PCR is not a DNA test. It is a process for replicating DNA samples for testing.

The biggest problem cinema has with creating a believable virus or what have you is the rate of infectivity vs. fatality. If something kills quicker than it spreads, it’s probably going to be easier to eradicate. But if it bides its time, builds up immunities and other adaptations, making itself more infectious under the radar without quickly killing its host, its far deadlier.

Contagion does do, in my opinion, the best job of depicting a pandemic and how it would be approached by health organizations. While not entirely accurate (it IS a movie), it is the film out of this bunch that really did its research.

  • Wabbitstewed
    Wabbitstewed 5 hours ago

If you did go through a disease checkpoint, the health officials would not want to cause a scene, because everyone would just go bonkers and there would be chaos. They would attempt to separate the sick quietly and calmly, but not against their will or with militant force.

Disagree @14:21. This is clearly a military operation as well. So if martial law was declared or a state of emergency was declared sick people would be forced into isolation, not asked like this guy suggests. Quarantine "impose isolation on (a person, animal, or place)"

Makes sense to decontaminate before going in and out of a room with an alien lifeform. You wouldn't want to infect an alien with viruses found on earth.

Here in Philippines. We can actually say that quarantine and martial law is not actually like in a movie. No arrest, no panic, might be a panic buying but there is no chaos. Actually we like martial law, no crimes and no criminals around.

I would imagine they decontaminate before entering the isolation in ET in an effort to minimize contact between ET and earthly pathogens? Not that it does much good since the little freak's been eating candy that's been in an 8 year old's hands for the entire month...

Brilliant insight calmly delivered. And to think this guy would love to be involved if alien life forms were detected just to see what kind of pathogens and viruses they might bring with them. These people are amazing - rushing in to fight against contagious diseases when - to be honest - most of us would run in the opposite direction. Heroes.

I'm sure it's already been said but about the ET thing. I was thinking where he mentioned they wouldn't really need to decontaminate before going in but rather going out. What if the point was so no human pathogens would be brought in rather than just alien pathogens getting out?
