of other actors and Julia fought for Lucas bc SHE wanted him to play her son.

Male actors are such phonies. Lucas is playing a gay character and during the PR he portrays himself as basically queer and his sexuality as existing across a spectrum and now that that is over he makes it known he has a girlfriend. Such phony BS.

    • Ash P
      Ash P 5 months ago +3

This is such an idiotic comment. Lucas still identifies as fluid and very much a part of the LGBTQ community. How does him having a gf change that-? You're confused.

‘Manchester by the sea’ was a bore of a film but he was magnificent in ‘boy erased’. ETA: i forgot he was in ‘3 billboards’ and ‘ladybird’. He picks mostly HORRIBLE projects.

James Lacovitch i never said I was in the majority. I know I’m in the minority. If it’s critically acclaimed, it usually means it sucks.

    • James Lacovitch
      James Lacovitch 6 months ago

To be fair Natalie, I think it’s clear you’re the minority in this debate. The projects he’s in have a better budget to box office ratio as the big pictures you mentioned. As well as his projects being nearly rated 100% on rotten tomatoes. You’re probably the only person thinking he’s in bad projects :)

Simon Boccanegra the opening scene in the car is what made me turn it off. If my kid did that, her ass would be whooped until Sunday.

    • klausweasley
      klausweasley 6 months ago +1

@Simon Boccanegra One of the things I loved about the script is that even though the film is ONLY 90 minutes long, EVERY SUPPORTING CHARACTER are so fleshed out and beautifully written, it seems like they could star in their own movie and they're passing through Lady Bird's movie.

    • Simon Boccanegra
Simon Boccanegra 6 months ago +1

I liked the way the first scene with Lady Bird and her mother, in the car, sets a template for their relationship. They can be so deeply in sync one minute (the audio book of The Grapes of Wrath), and then arguing over something stupid the next. Or vice versa (stopping their squabble because they both see the perfect dress for LB). It's very fluid. In general, this was one of those movies that I liked while it was going on, but then loved when I thought back on it, for the care with which even the smallest characters are observed. Sister Sarah Joan: "Don't you think maybe they are the same thing? Love and attention?"
Most of my favorite teenage protagonists *are* dislikable sometimes.
Lady Bird has her winning moments, though, when you know she's ultimately going to turn out okay. One of them is the scene behind the coffee shop with Lucas Hedges's character, just to bring it back around to him.

Lucas Hedges has had quite an array of "moms" in the last few years: Gretchen Mol, Frances McDormand, Nicole Kidman, Joan Allen (on the stage), Julia Roberts. Someone who's planning another mother/son film should add Reese Witherspoon to his collection of '90s goddesses. Their faces match up well.

Saw this at a film festival early November and man what a powerful film! Julia Roberts best performance in a while! If competition wasn't as strong I'd say she deserves a nomination because she's that good. Had me in tears! Saddest Christmas movie possibly ever! A film we need right now! It's more than a film about Opioid addiction but also a story about a love of a mother and what lengths a mom will go to for her son. Everyone go see this as soon as it gets near you!

Lucas is on a streak, I'm starting to be truly impressed by him. He's getting deeper and deeper every single day and I am definetly going to follow his path like I have ever since I saw the first shot of him in Manchester By The Sea. Julia seems to really overact this one.
