How corporations are addressing guns

  • While Congress and the White House have resisted laws to increase restrictions on gun purchases, companies are taking the lead in curtailing sales of firearms or ammunition, or in restricting customers from openly carrying guns in their stores. Lee Cowan talks with the CEO of Dick's Sporting Goods, Ed Stack, who has pulled some guns from his stores' shelves; former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who helped form the non-profit Everytown for Gun Safety; and with gun advocate Dianna Muller, who is against unelected corporate figures making gun policy in America.

"If we do these things and we save one life, don't you think it's worth it?" Well... what if by taking guns off your shelf you limit access which in turn reduces the number of times firearms are used in self defense each year from over 4 million to something like 3.5 million? What if violent crime goes up by 500,000 just because you removed guns from your inventory. Do you have the same internal conflict? Will you even bother to measure the impact? The facts are that firearms are used in self defense millions of times each year. Access to those firearms causes some crimes and prevents others. By eliminating firearms you are choosing to go down the road of eliminating self reliance and self defense. But someone who has been raised in a privileged upbringing would probably not understand both sides to this.

He's using Democrat talking points, not facts ... ALL gun purchases from any firearm dealer, already require an FBI background check. And when he says "90% of people support background checks"... that is propaganda being passed around by a anti-gun lobbying group. They polled non-gun owners and gave them vague questions that they weren't able answer in an informed manner.

Dianna Muller,I h Im a gun owner, I have real problem with characterizing the AR-15 as a sporting rifle, as in a rifle that can be used for hunting. Sure it can be used for hunting deer. Thing is semi-auto rifles manufacture for big game typically have five tound magazines, should the AR be limit to five rounds as well? That woman police officer from OK went to constructing a straw man, by bringing up statistics as to how many are killed killed by hammers used as a weapon. Not really vallid if massacres are being committed by someone using a hammer ASAIK. The nearest Dick's is five hour away, so I can confirm or refute his claims, as well as claims made by Stack ot others in the comment comments. Gun crime is going down as individual gun ownership is going up, nationally. You fear mongering in order to push a political narrative that works mainly against law-abiding citizens is the only straw man argument made, as you simply dismiss the statistics that demonstrate how wrong you are about the potentiality for violence.

The statistics are valid if your interest in the truth and preventing deaths. Rifles of any type aren't used in crime much at all. The fact that you focus only on deaths occurring in highly publicized "mass" shootings proves you couldn't care less about the victims of gun violence but only wish for authoritarian control. How many times have you protested the seemingly countless individual deaths in any major urban center carried out with a HANDGUN? My guess is NEVER.

Until for-profit corporations started becoming pro-active, there was only one corporation dictating matters concerning guns. I'm a gun owner, but have decided not to join the NRA. I have to believe the NRA and the more ignorant of it's members, are probably the biggest threat to my continued gun ownership.

A key point left out of this video: when Dick's took the AR-15 out of stores in 2012, they near immediately acquired the Field and Stream brand specifically to keep selling the gun. No matter how much this man says he is reviewing and thinking about this issue, at the end of the day he is still as much in the gun business as ever before. Do not hold this man up as a shining example of feel-good capitalist reform. The Field and Stream franchise is now built with new Dick's in such a way that the consumer walks around the two stores and cannot tell where one stops and the other ends. Don't pretend you stopped selling guns when, in reality, you just bought a different store name so you could sell even more guns without the connection to the Dicks name. Surely when he is talking about removing all guns from Dicks, he just means moving them into the stock rooms in the Field and Stream stores. I'm sure if CBS had reported on this connection this man would not do the interview, but as journalists, you should not allow him to come onto this show to sell a book based on a false premise of going against the crowd for gun reform.

@Røbbin Mølk Wrong...yet again. When did I ever claim to own a gun? I have never owned a gun...not now, not ever. But I do support those who have the right to own guns, a right provided to them by the 1st Amendment. So, your assumption that I own a gun is wrong...because I do not own a gun.
