My name is Gemma and I live near Manchester in the UK with my boyfriend Matt and our poodle cross rescue dog Maddie.
I film my videos using a Canon 600D and I use a variety of lenses but the majority of the time I shoot using a Sigma 30mm f1.4.
I edit all of my videos using Final Cut Pro and I also use Adobe After Effects and Motion to create titles and effects sometimes.
The music I use in my videos is either from the royalty free RU-clip Audio Library or specifically written for my videos by my boyfriend Matt. Occasionally I use songs by other friends of mine and I always link those in the video description.

I think the UG curl whip mousse has dimethicone in the ingredients . . . might be worth double checking. I had been using this too until I became aware of this.

just a heads up, I think the naughty hello wave products you're using might not be cg friendly. its quite rare to find an entire range of products that are. I find a good way to check is to find an ingredients analyser that you can copy and paste the ingredients into and it will give you more details about what you are actually putting into your hair

I cannot thank you enough for this video; I’ve started to discover that I have wavy/curly hair and I thought that I was doing what was best until I started learning about the curly girl method.
Everything I’ve found on RU-clip seems to be based on products in America and you’re the first person I’ve actually found who is 1) from the UK and 2) who seems to have gone through the process I’m about to start.
Thank you for giving me the confidence to try this further and giving me hope that it is doable to fix the damage I’ve been doing to my hair without even knowing it!!

Question - my hair looks wavy and smooth after I’ve washed it and it’s dried. But when I sleep on it and wake up, it starts to get frizzy and looks dry. How do I stop this from happening??

    • Mira Stone
Mira Stone 7 months ago +1

Oh and also maybe try an oil in the morning to moisturize and kind of de-frizz. I prefer jojoba oil, but a lot of people like argan oil.

    • Mira Stone
Mira Stone 7 months ago +1

So you can sort of sleep in a plop, or what I did before chopping my hair so short I can't pull all of it up, is I'd make a ponytail literally on top of my head at night. It looks ridiculous, but it definitely helps. When my curls would start to be less curly, I would do a bun on my head. And by on top of my head, I mean actually on top, so you don't sleep on your ponytail.

When you go to bed what you do to your hair? Leave it alone? Up or down? How you maintain it next day? Thank you ☺️

    • siren electric
siren electric 10 months ago +2

Yanet D i do something called a “pineapple” I’m sure you can see a lot of demos from curly hair channels showing how to do it. It’s almost like a bun on the top of your head so your curls don’t get smashed or frizzy. You can also sleep on a satin pillow case to help prevent frizz and it’s easier on your curls. As for refreshing curls the next day there’s so many methods it’s picking which one works best for you. Some ppl sleep in the “crunchy cast” you make with the products and break it up the next day. Or you can put some water in a spray bottle, add a pea size amount of conditioner, shake it up and spray your curls then add additional product to your hair and scrunch it again....or diffuse it a little as well if you have time (also lots of helpful tutorials on this. It’s all about what feels best for you and your hair. Best of luck on your journey!

This was so helpful, thank you. I think I know where I’ve been going wrong whenever I’ve tried the CG method. Not enough Gel, not enough scrunching the gel out.
My hair is ridiculously porous, I find it very difficult to tell when it’s dry under the gel.

Your hair looks so pretty curly! I have been using the Kinky Curly Knot Today and their Curling Custard. The Curling Custard gel works really, really well for me. I do not know if you can get it easily in the UK, though. I recently watched a video from Penny Tovar where she used a wig cap to plop instead of a tee shirt. I have not tried that method yet but it looks easier than the tee shirt method!

One of the ingredients listed on that sainburys gel you linked is Dimethicone so I don't think it should be part of a curly girl method routine

I've been looking for a good gel as the one I loved is no longer available so I'm going to give the Umberto Giannini one a go after watching this. I'd love to see how you style your hair on non wash days a these are the days I struggle with. yass I just started the curly girl method yesterday - did not put enough gel in today and it took too long to dry without a towel / diffuser and the curls looked a bit shit so I already brushed them out lol... but just making the switch from sulphate shampoos and products with silicone has made one hell of a difference already. it's pretty amazing really!
