Disagree for me I stopped riding for a few years cause I rode Harley’s and fell hard into drinking. I sold my Harley’s sobered up ten yrs not a drop. I got the urge to ride again bought a vmax and magna now I have more fun than ever riding past bars and putting miles on instead of trying to fit in to a lifestyle of partying then going home, no accident, no dui, just knew this would catch up to me eventually. If I’m asked for advise I say msf course the best thing a person can do.😉

Yup. Got it right man. I passed my bike test 6 weeks ago. I must have had advice from at least 20 people in that time. So obviously I'm giving up the licence that cost me £800 And selling the bike I bought that I always wanted
Because advice from non bikers is ALWAYS right 😁😁😁😁

I think what it is people who are wreckless on a motorcycle are wreckless when it comes to the whole aspect of driving in general so when they have a bad experience on a motorcycle they tell other's that they used to ride and give them poor advice I think those people shouldn't be driving whether it's in a car or a motorcycle

Some of us used to rode but succumbed to others fears, other responsibilities, etc. and don't pick it back up until things change. I won't give advice other than wear a helmet is the most important safety device. Yes, I had bad experiences back then, I lost skills in the 23 year time which is why I watch you and so many other guys videos. I bought a 20-year-old KLR 650 so I could thrash it and not be upset by jacking a nice cruiser etc. Not all of us thought it was something we would never do again, some of us totally realized that we had lost our skill level, but were not full of advice. Heck when I started again, it took me about 3 full days of riding to turn corners from a stop properly and to get close (but not quite where I wanted to be and remember being) on the clutch. Some of us totally remember and know that we are as unskilled as new rider brother. (BTW, I had a bad experience at 87th and Quivera also, but it was in 1991 on my uncles KZ1100, but it didn't make me scared, it made me know I still had skills to build even back then.)

I agree! I hate it when I tell someone I ride a motorcycle, and they feel the need to tell me "oh, it's so dangerous! You can get killed. People die on those things" etc, etc, etc. What makes you think I want to hear all that shit!! hahaha!! But I agree with you, Dodge Rider - and I tell people - if you're smart, mature, don't do stupid shit, then riding a motorcycle is safe. It's the stupid people doing stupid shit, that give riding a bike a bad rep. Anyway, great video! Love the Concours... been struggling whether to get one or keep rinding my older 2000 Concours ZG1000. I dunno, that new Con is SWEET!!!!!!!!!!

#Iusedtoridebut I got into guitars. Trading seasonal meditation on two wheels for salvation on a string. Ever try hauling a gigbag with a Les Paul in it? Let's just say I lost my nerve quickly.
#Iusedtoridebut I dated a nurse for a while who referred to riders as "donors." Call me a pig, but I didn't want to donate anything to her in due time.
#Iusedtoridebut a responsible parent will not inflict passenger torture on his future biker-chic daughter until she can kick over her own bike.
    #Iusedtoridebut I got fat. It's not pretty.
#Iusedtoridebut western Kansas is too easy to leave behind, and south central Kansas is too much of a pit to escape.
#Iusedtoridebut I was married. Not only was she tone-def and frigid, but she didn't like the bike. Put it another way: giving it up was not my brightest moment.
#Iusedtoridebut the women my age that like to ride are taken. The older ones are worn our. And the younger ones are out of touch, crazy, substance abusers, or need a dad in their life. Partners on two wheels are rare if not fostered when both of you are in your teens.
#Iusedtoridebut I had the wrong bike. Gets expensive when the stable needs to grow to suit each flavor.
#Iusedtoridebut I don't anymore. Life is no richer for the loss.

Ok, I get what you're saying, but don't be so dismissive. Why is it bad when people give you advice? Why be offended when people care enough to worry for you? Just say thank you and move on if you think the advice is below you. In the case of the old story that you don't really remember, the lady may have been sincerely worried about a young guy on a motorcycle. I DO ride, and acknowledge that motorcycles are inherently more dangerous than cars. Are you denying that? Are you seriously that arrogant that when people show some care about their fellow humans that it bothers you? Are you saying that you are so "attentive and intelligent" that you are above the risks somehow? I typically really enjoy your videos but in this one you just came off as an arrogant jerk.

  • pressendforspanish

Ok.....you pull a wheelie on a public street and then go straight to complaining about someone elses driving! Really? Thats as far as I got on your video. You have no credibility on anything you say after that for your lack of common sense.

I can understand the concern or good intentions. It may be annoying to hear a lot, but it is good and heartfelt. I am an atheist so when people say merry Christmas or bless you I put it in the same category. "Thanks for the nice thoughts" and move on appreciating that they took the time to express kindness. Now if it is a lecture on how I'm doing things wrong or telling me what to do or what to believe then I will simply say bless your heart and move on. The people I think are a little out there, and so be it, that say they don't wear gear because they love to ride and fully expect and want to die on a motorcycle. More power to ya, but I can't understand the mentality.

The ones REALLY bothering me now, are the ones on our local FB motorcycle groups, our meetup pages etc....where they see a picture or video of someone and say they are wearing ONLY a helmet and no leather protection or whatever and feel the need to berate them....about setting bad examples, or how they should ride that way etc.... If it isnt illegal then F*CK OFF....mind your own business....if you want to talk to me about my bike or want to go for a ride GREAT....if you are going to be my MOTHER and tell me all the things YOU believe I am doing wrong or are bad choices....well RIDE ON!!....I am going to make my choices, and if someone cant handle that, well I REALLY wish they would jsut sit back and have a nice big bowl of "mind your business" and a side of "Shut the hell up"

I'm pro gun, and I love them, but of course guns make it easier to kill someone, therefore of course there are more murders because of guns. That's obvious.
However, if you disagree, try imagining stabbing someone - up close and personal v shooting them at a safe distance - an arm's length away from his knife.
I've been in a knife attack situation in a foreign street, it was nasty. He and his buddies were all heroin users. And he came at me from behind. Only the look in the face of the one facing me, my alertness and the fact that he was scared saved my life.
I've also been in firefights. The difference is stark. The option to strike from cover and at a distance are the greatest advantages, but the element of surprise (and therefore safety for the shooter) increases with distance.
Finally, that saying about the road to hell being paved with good intentions is a two sides coin. I suspect it comes from the perspective of the one with the good intentions. The problem is not with them, it's with the lack of empathy in the recipient.
I served in the military. I now work to convince young guys NOT to sign up for the next banker war. My success rate is 50% - with guys. It's ZERO with girls!!! Why? Because, like you, they distrust, reject my advice and assume some ulterior motive. In their case they assume I think they're not tough enough. They're wrong. I just don't want them to kill any innocent civilians on behalf of the banks and corporations, in a country we have no fucking business illegally invading.
All it takes is a little empathy. Oh, and the eponymous guy at the gas station may only be projecting his fears, but they may be based upon some real experience. That wall we build to learning from the cheap (for us) failures and mistakes of others is too tall and too solid - avoid it bro.

  • Old Guy on a Bike

We must be running into (pun) different breeds of "I used to ride" people. I almost never get the dangerous lecture. It's more often the wistful nostalgia chat about when they rode and sometimes how much they wish they had not stopped. Maybe it's because I look too old to be saved lol. In my youth I did hear lots of stories about old Harleys, Royal Enfields, Vincents etc., etc., and a great story from a dispatch rider in WWII.

Seems like the "I used to ride" part isn't the problem, so I'm not sure why you fixate on it. But I agree that strangers, especially strangers that have no idea about motorcycling, judge you and give unwarranted "advice", and this is super frustrating / annoying. Nice juxtaposition of the corrola lady story next to the almost getting hit while stopped at a red light story.

+Dodge Rider I have a question unrelated to this video. What are your thoughts about having a big sport tourer such as your Concours, or FJR1300 as your main, or only bike. I sold my '07 V-Strom 1000 and am in the market for a new bike. I'm thinking about replacing it with a new Yamaha Tracer GT, Super Tenere, or maybe even an FJR1300. I rode both the Tenere and FJR at Yamaha's demo days. Loved both bikes. Do think an FJR or Concours is too big as an everyday, only bike?

    • Dodge Rider
      Dodge Rider  Year ago +1

I used to ride a Concours14 as a daily. They only reason I sold it several years back was that I was riding daily in stop and go traffic and in Kansas summers the combination of the weight and the heat just didn't make me enjoy being on the bike. Now that I don't have a commute like that again I bought another newer Concours14. It puts a smile on my face everytime I ride it.
