Kobe Bryant and the top 3 baseline dunks in NBA history | The Jump

  • Published on Jan 11, 2019
  • Rachel Nichols, Amin Elhassan and Scottie Pippen of The Jump play "Make/Miss," taking a look at Sacramento Kings point guard De'Aaron Fox's many blocks; a couple of impressive Marcus Smart moments in Celtics vs. Heat; James Johnson posterizing Kyrie Irving; Nikola Jokic and LaMarcus Aldridge passing to themselves off the backboard in Nuggets vs. Clippers and Spurs vs. Thunder, respectively; and a DeMar DeRozan baseline dunk from San Antonio vs. OKC. They then take a look at the three best baseline dunks ever (2:43), including JR Smith in Knicks vs. Heat 2012 (a moment that included LeBron James), Vince Carter blowing by Chris Mullin in Raptors vs. Pacers 1999, and Kobe Bryant putting both Rasho Nesterovic and Kevin Garnett on a poster in Lakers vs. Wolves 2003.

What about MJ's dunk on Patrick Ewing at the Garden? He drove baseline, faked the crap out of both Charles Oakley and John Starks when he started turning the other way, then spun back towards the baseline, and absolutely posterized Ewing. That definitely deserves to be there...and I'm saying this as a lifelong, diehard Knicks fan.

Kobe had style to his dunks but he wasn't quite as athletic as guys like MJ or VC. They could get up a few more inches and stay there a bit longer, especially MJ. VC was probably MJ and Kobe mixed in terms of how far he got up & stayed in the air and the creativity he brought to his dunks. MJ wasn't the most creative dunker he just wanted two points lol and on to the next.
