  • An enlightening and provocative presentation is given by Valter Longo updating audience on the benefits of fasting for life-extension.
Dr. Valter Longo is the Edna M. Jones Professor of Gerontology and Biological Sciences, and Director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California - Davis School of Gerontology, Los Angeles. Dr. Longo’s studies focus on the fundamental mechanisms of aging in simple organisms, mice and humans. The Longo laboratory has identified several genetic pathways that regulate aging in simple organisms and reduce the incidence of multiple diseases in mice and humans. His laboratory also described both dietary and genetic interventions that protect cells and improve the treatment and prevention of cancer and other diseases in mammals. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1997 and his postdoctoral training in the Neurobiology of Aging and Alzheimer’s Diseases at USC. He started his independent career in 2000 at the University of Southern California, School of Gerontology.

Fasting is as simple as skipping or reducing the size of a meal. Ask your brain n your body before u do so. Trust me I'm an Indian and not a guru.

Why is it the government and all the doctors highly recommend you eat breakfast and saying that that is the most important meal of the day??
That is such BS. From a person who has done intermittent fasting (17 hour) every day for the past year, I've never felt better than now. I have practically every bad health risk in my family and I can feel the onset of diabetes creeping in but I'm able to keep it at bay doing this method.
When doing this, you have to stop eating at 7 p.m. That is when your organs and your body is going into its resting phase. Don't eat ANYTHING after that until the next day at 12 p.m. the only thing you can have in between that time is water. That's all you will need to satiate that hunger which is in actuality thirst.
If you do this along with high intensity exercise when you can, especially towards the end of the fasting period, you will not only lose weight quickly but you will maintain a healthy, happy, motivated and depression free life with good blood level numbers.

Those two things along with an overall reduction of sugar in your diet is all you will need to maintain a truly healthy lifestyle. That will be tough because sugar is in EVERYTHING and that industry is very powerful and more insidious than the tobacco industry.
Doing this, it will be tough the first few times but once you get the hang of it, it becomes easy. Water is all you need...not cofee or even tea.

Fascinating talk but it has left me hugely curious about what the fasting mimicking diet is exactly. The dramatic results were seen when the humans were on the fasting mimicking diet for 5 days for 3 months. This talk does not say that intermittent fasting for a few hours will produce the same results, it is not about intermittent fasting. Plus the magic happens during re-feeding, which implies a very high quality meal at the end of the fast! What would that be? So many questions!!

McDonalds probably isn't going to introduce the "fasting burger" anytime soon. capitalism would take a swoon if "consumers" (i hate that term) were to stop eating massive piles of food. the "health" industry would have no more sick people whose symptoms they could profit from, social security would need reconsidered, children would be geriatric before they inherited the house. i'm not saying we shouldn't get healthy, but what about the economy? what about society? arent we supposed to work hard, spend money and die young?

a lot of old people on a family does not imply easily a genetic reason for their longer living, there's some character's traits that could be the factor, absence of heavy, worried, stressed out states of mind, look at that old lady smoking her cigar, she seems so relaxed, so calm, maybe there was no psychological polution stressing her organism over the years, and that could be the result of biological inclinations but also could be the result of some treasure on the family's "micro"-culture that shapes behaviours, emotions, beliefs giving them a healthier, stronger mind and heart.

Oh yeah, when people would ask me about my weight loss, etc. I used to tell them about IT and the problems with our foods...now I just keep my mouth shut because all it does is waste my time, pisses them off ("No one is going to ell me what to eat.", "I couldn't do that I'd die!!!!! or "Starve to death.") and very few people are interested in doing anything that necessitates changing their daily lives even if it will help them.

People are brain washed into thinking they need to eat 3 meals a day, or that they need food for energy and must eat on a regular basis, AND they eat food that doesn't really satiate them so they feel hungry all the time. They are truly addicted to the sugars and starches in their diets. Lastly, many people think they will automatically get sick and if the stop eating for even a few hours.

So - don't be upset....and don't hate me !! :))///but ,,window" under 16 hours is not ,,intermitent fasting"....I see here people talking about 2 hours.....for starting....? :)) - Someone is eating continuosly ??? Wake up people !!! It's very easy to start !! I start fasting the next day i hear about benefits....Untill then i was eating 5-7 times a day....and without avoid snaking.
Some people can ask - How you could you succeed ? It's useless - to say- Depends on your will.....More util it's to tell you tricks to command your ,,will".
I look at food being an enemy....like something to avoid....Everybody wants to live longer ...i supose ?? So - food should be regarded like an obstacle...for a longer life. I hope .

The point of a two-hour window is that you fast for 22 hours of the day and eat within a window of two hours. Not the other way around. Nobody eats all day every day. We can't eat while we're sleeping.

Would be interesting to do a study with people from 2 groups -- one group of people that are accustomed to fasting and a separate group that haven't done much fasting before the experiment. Reasoning would be whether stress hormones play a factor in effectiveness of starting to fast until the conclusion of the experiment. People accustomed to fasting probably wouldn't as worried about their next meal and dealing with hunger pangs and so anxiety about something they've never tried before would be less and could result in significantly different results between the two groups. Some people fast as part of their religious beliefs and have been doing it since an early age so it isn't so new to them.

Fasting isn't just "telling" the body to regenerate. The body always wants to regenerate; it's just that only with the massive burden of digestion gone does the body have the surplus of resources to undertake deep regeneration projects.
This is also why fasting+complete rest and withdrawal from all life activities is even more effective and can produce miraculous results.

I started IF to loose weight and regain my health. I'm down 45 Lbs in 8 weeks.
I started with the 16/8 plan then moved to the 20/4 plan which I only did for a few days before moving to a 23.5 hour fast.
Even though it's not easy it is far easier than calorie restriction...

I do a two meal a day, 16/8 diet with as few carbs as I can. Lost 53 pounds in four months. Better, I got OFF insulin, after having been on it for 14 years. Blood pressure dropped dramatically. I don't need to be sold any further. (note) I'm now doing one meal a day twice a week. Not eating any more than when I have two meals. The difference is astonishing. My blood work shows virtually every marker significantly improved. When my weight goal is achieved I'm gonna do a longer fast. Mainly for the autophagy which they say will help clean up the loose skin I've gotten from weight loss. But the 16/8 meal plan I plan to stick with till I die. Nothing but benefits from my point of view.

Who knows about the best way for man to keep himself in good health and free himself of all diseases than the one who created man and the one who loves his creation? There is nothing left to mention about the best life for man in this world and in hereafter that Islam has not mentioned it. Study about the subject of fasting in the school of Islam. Study about the concept of God in Islam. Do not be selfish; do not give blind eyes in order to ignore the truth. Have courage and be an open minded person. Study about the teaching of Islam. You will find in the School of Islam the recipe of the medicine for all diseases. Come to salvation. Come to Islam; come to good health; come to prosperity.

Even sick dogs ,cats and other animals don't eat . Fasting was recommended by ancient Greeks as well as Indians almost 1000-3000 years before Islam came.

I wonder how long these positive effects lasted after completing the FMD?

I think in the paper they say they could measure the effects up to 3 months post fasting. So basically if you do it 4 times a year you cover the whole year.

Roy Walford died of ALS. I am curious if there's any correlation between stressing the body to such significant levels and damage to the motor neuron system. I know that ALS has ties to a stressed nervous system. Hopefully the lesson from his cause of death is that even fasting should be done in moderation and carefully.

A couple years back I underwent a 22-day, water-only fast. Not an easy thing to do, particularly the first 5-7 days. It's nice to know that it gets easier as days pass, as toxins are removed from the body. I actually felt invulnerable from disease and infection after the 10-day mark and was feeling quite good overall. Most importantly, is what foods and quantities you consume when breaking the fast. Overall, it was a very healing experience.

I did write-up a set of 'guidelines', following my 22-day fast. It's a Word document. Also, search YT for 'water only fasting' and you'll come across some very helpful videos.
