  • Do you talk to strangers? If you do and have always done so, your answer will probably be "Yes. There's nothing wrong with it." But if you're someone who has never talked to strangers, this talk is for you. Helen Moses, Voice and Communication Strategist, imagines a new era where everyone's voice is heard and respected; where everyone feels confident expressing their opinions and ideas in a way that invites others to listen. Her vision includes a world of heart-centered communication, where we will assume the best of people we don’t know, and as a reward, we will get to enjoy common ground that would have otherwise gone undiscovered. Over the years, Helen has shared her voice as a singer, speech-language pathologist, business owner, coach, speaker, writer, and mother. She is the owner of Speak Up Communications and the author of the prescriptive memoir Voice Unleashed: Speaking Up with Faith and Courage. She lives in Raleigh, NC, with her husband of 25 years. They have a son in college, a daughter in high school, and two ten-year-old cats. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. What a powerful and meaningful message, Helen! Just one kind word or deed can dramatically change not only someone else's life but our own as well.

Yes, good things happen, indeed. The last few weeks I've run into 2 incredibly beautiful ladies in their 90's. In their sharing I met, probably for the first and last time, them in passing at the grocery store. Their truth, their attitude toward the life they've lived and the deep faith they have allowed to deepen well into their 90's. Awesome. I walked away a better person.

I love your clear way of explaining these simple actions, Helen! I know you are a kind person, and now I see you are smart too :) I love the acronym - Thank - Acknowledge - Listen - Kind (TALK), and your examples of how you have shown these in real life, in meeting your neighbors (wow :) and helping people in your community. I talk to "strangers" every day in my online communities, and we often become friends, but it's that FIRST step that is important. There are no barriers to talking to a person you don't know, if you do it in a kind way, and they accept your invitation to connect, on whatever level helps you both. Thanks for this amazing talk :)

Thanks for your comment, Laurel. I especially love your last point - There are no barriers to talking to a person you don't know, if you do it in a kind way, and they accept your invitation to connect, on whatever level helps you both. ❤

I absolutely love this talk! Deep, insightful and wonderful stories to illustrate the importance of true connection. Helen delivered this talk with such authenticity and warmth I actually felt drawn to do exactly what she says - to connect with people I don't know... YET :)

Your presentation motivated me to gather up my courage and take an invitation to all the neighbors on my street to a BBQ our church was hosting! Result? Some great conversations - just what we all need more of right now!

Great message and technique to reach out and connect with others. So many people walk around engrossed in their phones, without really engaging others. There is a quote that the quality of your life is determined by the quality of your relationships. As you point out relationships start when you met and engage with someone you don't know.

We are missing out on some wonderful relationships when we aren't tuned into the possibility of their existence!

Great talk. Take the risk, Thanking, Acknowledging, Listening, being kind... those aren't actions that typically evoke negativity. Great challenge Helen. Love this!
