The surprising habits of original thinkers | Adam Grant

  • Published on Apr 26, 2016
  • How do creative people come up with great ideas? Organizational psychologist Adam Grant studies "originals": thinkers who dream up new ideas and take action to put them into the world. In this talk, learn three unexpected habits of originals - including embracing failure. "The greatest originals are the ones who fail the most, because they're the ones who try the most," Grant says. "You need a lot of bad ideas in order to get a few good ones."

I take issue with Thomas Edison being painted as an "original thinker" ... Tesla was the original thinker, Edison stole ideas.

I can't remember who said it but they were called a genius and they countered the statement saying when they're sat down for a meal they're thinking about the problem. When they're walking to their friend's home they're thinking about the problem. When they're bathing they're thinking about the problem. That people were confusing effort and time for genius.

I'm with you althroughout your presentation. But one thing I disagree with is that Procrastinators don't start quick and finish slow. I think its the other way around. They don't start quick because thats when their creativity sparks and planning executes. They had a lot of considerations first before diving in. Churning out better and even unconventional options. Thinking is their strength but its a double edge sword. That's when analysis paralysis takes them over. But once they overcome it, voila, next potential unicorn is on its way.

I think this idea is not worth much because its founded on rediculous premise. The business survey with "creative" individuals coorelated wih procrastination insinuates cause effect relationship that requires scrutiny. The experiment with "creative" should be reviewed and replicated too. Identifying the relative creativity of different ideas is hardly objective and difficult to have control. Much of the rest of this is anecdotal. Objectively, this guy is great communicator, but he is not a very good scientist.

Fun fact: this is the first time you'll hear a sentence that goes like: "Chris Pratt on A pizza with pineapple wheels while he plays call of duty on the moon which is being exploded by aliens who are just clones of Barack Obama"
    that's a mouthful

The task is so simple to the original because they've already figured out how they're going to do it and spend their time fine tuning it in their head until either the deadline shows up or they get around to doing it. FYI they'll spend years if they need to without seemingly doing anything.

I didn’t see it all. But if you are a deep thinker, you are not deliberately procrastinating to have greater ideas later. That is not how it works. Instead you are prioritizing other goals in your life or things you deem more interesting at the moment!

    • Salty Potatoes

Gotta love how he goes on to explain that successful "originals" are usually taking an existing idea and making it better. So I guess they are more "original" than the people who came out with the original idea? Whatever. It's not about being original, it's about being successful at making a lot of money.

That's what I have. Idea doubt. I don't have a job. I am definitely a procrastinator. Just surfing the web waiting for something I think I will enjoy doing. This is why I am watching this video. Makes sense. However, when I had a job I had a lot of ideas for stories. Just no time to write them. Ideas that happen when you interact with others.
