Supersonic air travel is finally coming back

  • Published on Nov 13, 2018
  • Supersonic air travel is back. 15 years after the Concorde was grounded, everyone from aerospace companies to NASA to small startups is working to bring back ultrafast civilian aircraft. We take a look at the engineering challenges that make supersonic flight so difficult, and try to figure out what’s different about this new generation of planes.

I spent 3 months in NYC pre911 and NEVER saw the original Concord. Only 2 things id EVER wanted to see in my 43 years of life; the SR71 (which i saw just a few years ago in VA. MAN! That jet is MASSIVE!) and the Concord. I never got to see 1 before they got decommissioned. So sad😢😢😭😭😭😭😭😭

Last time the world saw supersonic passenger aircraft - the English & French built one and it worked (most of the time) but had its issues. The Russians built one and it worked too, but was typically Russian "agricultural" in the way that it worked. The Americans - well, they tried and failed. There never was an American supersonic passenger aircraft - it simply didn't make it past the drawing board and the Boeing executives' dreams. So forgive me if I am a bit skeptical this time around.

As long as the physics of super sonic flight don’t change and the airline industry remains a largely price sensitive business, there will NEVER be a profitable super sonic airliner.
All the dreams in the world can’t make the numbers add up.
... I guess IF the price of fuel dropped to around 2 cents a gallon and everyone learned to smile each time they heard a sonic boom, it might work; but I wouldn’t bet on any of that happening.

the Concorde was a great aircraft, but it was never successful, in spite of high cost fares for its passengers, it never paid for itself, by a huge margin, it cost so much to design and develop and produce, air fare never came close to making it lucrative, and it didnt carry enough passengers, it was all about the prestige and nostalgia that made Concorde viable, the money spent never justified the money it brought in, which was nil

Smaller and more expensive and this

Why not invest the $ on designing
New propulsion with less moving parts
Propulsion that won't need jet fuel?

Piss poor video, The Concorde's demise wasn't simply for the reasons they give here. It was mainly due to economics. It couldn't carry very many passengers, compared to other jets because of the design. The thing was a maintenance nightmare, and sucked fuel like like a flying Hummer with a gas leak. Then there was the sonic boom. The boom significantly restricted the flight areas it was allowed to travel. All of theses factors significantly increased the operation expense, putting out of reach for the average person. Unless all of these issues are solved, you can forget seeing supersonic air travel.

The real reason America banned Concorde from flying supersonic overland. It stemmed from the fact that Britain and France achieved what envious U S plane builders could not. Therefore companies such as Boeing lobbied the government to try and hinder and curtail the obvious speed advantage of Concorde over their own sub sonic offerings.

Fuel economy is the prime directive of most aircraft, they can easily do >50% of the speed if they care less about the fuel economy. A standard 747 can do 900m/h ground speed.
But nobody wants that; you get diminishing returns on fuel performance, so at 900m/h you're using 3x the amount of fuel.
Not only that: air travel is already something that's a large polluter to the earth, making it more attractive to "day trip to NYC for business people" is a direct contradiction with what we /should/ be doing as a global society.

In the 1965 book "Weather and Climate Modification, Problems and Prospects" Manabe calculated that water vapour from supersonic jets would raise surface temperature by 1.6C ...planes often fly in the stratosphere during winter in the northern hemisphere but supersonics would routinely fly in the stratosphere where residency time for the water vapour and particulate matter will be upwards of 5 years....where these products should not be, this accounts for the so called warming (often lied about i.e. Climate gate scandals) to date NOT CO2 driving climate but actually following climate changes, bottom line is that these aircraft will exacerbate climate change being blamed on man made CO2, of which is only 5% of the 0.0375% CO2 globally... more needless taxes impoverishing the West as per the UN Agenda 21 globalisation plan.

Hydrogen is much lighter in weight than helium, more research on hydrogen fuel can enable green energy aircraft. If fuel cells don't work, the hydrogen fuel can be directly burned if needed but at an efficiency drop. If they succeed in reducing the sonic boom coming as the aircraft pushes against the air in front of it, but if they don't the best way to fly faster than with an airplane is to use a spaceship. A hydrogen powered hybrid Boeing 777 + Space X Falcon 9 hydrogen powered air and space craft is interesting idea for those people. It will start to appear like a normal plane parked at the gate of the airport. Then once the passengers board it all of them paying $4digit tickets, it will begin moving out and taking off like an airplane. But then as it is in flight, the craft will flip from aircraft mode to spacecraft mode and continue take off into low earth orbit where it faces no air resistance. One in the orbit, it will straighten to fly toward its destination at such high altitude and as it gets closer to its destination, it will flip down to begin the decent down to earth. Once it gets down enough, it will flip back from spacecraft to aircraft mode where it will land on the runway and park at the gate.

Yet again no research on the real cause of the Concorde from this guy. Don't you just love it when they stuff up. The aircraft was ahead of its time the Americans tried to build one and failed, yet again , But if they managed to be successful and did bring one out . I bet they would have said nothing about the pollution or the sound barrier at all, They would have made a world wide promotion of that aircraft to gain orders. This is what put the end to Concorde and its sales program. As a young lad growing up nothing was said about any aircraft breaking the sound barrier as the Concorde cruising altitude was over 60 thousand feet so what was the problem as this is the same as the USA military aircraft fly at today. USA do not like being beaten by anyone. If it was allowed to land at more USA airports that would have made the Concorde a profit making aircraft . The development of this fantastic aircraft if it was allowed to continue would have changed the way in which we would be travelling in the sky's today . Concorde had over 107 original orders . but USA air space banned it from landing at nearly all of their airports JFK was the one that had regular stops. this made the sales drop for this plane . Bring back Concorde.
