I've been watching laptop reviews for WEEKS, trying to decide on my next machine. This is hands down one of the best (for me) reviews I've watched. Clear, concise and truly helpful, using plain language that I can understand. I'm not techy, but I use a laptop every day for work. If I have an issue I can just call IT and, tadaaaa, it's fixed. When it comes to buying my own personal machine for home use, a whole new sphere of understanding my real needs and requirements comes into play. Thanks so much for this...I'm definitely leaning towards the Dell XPS 15, but now I understand why. And that's huge.

    • James Trello
      James Trello 8 days ago

@Koltin Driver Also, just limiting your internet usage is a terrible argument to have Windows. Every single time you connect to the internet, you're being spied upon by Windows. Just because you only use the internet for a small time, does not fix anything, you're still being spied upon. Is privacy really on your priority list, if you're willing to give it up for Windows?

    • James Trello
      James Trello 8 days ago

@Koltin Driver You can use GIMP instead of Photoshop, or you could use Windows temporarily in a virtual machine, once again there's no reason to use Windows as your main OS.

    • Koltin Driver
      Koltin Driver 8 days ago

James Trello oh and I need windows to use the programs like photoshop

    • James Trello
      James Trello 9 days ago

@Koltin Driver There is no reason to choose Windows to use on a privacy focused laptop, since you're completely defeating the point of the laptop being privacy focused...

  • kasa
    kasa 11 days ago

I think mechanical switch for mic and webcam should be mandatory. Most people use those so little anyway so it's just waste to keep them on, on top of being invasive. Unless you use windows hello. Wireless switch is also cool, but because laptops are almost always connected to some wifi I don't think it's much of a issue. Switch that automatically kills wireless when you fold the laptop on other hand would be nice feature.

PS: The US government can easily compel hardware and software manufacturers to provide back doors, encryption ciphers, passwords, locations, and biometric data though FISA courts with literally no oversight or recompense, often without even having to notify the companies of their intent before they've secured a court order. They've done this successfully on many occasions, although it's worth pointing out that they generally don't even have to do that much: google, facebook, twitter, various ISPs, and apple are, generally speaking, pleased as punch to help 'law enforcement' out in any way they can.
In summary, if Snowden really recommended this, he's an idiot. Don't buy this stupid shit.

    • James Trello
      James Trello 17 days ago

@Sinh Nguyen For software, change it, it's Linux, you can do that. For hardware, the only two problems that I can think of is the IntelME and then just generally older and slower hardware. Purism claims that the IntelME is "neutered and disabled", though using me_cleaner, FPFs, and HAP. Now if this actually does disable the IntelME, I don't fully know, AFAIK, it can't be fully turned off, however the code that is on it, does not contain the backdoor.

kind of want that kill switch on modern laptops or computer cases

  • Laurens Hoogenboom
    Laurens Hoogenboom 21 day ago

Please stop reviewing things you don't know anything about.
If you want to spec this thing out it costs you 3305 bucks...
Just spend 5 bucks to buy a nice sliding webcam cover, install any Linux distro, encrypt your drive. And choose a nice desktop environment or window manager.
If you want to keep it easy, youy should install Ubuntu, it also ships with GNOME DE. If you want any other distro or DE you know enough about this not to need my advise.
I just saved you 3000 dollars. Just reuse the laptop you have. If it was powerful enough yesterday it will be too tomorrow.

    • James Trello
      James Trello 21 day ago

Just reusing your laptop will most likely not net you the same privacy/security as using this laptop (or other privacy laptops). And if you want to save money, then just buy a pre-2008 librebooted thinkpad, it's around $50-150.

    • James Trello
      James Trello 21 day ago

If your laptop was made post-2008 and it contains an Intel CPU, then your laptop is vulnerable to the IntelME backdoor. If it contains an AMD CPU and is post-2013, then you might be vulnerable to the AMD PSP potential backdoor.

They have claimed to "Neuter and Disable" the IntelME by using ME_Cleaner and then by using "FPFs" and then the through the “High Assurance Platform”. They have claimed that all of this will disable the IntelME.

    Button for Bluetooth and wifi...
You mean airplane mode? My laptop has that and it's 5 years old.

    • James Trello
James Trello 25 days ago +1

It's not just turning on airplane mode, it's also physically disconnecting the power to the wifi/bluetooth and the mic/camera chip. Also, just because airplane mode is on, does not mean that the chip is fully off, you need to have these type of switches if you want to actually have them off.
