  • I didn't mention it in the video, but I think The Shape of Water looks pretty neat! I really wish the trailer was less spoilery though. I feel like I already watched the whole movie. Especially after editing it with this video. So that's a bummer. But hopefully I'll forget all that before seeing the movie!

The more times I watch the trailer, the more I legit think they're Abe's parents. Abe was supposedly found in an abandoned facility. This looks to be set around the 1950s-ish, and given that Hellboy was an infant not much sooner, and being in his 60s in 'Hellboy', the timeline fits. The trailer shows Eliza manipulating droplets of water - this could be inherent or a learned trait, either way her being mute and sensitive to beings and matter alludes to her having psychic ability. Behaviorally, she's every bit as awkward and empathetic as Abe.
I don't think Del Toro would ever unintentionally make the creature resemble Abraham. His material is always so varied and imaginative, the resemblance has to be for a reason. He is more alien, much more decoratively patterned, but his shape and proportion of features are much the same as Abe's. I think everyone is safe in assuming that Abraham is a 'more human' version of this creature, because he's half n' half.

Doesn’t matter if it’s not his parents. It’s still connected. Not Abe Sapien per se but at least it’s connected to its species lol. They don’t have to necessary be blood related. Just that Abe from Hellboy is the most evolved one in the modern world so it happens to be in favour more with rotten eggs lmao

I swear I remember back in the day that Del Toro tried and failed to get the rights to a movie like this but failed because of the idea. So he went ahead and made his own movie without the license. Del Toro denies any connection because he has to for legal purposes. He proved though that he could make this movie and with the awards. Damn he really proved it.

I thought Abe was a human scientist that was turned into "fish-man" after an occult ritual. Plus, he can still talk. I mean, it'd be cool if it was connected, but I don't see how the timelines connect. Either way, both creatures were well designed.

You guys saying that it's Abe's parents, it's not.
You'll have to forgive me for my laziness of researching exacts, but when he's in his tank playing with his Rubik's cube, he mentions a time length of playing with it an only getting two sides done in that time period. Which dated back to quite a bit before this even.
And the comics say a lengthy age as well.
It's fun to dream though (:
I hope he continues along in his beautiful little universe, love Del Toro.

Nope, here is Abe's origin: he was once a human man who was experimenting on a strange egg on behalf of an occult secret society during the *American Civil War*. He had a spiritual encounter with the egg and started transforming, the secret society sealed him away on the day of Lincoln's assassination, he was rediscovered in the 70s by the B.P.R.D. Notice any time issues between Abe's origin and the Shape of Water?

If I recall, Professor Broom explained to Myers that Abe was found in a fish tank in a secret room in some hospital the same year Abraham Lincoln was killed April 5, 1865. So, unless they are rewriting the first two Hellboy movies time line. Chances are it's not the same Abe Sapien character. Who knows, perhaps there is more than one "fishman" and a whole species of them and this character is opening the door to a yet undiscovered spices with a government attempts to cover it up and stifle it type conspiracy.
I enjoyed both Hellboy movies (and own them) and am looking forward to the 3rd installment. This movie too I will watch as it also look interesting. Connection to Hellboy or not, I'll still watch it.

Yeah, I really don't think that The Shape of Water is connected to Abe Sapien what's so ever. It's just Del Toro's version of The Creature from the Black Lagoon, with a Beauty and the Beast vibe to it. I've seen both Hellboy movies and I agree that they are both okay, and I have wondered about Abe's backstory. But I just don't think The Shape of Water is his back story. But I do like Abe Sapien, so I do hope that his past will be presented. And I'm really looking forward to see this film when it comes to theatres, and that it will do well in the box office.

1:17 "there is no way the studio would let them get away with that. These type of projects thrive on marketing".
But there is a two movie trend that has done exactly what you say the studios wouldn't allow. One with an inarguabley much bigger franchise. You're forgetting that when Prometheus came out. The studio and film makers were denying that it had anything to do with Alien. Even flat out denying that it was a prequel. Even closer to this situation is what happened to the movie Split. It definitely was a stealth prequel to unbreakable that the studio allowed.
I see it as just a new form of marketing. I think the possibility itself that this could be a stealth preqeul to Hellboy has caused more hype and discussion than if it had been outright advertised as a prequel to Hellboy. In fact. If it was marketed that way. People might be upset that this is how they are introducing the Hellboy reboot. But doing it this way avoids that and actually has people excited over the mere possibility. Im positive it is related to Hellboy. Way too many connections that would open Del Toro to a lawsuit for not being legally distinct enough. If he didnt have permission. I doubt he would do unnecessary things like making his favorite snack be boiled eggs to name but one. We also know (thanks to Spiderman) that it is not unheard of for studios to make deals over character rights. Maybe they allowed this movie to open up the reboot, while they get the rights to the reboot itself.

  • Gay Nutbuster
    Gay Nutbuster 11 месяцев назад

Yeah, haha, not connected at all. Guillermo said in an interview that he liked the movie Creature From The Black Lagoon as a six-year old, he wanted the creature to be with the human girl. I think he does not intend to connect it to Hellboy, he was simply inspired by CFTBL.

Sean Prine- Not true at all. Alien is a franchise that would bring in alot of money if something was marketed as a prequel (same goes for unbreakable to an extent). Yet, despite this fact. The movie Prometheus was NOT marketed whatsoever as an alien prequel. In fact, they kept flat out denying it had anything to do with alien at all up until the movies release. But as we all know. It in fact was a prequel. Same thing happened with the movie split. The fact that it was an unbreakable preqeul was a surprise. I think it's just a new type of marketing technique. It's a new trend that they might be taking advantage of. Look at how much more attention this film is getting because of this rumor. This probably creates more hype in a waym than flat out saying it's a prequel would have.
As for OP's assertion that they legally cant. I havent looked up who owns what. But we know from spiderman that studios can easily make deals concerning character rights. And I think that makes more sense. Because they are using far too much aspects of the Abe character that is unnecessary and would open them up to a lawsuit if they didnt have permission. There are HUGE connections to abe that they would change to make him legally distinct from the Hellboy character. The fact they didnt at all is a huge sign.

How am I disparaging the movie in any way? I'm just pointing out the specifically similar character traits from two of the characters he's created

What if this is the story of Abe's parents??

    • Malcom Alexander
      Malcom Alexander 25 дней назад

Wow you just don't care do you, here is Abe's origin: around the time of the American Civil War a secret society found an egg, Langdon Everette Caul experimented with the egg, had a spiritual experience, started transforming, and then the secret society sealed him away marking his tube with the date of the transformation's start, the date of Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Sometime in the 70s he got found by the B.P.R.D, and eventually the now named Abe became an agent.

It seems like a homage to Abe Sapien. GD no longer is connected with the franchise that created Abe so this is a very close version of him. I love sensitive stories like this set in the past. I connect the amphibian to people who were subjected to segregation. Looking different yet inherently the same or even more sophisticated than the oppressor.

Given that Abe was born before Sally Hawins' character's parents were even born, that would require a lot of mental gymnastics.

so many people unaware of h.p. lovecraft works everyone keeps saying it's abe sapien but all those people are unaware & i highly doubt it's secretly abe sapien & abe sapien was most likely inspired by h.p. lovecraft.

This is so close to the comics origin it's painful. Short of him being found originally in a condemned hospital. I mean, the way he's treated even is line with the trauma Abe felt before waking!

Yeah, thought it was similar to Abe Sapien at first but because he had no rights anymore with the franchise. I thought it could be inspired by the Creature of the black Lagoon or perhaps it's his own twist with H.P. Lovecrafts Shadow over Innsmouth.

it is possible he got pulled back in but it has been kept secret....... that often happens admitably. because they are strangely paranoid.
however in this case it could be done for effect. abe sapien origin story, leads to hellboy reboot.

What with the bathtub full of what appear to be fish eggs, I think it's entirely plausible that it's at least partially inspired by the horror over innsmouth. And it always brings me great joy to watch things that would make H.P. Lovecraft have a fit
