The Trails series is amazing and so many of the characters are great. The soundtracks are good, too. We need Trails in the Sky for Switch!

@Yuriko Shokugan To add, the newest arc in Japan is actually trying to be a mix of action and turn based to make things more fluid. The bosses are still forced turn based but it speeds up battles on the field.

@Yuriko Shokugan All games listed above are in Falcom's main turn based franchise (Trails). Their action rpg series is named Ys! Also amazing!

@Hardy Joe Cold Steel 1&2 benefit from playing Zero and Ao first. Cold Steel 3 and 4 benefit from knowing all 7 previous games. That's A LOT of hours!

@Jonah Abenhaim FF and KH are great experiences too!
I would say that Trails environments are a little varied, there's towers with mystical elements, dark spooky caverns, abandoned castles, sometimes you explore cracks in time apace or other dimensions, there's mountainy areas, forests with fog, giant airships, snowy mountains with a hot spring and a snowboarding minigame, a forest hidden away from the world by dimension magic, a high tech city with escalators and a big factory, a port city separated by a big bridge in the middle that can rise up for ships, and more.
Also Trails of Cold Steel arc took a lot of Persona inspiration if you liked bonding systems that effect affinity in battles, and a school setting!

@Dario Carbone Can't say for Suikoden cause I havent played it. Xenoblade 3 is a great jrpg but for me trails as a whole is the best. I was drawn in more to the over-arching plot of the multiple games and story than the gameplay itself. Let's be honest, the gameplay of trails is pretty standard for any turn based jrpg.

This is the first game in the crossbell arc, the second arc in the trails series! the second crossbell game, Trails to Azure will come out in 2023 if yall want to get into the trails series this is an Okay place to start. The crossbell games kinda take place during the Erebonia arc aka the ColdSteel games. You won't get majorly spoiled playing Crossbell first or Cold Steel first but they show events from different points of view. I would still suggest playing the Crossbell arc before Erebonia. The main character Lloyd is also a main character in Trails into Reverie which is considered the end of the Crossbell arc and the Erebonia arc which is why the crossbell games are getting localized now. They are good rpgs and the trails series has a lot of interconnected lore. It is a decent entry point if you are interested in the series!
To comment more on the series yes playing Trails in the Sky would be helpful before playing the Crossbell games but it isn't needed in my opinion. Yes it continues the plot but not as much as ColdSteel does in my opinion. You will be like huh who is this Joshua guy whos this Oliver wacko that I read about whats up with this need to slap him with a giant stick? but honestly other than some nice little scenes in sidequests it's not THAT bad to start with crossbell. The Liberl games aka the sky games do a good job world building and setting up character arcs that end decently well in that Arc. To me Sky sets up world building and lore and characters and Crossbell builds on that world with political lore and creates its own characters while ColdSteel tries to kinda wrap up those politics along side adding more character lore for both the Liberl and Crossbell groups. This is just my opinion as a trails fan and theres probably many more with opinions who differ than mine, but I do hope you will give this series a try however you start.

@Sly Synch Yeah more new fans are always welcome no matter where they started, just not start at the 2nd or 3rd game in an arc lol

    • Sly Synch
Sly Synch 2 months ago +6

@GreyVictory1510 I get that I just think you can go into the crossbell games and still get a decent amount of world building and a lot more political set up than in liberl. But yeah starting with sky is the best. Maybe one day they will rerelease the sky games but since the English publishers are NIS now and not XSEED who did Sky I don't know how likely that is to happen. The Sky games can run on a potato tho so at least if you can launch steam you can probably launch the games lmao. Theres also the issue of some people wont play games on pc so ):
But whatever gets people interested in the trails games :)

    • GreyVictory1510
      GreyVictory1510 2 months ago +1

I see the Trails in the Sky games as the setup. You just get more out of each game after it and all these "OUHHH!" moments if you have played them. They also set up the world, factions, countries and all of that.

First Last 2 months ago +3

Just start from the beginning of any arc and see where you get from there. Sure release order is the "ideal" way to experience the overarching story. But each arc tells its own self contained story as well.

    • GreyVictory1510
      GreyVictory1510 2 months ago +4

Look at the games as Books that resolve their own sub-plots but build up on each other. You can stop and take abreaks after each one and enjoy them after the other at your own pace. Breaking it up in parts makes it less intimidating and you have as much time as you need, no one is rushing you. ^^

    • SomeRandomGuy
      SomeRandomGuy 2 months ago +7

if you look at the series in terms of individual story arcs it's not that bad. each sub-series resolves it's own conflict in a satisfactory way by the end of the arc as well as furthers the overarching story that spans the entire series.

It's part of the larger Trails series (a sub-series of the Legend of Heroes series, which all take place in the same world with returning characters throughout).
      It's separated in 3 Arcs:
      1. Sky trilogy (Trails in the Sky 1-3)
      2. Crossbell Duology (Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure)
      3. Cold Steel games
      (Trails of Cold Steel 1-4).
      and Trails to Reverie (Epilogue)
      4. Kuro no Kiseki (newest game, start of the 4th Arc)
Zero is the start of the second Arc, a new entry point, so you can start with this one. But it's a bonus if you played Sky 1-3 as 3 key characters (Estelle, Joshua and Renne) from Sky show up in these games.

I remember this a little. Is this the one where the protagonist got the Subaru ability of going back in time?

This is an awesome day. Gamestop unfortunately forgot to actually ship any of these to the store I ordered from....so I won't have this for probably 1-2 weeks. The only reason that doesn't suck more is that I'm only on Trails in the Sky FC....so I wouldn't be playing Zero today anyways....but still. This is an awesome day for fans of the series and the series as a whole.
Hopefully it sells a ton and we get the rest of the series on the Switch soon enough....XSEED....get it together or sell the rights!..lol

Collector’s edition hasn’t even shipped yet. I ordered it the day it went live back in January, possibly even in the hour it went live.

Yes, play this. Specifically, play this or the PC version, for the best experience.

      @KentStopMe Yes.
I suppose PC is 4K capable for what that's worth, but the difference in a game like this is negligible.
Basically any version except the PS4 one is ideal. The PC and Switch versions were ported from the ground up using the high resolution PC environments, but PS4 is based on the super low effort Kai port that Japan got where for some reason they used the ultra low res PSP environments.

This is 60fps on the switch too so won't the experience still be the same no?

It’s always with Nisa games. I’m starting to the Nisa is incompetent. It’s unacceptable and should never happen. This has only happened with their titles.

Is it ok to start Trails series from this game? I don't have a steam account nor a gamer PC at the moment. The trailer has piqued my interest, but I have seen a lot of negative reviews saying this is the worst part to start so I was a little bit confused.

So I own all 4 cold steel games. I'm gonna pick this one up. And I know trails in the sky is on psp. My question is, can I start from trails of cold steel 1? Or do I need to play trails in the sky and this game first?

    • Hadi
      Hadi Month ago

Trails in the sky is better for understanding the story later on. If you have trouble with the graphic of trails in the sky/zero, just finish cold steel 1 & 2, then you'll know what to play next, either finish entire cold steel or try to finish trails in the sky & zero to understand some reference/cameos they said. because the story is tied to each other.
