Okay. PSA: The amoeba that Mark was referring to is a species called Naegleria fowleri. It is an incredibly rare amoeba infection with less than 8 cases occurring in the US each year. The amoeba is typically found in warm freshwater lakes, rivers, and springs. People become infected when contaminated water enters the nasal passage and reaches the cribriform plate in the back of the nasal cavity. The cribriform plate has a high concentration of nerves that directly pass through to skull and into the brain. The amoeba infects these nerves and travels up to the brain. Although it is incredibly rare to contract this amoeba, you should still use distilled, sterile, or boiled water if you are going to be using a neti pot (since neti pots flush water through your entire nasal passage). Public drinking water (aka tap water) does NOT treat for naegleria fowleri and should not be used. Bottled water that is specifically labeled as "distilled" or "sterile" is safe to use. You will not become infected simply by drinking contaminated water with naegleria fowleri (since it is not entering your nose).

To be fair, these things actully do clean up the nasal passages well. Like that automatic one that I occasionally see on late night TV. Forgot the name but it really helps in clearing stuffy noses.
