Benjamin makes numbers dance. In his day job, he's a professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College; in his other day job, he's a "Mathemagician," taking the stage to perform high-speed mental calculations, memorisations and other astounding mathematic stunts. It's part of his drive to teach math and mental agility in interesting ways, following in the footsteps of such heroes as Martin Gardner.
TEDxOxford is organised by University of Oxford students, aiming to bring together the young minds of tomorrow's world with the movers and shakers of today. TEDxOxford is kindly sponsored by Neptune Investment Management - www.neptunefunds.com
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Multiplying by 576 (which sum of digit is 18 or 1+8=9) so sum of digits of answer will be always 9. This is a high school problem.
By using vedic mathematics you will be vocal calculator. This is not surprise.

  • Luis Henrique Lira da Fonseca Fonseca

Very interesting how many people on the comments are completely amazed and I see no one mentioning Soroban and Anzan. I thought he was using Anzan until he exposed his method in the end and it was quite obvious that the method is more cumbersome and slower than Anzan. Not to say that it is "bad" or doesn't work, but since he sells the method, it should be fair to compare with the competition.
If anyone is amazed by this I suggest you to watch videos of 7-9 year old Japanese kids multiplying and dividing much, much bigger numbers. Then search for "Chinese Math Competition" and get your mind really blown away. That is Anzan.

With the calendar trick, there is a way to calculate w/o the Gregorian calendar: I just base my calculations on the fact that Oct 4 was a Thursday in 1582, when the calendar was changed. (The next day, for the Gregorian was Friday October 15, 1582.)
