Wow Tamara, your friends story made me cry! I went through the same and lost my twins at 5 months pregnant because of neglect. I was not able to get a lawyer they said the time and money would not be worth picking up the case.
I'm disabled and had severe chest pain. I was made to wait 6 hours in emergency. Doctors don't listen, especially to disabled and chronically ill people - we know ourselves best... :(
This brings tears to my eyes , and pain to my heart honestly . Knowing that as a black woman we have to have booklets , and notes on how to get proper care places that are designed to save lives . 💔 this world is really messed up man . BLACK LIVES MATTER!
one of the very reasons why i wanna be a nurse...i gotta help my fellow black women
Both of those stories are so tragic. I know in Western Canada we have "free" healthcare, but with that wait times are ridiculously long. For us it is a matter of there simply isn't enough hospitals/doctors/nurses to assist with all the high influx of patients that come in. They also do assessments and take people based on the ones that are higher priority (heart attack, stroke, etc.) prior to others (broken bone, anxiety/panic attack, headache, etc.). I remember waiting 4-5hrs in waiting room and 2 more hours in room with my bf for him to be seen by assistant/doctor, he had shortness of breath/couldn't breath and other things (not panic attack/anxiety related) and wasn't taken seriously. When he was seen a few tests were done, and we were sent home without any answers. Unfortunately, the resources aren't there, we need more doctors/nurses in Western Canada.
I was telling my brother in law about this! He was absolutely flabbergasted that black women have a higher mortality and infant mortality rate. He asked the same question that A asked. This also is very common with women in general with male doctors. Women used to be the only people that would deliver babies for other women until men came in and decided they new better. I’m not a man hater by any means but when I have kids I want a female doctor for that reason. Also, as men and as white people if you see people being mistreated in this situation or any situation SPEAK UP! We have a responsibility too!
The dr and nurses need to permanently lose their license and never be in a job where they care for anyone
They educate me more and more about different topics. Like I had no idea it was a proven fact that black women are at a higher risk of complications than white women.
Its really sad that SOME take the oath to treat n care for patients but end up doing the exact opposite.. Ya'll should put up the names of these hospitals n if possible the doctors involved... Cz i feel like even if their licenses get suspended... It wont be equal to the pain of loosing a loved one. 💯💯 Shout out to the doctors n nurses who have their patients interests at heart
I’m literally in tears because I’ve lost 2 women in my family the past years because of a medical error and I didn’t fully understand why it was so prevalent for us black women
I was pregnant at 37 weeks and complained that my baby's wasnt moving as much and when I went to my appt they said the baby heartbeat was fine and three days later I went for my check up and there was no heartbeat and I delivered a stillborn. No one took me seriously about my concerns and therefore I lost my son. I will never make that mistake again
“You know your body so speak on your body” I love that ❤️
Yup! A lot of doctors and nurses could care less about their patients! It’s rare that I see themREALLY CARING! I’ve seen it many times and been through it. Shouldn’t be just about the money which in most cases it is to them. We have to be Knowledgeable not trust the medical field so much anymore.
This made me cry
Such sad stories 😞
Wow this is so true great points.
I actually had my third c section, in Washington DC 1 year ago. After having my son everything was fine for the first 4 hours. Well I began feeling really weak, seeing spots, blacking out back and forth. My mother and my husband knew I was hemorrhaging. The nurse didn’t believe them. They thought I just needed an IV. Then eventually I went into shock and they did a scan to see I had an abdomen full of blood. Well after putting me under and rushing me into surgery, they sucked out the blood and gave me a transfusion. Unfortunately they still couldn’t find out why It happened and I was in ICU for 24 hours but FORTUNATELY God saw fit for me to still be here and here I am. My son if healthy and beautiful. I am very sorry for those of you who have lost a loved one due to doctor negligence! We must stay strong for each other ! I love watching this show .
Its not just black women ive seen this happen to all raices and its really sad..and this has happened to me.
Black people are at risk for certain health problems and birth problems not because black people’s genetics because black people in other countries don’t have this health problems it’s specifically the US literally because of racism cause a huge amount of stress of black people which is a leading cause of health problems and like they said black women aren’t taken seriously it’s sad really
Y'all killing this topic 💪 Good job!!!
Its important to also consider and discuss the lack of diversity in the medical field and the history of people of color in medicine. Lots of these cycles are perpetuated especially in medicine because of bias.
I love the Real!!!!
I’m sorry, but I don’t know if this is a Race problem. ( I’m white) I think it’s all about what hospital in what areas you go to... my grandma was diagnosed with type three liver disease on top of her lung problems. Her liver is having problems and her belly is as big as a nine month pregnant woman (I’m 7 months pregnant and she’s bigger than me!!) the doctors scheduled her stomach to be drained in 2 and a half weeks... and they won’t take her sooner. On top of that the medications she is taking aren’t working and they are telling her they will review it when she next comes in for the drain... it happens a lot. Especially since my aunt got diagnosed with breast cancer and they said in three months they will do radiation.. it’s just unacceptable and a lot of hospitals just seem to not care or have too much on their schedules TO care. This is why I’m having my baby with a midwife at HOME, I hate hospitals and you never know what you’re gonna get
Waited in an ER to support my friend and she waited for like 3+ hours. It was horrible.
This is the best show on Earth! I love the producers. I would love to work on this shows production!
More conversation like this because the audiences is getting older and they are getting older and for the young ones who need to hear this and not wait until we are too old and sitting here like why wasn't I told this years ago...may start watching again...
I made a doctors appointment and was still treated like trash...didn't know this at the time because I was so little...but I could've had something seriously wrong with me because of what I thought I found...who knows because I was never seen by a doctor so and I just left...but I was told so we have more patient in here besides you...and I was wating for like four hours...was never seen by a doctor but they rushed to have me sign a paper so they wouldn't be responsiable if something happened to me...luckily whatever it went away and didn't come back...
Um hold up Adrienne statement at 3:04 was stupid. It was about black women and diseases. If heart disease is a over all womand issue. HIV/AIDS and other sexual transmitted disease do not cause death while birthing a child. Second this is about the treatment of black women while they are in the care of health care professionals. This has been a long standing issue with Black women heart disease and child birth and the standard of treatment. I shouldn't have to act a fool to obtain proper care ! Its my human right!
I understand (from observing my Sister) the Pain of losing a Baby...but Why can't the issue be about the Negligence of the Medical Person (who is supposed to be an Expert or at least with the Knowledge Know-How on issues such as hers)......and not be about because She was a Black Woman?!?!And how come....the Hosts are Not discussing Why the Patient left without at least causing a big scene. So what they would have thought of her less???!!!............who knows.....maybe that would have saved her life and helped her Baby....
This is so sad that we have to be given a list of how to approach a doctor.... someone you are paying. Someone who is trained to serve. Only in America with the amount of technology that we have are we still experiencing such high death rates related to pregnancy. This is NOT happening in other countries.
The real has gotten so good since they put Amanda on
Wow Tams story was heartbreaking so sad to hear
Man I wish I could some on this show and tell them the crap I went through with my breast tumors and thyroid issue and etc that they brushed off
There is also patient advocates! Please ask to speak with one and file a complaint. Especially while in the hospital!
Its just annoying bc 22 years ago my mother was in labor with me. She kept saying she didnt feel right she had 4 kids b4 me. She literally said repeatedly she didnt feel well. So they sent her home. Once her watrr broke she came back and passed away. She had a brain aneurism but I feel it was the hospital responsible for her death for not taking her symptoms and complaints serious
Ugggh omg tameras story hurts my heart so bad
So sorry for T's friend.
man... a couple days ago I had really bad chest pain but I chose not to go to the hospital even though I thought about it and cried but I decided to wait it out and thank God it went away... but this topic scares me because I literally could’ve died in my home if it was something else. (still don’t know what caused it though)
Well, that's because the health care system is racist AF, duh!
I was denied a room. I was given meds for high blood pressure after going to the ER. Took it the next day face blew up. I looked like a basketball with big lips. I sat in the hall. People all in my face. Denied a room. Long story short. The white man behind me in the hall. A drunk. Fell down and got a boo boo on his face. He got a room just like that when he asked. Its true. The color of your skin determines it all. I could of died.
This is such a horrible situation. I live in South Africa and our puplic Healthcare is really bad. Basically if you don't have medical aid you're screwed.... And unfortunately because of our country's past most of those people are black people. The lady who cleans our house lost her 5 month old baby 2 years ago after taking her to the hospital with diarrhea and vomiting. She was sent home with medication... Baby wasn't even put on a drip to rehidrate her. Momma stayed up all night with her baby but fell asleep for a few minutes... When she woke up her baby was dead. I'm still so angry at the whole situation and the fact that the hospital could have saved that little girl but didn't.
This is heartbreaking and it makes me so mad that we have to deal with this! I told my mom that I was scared to give birth in a hospital because of how black women are mistreated. I'm praying for the safe delivery of my child in a birth center instead.
This is sad and absolutely heartbreaking. I dealt with this with my mom and it's a good thing I was there because I let them know very firmly but professionally that she wouldn't be ignored NOR talked down too like she doesn't know her body. They are ALL PRACTICING physicians which in the title alone tell you they don't KNOW everything and no one knows your body like you, period!
You guys say raise hell and make noise but they will take your ass to jail and you will die there so there is no way around this really I think.
This may be true Except all my life i have had issues with Doctors...More female doctors have been Rude ,period...For instance my 2nd child and i never received treatment for RH Factor ..I had to rely on Jesus, period ..The woman Doctor was Awful ..I didn't have the means to go out of town at that time ..My son got Stuck in my birth canal for a half an hour ..He was early. .Years later a Different doctor asked me and others about our Experiences with her....Because after my 2 nd child was born .She lost a neighbors baby upon delivery ...Because of our taped conversations she lost her license...I can only imagine what it's like for people of color...If doctors can treat me with discrimination i am sure they do worse with women and children who are of color! It all needs to stop because it is wrong, period! My granddaughter is a beautiful ebony color and so smart! She has alot of medical issues...So far doctors have been ok However she's 4 will it continue when she is older? And not under her mom's and my sons protection? Or will it progress into discrimination as she is older? We live in a small town and so far she is loved by all who meet her...Thankfully...idk..I just don't want anyone to Ever hurt her because she has already been through enough! Stay safe everyone
They knew that baby was in Distress and instead of admitting they were wrong...they let that baby die...Damn shame.
They also let men and women with headaches die too, so sad.
It's not just a race thing. God forbid you go to the doctor if you're overweight. Oh hell no. Doesn't matter why you're overweight, doesn't matter if you've already lost weight and in the process of losing more, all they see is a fat slob who's eating themselves to death and they act like we deserve whatever is wrong. I've gone to the ER with full blown pneumonia, sat in the ER waiting room for 7 hours, then waited in a room for an hour before ever being seen. I was half dead by then and all they talked about was my diet.
This is terribly sad. When I worked at the hospital. We always took any patient immediately in if having chest pains. Even the doctor's office I worked at which was a urgent care facility. We also took a chest pain patient back ahead of anyone. I'm terribly Sorry to hear about the loss of your sisters child. I hope she wins het lawsuit.
@Tina Dickerson I hope so too.
@Nellie K. Adaba that's heartbreaking. I can't even imagine that. I hope she sued them.
It happened a Latina woman I knew who lost her baby, her baby was dead inside of her, I think it was a fetus.
Please... don’t listen to Loni on this one. Do not raise hell, they’ll grab a security officer and kick you out in .5 seconds. If you really need help. Try your best to stay calm. If your nurse isn’t helping. Ask for the charge nurse. And keep going up the chain. ASK THEM TO EXPLAIN IN FULL what’s going on and why. Make them talk to you. Anger or hostility won’t help. They’ll just disregard you & move on.
ALWAYS ask for the administrator if you feel you’re being neglected in ANY form! They scramble their asses off when u say the A word!
Unless you are a frequent flier coming to the ER FOR A HANGNAIL AND YOUR STOMACH HURTS CUZ U JUST ATE AN ENTIRE PIZZA AND BOX OF COOKIES AND 3 LARGE SODAS AND A HOTLINK YEAH IF U CONTINUALLY COME TO THE E.R. HYPOCHONDRIAC FREQUENT FLIER THEY KNOW U ON A FIRST NAME BASIS..THEN I CAN SEE GIVING YOU THE THERE THERE YOU ARE OKAY NOW GO ON HOME BABY ITS OKAY...BUT IF YOU GOT A BABY ON BOARD SCREW WHATEVER ABUSE THE MOTHER HAS DONE TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM SERVICES YOUR PRIORITY IS THE INNOCENT BABY AND I FIND THIS STORY NOT ONLY SHOCKING BUT SUSPICIOUS THAT NORMAL BASIC PROTOCOL WASNT FOLLOWED IT ISNT NEW PROTOCOL IT ISNT A SECRET AND THERE IS A CHECKLIST OF STEPS ALWAYS DONE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN 1 MONTH ALONG TO FULL TERM THEY ARE ALL TREATED PER THE LAWS THAT PROTECT THE UNBORN BABY AND MOTHER....I MEAN A SERIES IN THE CHAIN OF COMMAND A NUMBER IF PEOPLE WOULD HAVE BEEN REQUIRED TO SIGN OFF ON TESTS PERFORMED RESULTS INDICATED AND REGARDLESS IF TRIAGE WOULD HAVE REQUIRED L&D TO SIGN THEIR LIST OF PROTOCOL TESTS TO DIAGNOSE AND DISCHARGE TREAT AND BY LAW NOTIFICATION OF PATIENTS OBSTETRICIAN BEFORE ALLOWING YOUR PT TO LEAVE HER PHYSICIAN MUST ADVISE ON TREATMENT..ADMISSION OR DISCHARGE...AND NO TESTS PERFORMED NUH NO OBTETRICIAN WOULD HAVE SAID OH FAINT HEARTBEAT THATS ALL THE TESTS RUN OKAY COOL SHE CAN LEAVE.. NO STRIP DONE NO pH NO CBC NO ULTR DIAG AFM AMNIOTIC FLUID MARGIN NOTHING COOL LET HER GO...NOPE.
This topic is very interesting and i think healthcare definitely needs to step up to patient care initiatives not only for one race tho. Most postpartum death rates are due to insufficient prenatal care, which causes things to go missed and complications erupt. I am a new graduate nurse, and everything they tell us in school is to treat the problem and take the patient at their word for what they are experiencing. It is sad because you don't want people to think of healthcare in this way and it become litigious, but I don't see hospitals changing their model of putting efficacy and money first. When hospitals do that they throw nurses and physician into a whirlwind of fatigue and burnout and we lose the drive to make a difference and think critically because we are overworked and expected to be perfect. Loss for everyone involved.
Loni has resting ugly face.. hahahahDamn goblin
Went in to get an X-ray because i fell down the stairs and wasn’t able to walk properly for a week Tell me why this women says I don’t think an X-ray is necessary I don’t see you in any agony, rest your foot and you should be fine Bitchhhh just cause I’m not crying cause my momma ain’t raise no lil bitch doesn’t mean I’m not in pain
I had a nurse tell a friend once that everything was fine and that nothing was wrong when I noticed that the vitals on her monitor were off. A few moments later she had to go under emergency anesthesia. A lot of nurses and doctors need to go through bias training
You need to get in the doctors face and tell them it's an emergency make them listen speak out... be loud... it's your life. If they don't listen go to another hospital.
I know this is primarily about black women but my mom has experienced this and she’s a brown Mexican woman. So a few years ago my mom was complaining about something in her chest burning, her doctor said it was acid reflux. Months later she ended up having to get her gallbladder removed, about a week after the surgery she didn’t feel well. She told her doctor that her shoulder hurt a lot & she was having chest pain, she was told it was normal. A few days later my mom was at the ER because the pain worsened and turns out her lungs were filled with blood clots which could have been fatal. 3 years later, my mom has this chronic cough which is diagnosed as bronchitis. She ends up visiting a specialist that shows that she had smoker lungs (she’s never smoked). Turns out she had to get 1/3 of her lung cut off and if she wouldn’t have, it could’ve turned into fibrosis or cancer.
I actually lost my sister because of all this mess she passed away delivering her it was the saddest moment of my life
How is this a race issue?! She was seen immediately and it was decided that it wasn’t an emergency issue. That to me is an incompetence issue. Also how stupid do u have to be to leave the hospital when you’re having chest pains?! She obviously should’ve kept bugging the staff until someone checked on her again.
Absolutely raise hell, ignorant people will find a way to have a problem with you even if you're being polite and considerate. Your health is most important, and if you have to, speak to an administrator or manager.
Shortness of breath and chest pains... call 911 from where ever you are...don’t go sit in an ER and wait
I would not only bring someone with me but I would defininetly record them the whole time..... In case anything happens, I got proofs on my phone
I'm white and they've done this to me too. I could've lost my pregnancy and my life waiting all day for medical attention. Luckily my mom took me to another hospital. Doctors just don't listen to pregnant women.
Just make sure they don't call the police on you in fear and you end up in jail.
I literally won’t have another child because of this smh
rip to my bff who passed away lack of Dr's helping her.
Sad reality is that ED/ER is normally very understaffed. As a result, nurses have to make a decision on who is more urgent than the other when everyone is screaming urgent. Its really sad but often its out of control for the nurses because they can only do so much.
Well I live in Canada sooo, can’t relate but hope America gets better
“And if your are in the emergency room raise hell” -Loni Love ❤️☺️👍🏿😘😘 I will certainly do that 💯.
Great topic thank you
The racists in the US is soooooo disgusting
Doctors and nurses should've been ashamed of themselves for taking 4 to 10 years of college to get their degrees and wouldn't help the woman out....What was the point of taking medical field classes?
Women's health issues and hormonal changes are basically ignored and not considered as important or necessary as they do for men
The healthcare system is seriously flawed in so many ways that it's a huge problem for Americans. If you're not rich you are pretty much going to die waiting for help to come.
I agree with you Adrian ....there should be accountability
As an ER doc please do not raise hell as this woman is advising. There is absolutely racial biases at play here but please be a civil advocate for yourself. It saddens me that doctors do not always advocate for their patients.
You have to sign a medical release that states you’re going against medical advice by leaving the Emergency Room against doctors orders. Had she actually stayed there (regardless of the wait time) this could’ve been prevented. I mean she was going home? Why not stay there to be treated ? All the blame is on the medical professionals, but she should have never left the ER.
This is also why it’s so important that we have women of color as our doctors. I would like to give a shout out to all the black doctors out there. For the longest time I would have high blood pressure readings during doctors appointments but I didn’t think much of it since my doctors never seemed concerned about it. It wasn’t till I got a new OGBYN who was black and she really expressed her concerns as my blood pressure was 140/90. So I went to my PCP and now I’m being treated for high blood pressure.
