Let's wait until a car is actually out before we start comparing it to cars that actually are. I'll never buy a car I haven't driven - ever, it's a bad idea for several reasons.

My bolt lease is up next year, I started filing out the Tesla test drive form but when I found they were three hours away I stopped and left the site. Tesla contacted me about a test drive. I gave them the reasons I stopped filling out the form, I thought that would be the end of it - it wasn't. I started getting emails and calls. Finally when I got a call about a PV system I put my foot down. The sales person said I checked the PV box, I didn't, I have 10Kw of PV already. They're not calling anymore. I won't be partially filling out any of their forms ever again.

Tesla is 3 hours away, they could put a dealer in the capital Albany which would work for me but they don't, they may be trying to keep the cost down - they lost a potential sale. Instead the salesman who called was in NV. A dealer 3 hours away with a salesman in NV, what's wrong with this picture? What if I hit a deer and one of those very expensive body panels have to be changed? What if I have a problem their mobile service can't fix? I asked those questions but never got an answer.

The Bolt has been wonderful, it's not as fast as a Tesla by a half second or so but I don't care - it's insignificant, think about it. I like the hatchback, the size is fine for us, I don't need to seat 7 people, call me when Tesla makes a hatchback for $35k that compares to my Bolt. Right now the 'Y' is not out and the price already starts at $47k. Not fair? Not every one wants a $47k car that seats 7 people, some of us want a $35k car that seats 5 people, Tesla doesn't make one of those.
Some of us want a dealer 15 minutes away that will give us a loaner car. Tesla doesn't have one of those either.

If we're going to make comparisons let's do it on a level playing field.

  • Phil Melson
Phil Melson 7 months ago +2

The model 3 and Y are basically the same car, with the exception that one is booted and the other hatchback, hence the difference in cargo space. Perhaps when electricity is cheaper and less harmful to the environment to produce, buying an electric vehicle may well be the norm. But the costs will have to go way lower than that of the fossil fuel alternatives for people to change.

Tesla’s continuing viability as a successful company are not in question. Too many nay-sayers out there predicting Tesla’s doom since the day they came out with their first Roadster. We were constantly informed by so called financial pundits (of rather dubious distinction) that Tesla was about to completely crash financially because their goals weren’t realistic. The brilliant Elon Musk is constantly derided, called a charlatan and a con man - he is neither. He’s been predicted to fail at every turn. He hasn’t. A few minor setbacks in a brave and outstanding new venture? Yeah, like any other company, but quietly, he forges ahead.
Tesla are the future we’ve been waiting for - making yesterday’s sci-fi a reality today.
Tesla are gonna be just fine, and the cyber-trolls doing their best to smear Tesla will eventually crawl back under their cold damp rocks in defeat!
      Go Tesla, Go Elon Musk!

When you say "companies" do you mean ford and chev? We know they are struggling with poor financials and also missed the EV boat by a long shot.
Tesla has more credibility and stability than than ford and chev combined.

Guys, a car is just to get you from point A to point B, not show off. So instead of an overpriced Tesla or ANY LUXURY CAR, just get a Toyota Prius Prime, Nissan LEAF, Hyundai Ioniq Electric, or VW e-Golf.
Instead of changing your expensive DEPRECIATING liability cars every 6.5 years like most Americans (per IHS Automotive), why not just drive a reliable Toyota or Honda 'til it dies 20+ years later, and instead invest the savings into APPRECIATING assets like stocks, gold, silver, or even a higher-class house for yourself.

      @juster2432 Exactly!
Teslas have tons of panel gaps, bubbling paint, and water leaking issues. I just wouldn't BLOW $35K+ on a poorly-made Tesla.
Tesla fanboys argue that they have reached 300K miles, but 300K+ mile Teslas are the exception, not the norm. Even rubbish Fiat Chrysler could make that claim. Whereas, that's just the break-in mileage for GASOLINE Toyotas and Hondas. Maybe if Tesla fanboys wouldn't compare with unreliable American (except Ford) or German-branded cars so much, they'll see how bad of deal Teslas are. Tesla fanboys are just as bad as Apple fanboys.

A Rogue starts at 25k$ and has more cargo space, Explorer and Highlander start in the low 30s and offer a lot more cargo space and 3 rows.
This sacrifices the SUV looks, the 3rd row usability and cargo space for extreme efficiency. It turns it into a coupe SUV, a relatively small niche aimed at folks that don't really want a SUV. And it will also heavily cannibalize the Model 3. There is no hesitation between a sporty sedan and a 7 seats SUV but this is more of a sedan-minvan hybrid than a SUV.
The market for 40k$ SUVs and above is limited as it is and even if you look at total cost of ownership, the drastic sacrifices they make for the sake of efficiency,, severely reduce the value of the product and limit the market. The core of the market pays for space not performance. 40% of sales will come from Model 3 customers and another 15-20% from minivan customers but very few from SUV buyers. Tesla will sell 2-3 times fewer units than they hope for and the loss of Model 3 sales comes on top of that. This is by far the biggest mistake they have made. The lack of progress vs Model 3 is also scary, 3 years later and no innovation to reduce costs and enable a great SUV with solid value.
It's much better than other EVs and it's a fine coupe SUV but it's not good enough to grab 500-800k units per year from ICE SUVs. It's the first Tesla vehicle that is not competitive in the targeted market and deeply disappoints the vast majority of potential customers. I'll note that I do not like SUVs, would never buy one and I would take this over a proper SUV with zero hesitation but this is not the vehicle Tesla should have made. They are gonna be in trouble for the next 4 years up to the point when they can make a smaller sedan and SUV at bellow 30k$. They got nothing else high volume before 2022-2023, just Roadster, high end pickup truck, Semi.

@Alita Kicksa**! agreed but other "SUVs" at least have cladding and some ground clearance that would allow certain degree of off roading... but model Y has the clearance of a sedan and no cladding. There is no reason to own this as opposed to the model 3. Also this is a missed opportunity to change the ugly tail light design of Tesla

      It's a crossover (CUV) -- A big cargo car on a platform of a Sedan (model 3)
Rivian is a SUV -- A big cargo vehicle on a platform of a small pick up truck (like ford range)
Tesla is doing their pick up truck now, in the end of the year (like august or September) they will reveal it. . Here is a teasing not much helpful of it:
Probably will be more in the size of a Ford F Series than a Ford Range/Rivian And probably they will do a SUV version of it as well. Or even a Van. I don't know, but the *platform* will finally be there.

      Johnny Jonathan 8 months ago

It's a crossover (or CUV), actually. A SUV built in the platform of a car/sedan (Model 3).
Wagons are longer and hatchback smaller (like a Bolt or Golf).
The cargo space of the Bolt is 55 ft, the Golf 53 ft and the Model Y 66 ft. A normal SUV-- which is build in a small pick up truck platform (like Ford Range) -- has 87 ft of total cargo space (Ford Explorer)

This was always going to be the announcement where it is was either something radically different to what was expected or almost exactly what was expected. It turned out to be the latter, but I think this is a good thing. This wasn't a step where Tesla should go off on some wild design rampage. It does look very similar to the Model 3 but there are significant differences, one of the main ones being that it's a hatchback. Demand for Model 3 will continue to be strong but whatever you think of crossovers (the disadvantages of an SUV combined with the disadvantages of a hatchback) it's a growing segment and I think the Y could sell even better than Model 3. Btw, to some of the commenters here, the Model 3 looks much nicer in the flesh but isn't intended to be as flash as the Model S or X.

and now that Tesla Model S is looking old and outdated .. it's styling is not enduring ... It's way past time for a Model S next generation replacement .. Tesla has much work to do if it wants to be like a real car company. They are doing good, but need to step up the game, hire more people, obtain billions of investment dollars .. and pump out a multi platform lineup, each with several models / brands .. and do this in every major global market ... maybe another $30 billion should do it, and 15 years .. then the current stock market cap would be a fair value.
