We drove these electric cars until they DIED!

  • Coronavirus: Click here for advice for car buying during the pandemic - bit.ly/-Car-Buying-Advice
How far can these electric cars go before they die?! We drove the Tesla Model 3, Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-Pace, Nissan Leaf, Kia e-Niro and Mercedes EQC across the UK to see how long they could last! Sure, the smart money is on the Tesla, with its claimed range of up to 348 miles - but can the manufacturer's figures really be trusted? Will victory instead go to the sporty-feeling I-Pace, or the posher EQC? Or will the more affordable likes of the e-Niro and Leaf pull a major upset and make it the furthest? There's only one way to find out...

It's ironic isn't it to see mercedes runs out of battery first....because they have exceptional power unit in F1 which include the battery - MGU, and spread they're career to formula e yet could't transfer it to it's mass car product also same as audi, BOO.....but very good for kia niro and also TESLA, wonderful. Anyway, what is thay conk out word means? Am i type it right?

The rated milege is tested in mixed city and highway driving. EV's are more efficient at lower speeds so that why the milages were shorter when you drove only mostly in highways.

Sadly in Australia unless you will interupt your trip range closer to 600 plus km is needed. I drive a 4wd with range of over 1200km per fillup so even range of normal fuel cars seems short. Even 45 years ago I had a two stroke Suzuki with 300km range and that was awkward on many trips. Electric vehicles are two short on range. There are inland highway streches of over 400km betwen fuel stops

  • BearThatHyper

Price to real life range (How much you pay for 1 mile of real life range)
    Mercedes : 194 miles at £62000 = £320 per mile
    Audi : 206 miles at £66000 = £320 per mile
    Nissan : 208 miles at £36000 = £173 per mile
    Jaguar : 223 miles at £61000 = £273 per mile
    Kia : 255 miles at £33000 = £129 per mile
    Tesla : 270 miles at £48000 = £178 per mile
If you only look at range, the Kia easily dominates, with the Tesla and Leaf being similar. The Merc, Audi and Jag are a lot more expensive when purely looking at range.

I asked if the battery was covered when I enquired about an e-Niro at my local Kia dealers and was told it will be replaced once it falls below 80% effectiveness on the 7-year warranty.

  • Eternal Optimist

Did you have any history for the cars? The nature of previous charge/discharge cycles will have a considerable effect on the battery capacity over time - this might also have been reflected in the overnight self-discharge that you noted. Running a car dead-flat as you did will negatively affect the battery lifetime, although the BMS should protect the cells from catastrophic damage. If one of them had been used for near-the-limit drives while another had been used for around town with regular top-ups there will be a difference in the state of the fully charged batteries.

@Carwow, Your test is not fair as you are comparing SUV with Sedans! It is same as you compare apples with pears! Of course Tesla wins, you should do the same with a Model X ... I challenge you! That would be fair, compare EQC, I-Pace, e-Tron and Model X! That is more or less the same segment.

Wow Mat, that was great. I have have a Tesla X and love it...Absolutely the best car I have ever owned. My wife and I picked it up at the factory in March 2017. My timing was great, free Super charging for the life of the car, it transfers to a new buyer if I sell it. I just turned 52,000 miles on it, and yes I have experienced range anxiety a few times. On one stop at a super charger, I arrived with a zero mileage left and prayed I would make it and back into the spot, I did! Another driver told me don't worry, you have at least another 20 miles. I said don't tell me that, I do not want to test that, it is over 6000 pounds.

  • James Graham

An excellent demonstration of how pathetically poor and even dangerous, electric cars are at the current stage of development. Pretty good video.. would like to know how long it takes to recharge these cars away from a 'supercharger'.. a bit unrealistic to base the distances on motorways where cruise control is available for much of the time (and at 70 mph.. ). So, very little demand due to acceleration, braking, stopping due to traffic and town traffic lights. Also the cost of these cars would be prohibitive to a large proportion of the population. My Jaguar diesel estate cost me all of 13000 pounds, has excellent filters to clean out all the bad stuff, actually cleaner than petrol.. I recently drove from Worcester to the west coast of Scotland cruising at around 80mph and was there by 11 am..had gallons of fuel remaining, had lunch and drove home. One stop for fuel took all of less than ten minutes and at no time was I threatened with the car wanting to drive at 10 mph and having to be distracted by complex electronics becoming a menace to other drivers. I'd like to see how these cars would deal with a trip to Cornwall, or to north Wales from South Wales, my guess is that you would need an overnight stop. I think maybe another 20 years before, if ever, they become practical.
