I have always heard about this movie for years I've either catch the middle or the end last winter it was on television and I thought is one of the best things I've ever seen I wish they would make more movies like this today every actor was right on point... I don't think they're movies like this today where every actor puts forth their best and more

The Jewish guy is calling it racist when the they were just being snobs. It’s a class thing more than any ethnic thing. The Portuguese characters are all white, this Jewish interviewer is projecting his Jewish outsider “otherness” on the Portuguese in the film. Jews will find any reason to make others “outsiders” because that’s what they feel about themselves,

    • Frank G
      Frank G 6 months ago

Who’s more “other” than Jews? Does Charlottesville ring a bell?

    • Frank G
      Frank G 6 months ago

Jews are still seen as outsiders and as “other” and they probably always will .. Adam Sandler would be taken for black anywhere in Alabama or Mississippi.

    • musicaltheatergeek79
      musicaltheatergeek79 7 months ago +1

They were considered white-adjacent (i.e., not Anglo, so not really white), which is racist. There was a time in America when Italians and Portuguese were thought of as 'ethnic.' With the rise of Latinos (i.e., Latin American descent), the boundaries of whiteness were expanded to include virtually anyone who isn't black or brown. Now more and more 'white-looking' Latinos are claiming a white identity per the U.S. census.

    • Valentina Rossi
      Valentina Rossi 7 months ago

Frank G Jews are also racists and snobs. What "otherness"?

  • Frank G
    Frank G Year ago +2

Not one mention of the Portuguese theme of this movie. And this Jewish guy who is interviewing calls them racist when the Portuguese in the film are all white and Christian. This Jewish guy would not be c side red white by the kkk. Or white Americans in general.

    • musicaltheatergeek79
      musicaltheatergeek79 7 months ago +1

Might as well repost it, since you posted the same thing twice. Anyhoo, they were considered white-adjacent (i.e., not Anglo, so not really white), which is racist. There was a time in America when Italians and Portuguese were thought of as 'ethnic.' With the rise of Latinos (i.e., Latin American descent), the boundaries of whiteness were expanded to include virtually anyone who isn't black or brown. LOl as I was commenting before, I loved this movie so so so much because I am Portuguese and it was the first time I saw any reference of Portuguese people on a Holywood movie. I loved it so so so much! Apart from all the evident stereotypes and lack of knowledge regarding Portuguese culture LOL in the movie, I passed beyond all of that and just enjoyed this so fun and innocent fairy tale, cool movie :) I will see it again tonight after so many years :):):):) Loved it so so much!

Julia of course is one of the biggest stars on the planet and it really is nice to see that all of the cast members love and adore her especially the other two girls Lili Taylor and Anabeth Gish. You can see the camaraderie and respect. They all wanted and got, to varying degrees, a career in movies and entertainment and are still going strong. Lili Taylor was great in American Crime and Julia was amazing in Osage County.

You're an idiot Andrea. The guy in the interview highlighted how racism goes beyond simply anti-black and anti-Semitic prejudice. I don't know whether he is Jewish or not (these things don't tend to concern me) but assuming you're right then contrary to your racist BS the interviewer should be commended for suggesting that other white ethnic groups apart from Jews experience prejudice. It goes to show that you're completely wrong and small-minded about Jewish people.

    • Frank G
      Frank G 6 months ago

All the Portuguese characters were white so it wasn’t racist just class bigotry cuz the Portuguese were portrayed as fishermen while the WASP da,ily was wealthy. It was all very stereotypical BS Becca’s the Portuguese in Mystic are actually well of and by no means poor fishermen.

    • Natalie Zayas-Bazan
      Natalie Zayas-Bazan 3 years ago +2

+kalia61 I think when they said 'happy' they meant positive. I think the rest of the cast didn't become as big of stars because they Are maybe more sensitive, take things more personally. In Hollywood you have to have tough skin and if you're just always a happy, positive, optimistic individual, you're going to go further than if you let things get to you.

    • Buzz Brunzell
Buzz Brunzell 5 years ago +2

@iw32 Once again, I can't argue that. With Kalia61's original post in this thread questioning Julia's happiness, and your statement that her happiness is likely due to her success, I should have said "That's who she is. I've been a fan since Pretty Woman and I've never seen her anything but giddy." I do agree that she is a capable actress and also can be quite good in particular roles. All in all, I think she was "happy" long before she was a superstar and it's a large part of her becoming one -- the audience was quickly connected to her infectious, joyful presence :D

    • kalia61
      kalia61 5 years ago +2

@iw32 its a showbusiness darling, dont be naive, not all of them want to be "huge movie stars". I agree that she has charisma but the way she was behaving during this interview you could see that she is attention seeker, no doubt she became the huge movie star, the expression of her colleagues when she said she is the the happy one tells is all....

    • Buzz Brunzell
Buzz Brunzell 5 years ago +3

@iw32 Well I suppose I can't argue that. However, I'll say Vincent D'Onofrio is held in higher regard in his ability as an actor than Julia Roberts by most of their peers and a majority of cinefiles. An 'Oscar' don't mean diddly.
