The dark magic of communication - How we manipulate others | Christopher Cummings | TEDxNTU

  • Published on Apr 3, 2017
  • Communication is a seemingly magical process that affords us the ability to understand one another through the use of our voice and body. However, the magic of communication can be used either benevolently or maliciously. This TEDx talk delves into the magic of communication and highlights how communication is used strategically to influence people to make decisions that they would not have otherwise.
Serving as Assistant Professor at NTU’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information, Dr. Cummings’s teaches Strategic Communications, while carrying out research into the critical role that communication plays in decision-making processes in the medical industry. Through his talk, he unravels the magic behind communications, revealing to the audience the coercive trick of communication.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

How is it possible that this had 34,000 views and only 17 comments? Maybe because when I first started watching I thought it was going to be amazing I love communication and this guy is really good looking. He was off to a good start but the end didn't pack a punch that I would have liked. I guess the message is that we should fear some things more and fear other things less and the label we give them causes us to fear more or less? I wish there could have been more examples of how language is used to manipulate us such as the marketing of Edward Bernaise etc.. I would have liked to learn more about what it is, how to recognize language when ot is being used to manipulate and what we can do about it. I mean he is in the medical industry right? That industry uses advertising to get people to pay for pharmaceuticals, maybe we'll hear some shocking medical truth from Mr. Cummins once he is no longer getting the paycheck? Great presentation and speaker style, a bit of news and not much deep content.

You should be. Language is the way we interpret and see the world. Those who speak a different language than you see a different version of the world. There are words in languages that have so many meanings that another language may not have. You will therefore not know a depth of feeling/perceiving that another person knows. And vice versa based on the language you are native to. Language can be used to manipulate and brainwash people it's the filter we use to understand and know people. Speeches have literally gathered people to a cause and started wars. Everything you see is language from the TV you hear and the papers you read. It is more powerful than you're aware of.

    Well spoken.
We are bombarded with hate propaganda and fear inducing tactics on an hourly basis, it is constantly communicated to us and it corrodes or 'affects' perspective.
