If you dislike this content so much, why even bother coming here?

I don't think the media is objectively reporting as to why people have such strong criticism against the Captain Marvel movie. Here is what I have collected after reviewing lots of discussions that people have had online: 1) the Captain Marvel character should not have been introduced so late in the Thanos story arc because its unnecessary, bad storytelling and it happens way too close to Avengers Endgame; 2) Captain Marvel was declared as the most powerful character in Marvel and MCU which is not consistent with how that character was portrayed in the comics, meaning she has received a major power buff; 3) the Captain Marvel comics have not been very commercially popular and the character has suffered numerous reboots that were not embraced by fans; 4) it appears that Marvel is desperate to elevate Captain Marvel to counter DC's Wonder Woman for the sake of profit and marketshare; 5) Captain Marvel is nowhere near at the same iconic level with the same brand recognition as Wonder Woman, DC's Captain Marvel/Shazaam, Jean Grey, Harley Quinn, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Black Panther; 6) Disney/Marvel is trying to manufacture an artificial cinematic watershed moment by marketing this as the first female hero movie, even though there have been many movie franchises with strong female led heroes; 7) people want strong, well written characters that happen to be female/POC/etc not characters who are intentionally built around identity politics; 8) the Captain Marvel character introduces major plot holes because she didn't help the universe/Earth when it was in grave danger multiple times; 9) people are tired of movies that preach at them when they just want to be entertained and are tired/frustrated with culture wars; 10) super heroe fatigue is slowly increasing; 11) the trailers/marketing appear to be boring; 12) some think the main role was not cast properly based on appearance and previous body of work and preferred other actresses; 13) Disney/Marvel/lead actress have explicitly stated that Captain Marvel will be a strongly feminist, activist movie; 14) the lead actress has used language on multiple occasions that appears to state that a particular gender and race is over-represented and their voice/influence should be reduced and other groups should be elevated (refer to Wrinkle in Time, Lucy Crystal Awards, InStyles 'patriarchy', Hollywood Reporter 'can women even exist in the world', Firstpost - 'talk about feminism all day', TSA and other comments); 15) lead actress promoted her political views as part of her Captain Marvel press junket, which no other MCU actor had done, despite those actors also being equally political; 16) lead actress supported a Go Fund Me to help send disadvantaged girls to see her movie, appears to exclude disadvantaged boys, appears as strong conflict of interest because her movie and studio benefit from positive publicity and ticket sales; 17) people just want to watch a fun movie without politics or agendas and want escapism; 18) and, of course, there are right wing and left wing trolls who want this movie to fail/succeed based on their extreme points of view fueled by hate of their 'enemy' on the other side.

+MisterIdjit Yeah, I know the history of Captain Marvel. Your argument about Monica has merit. I recognize that. However, if Marvel wants to introduce Captain Marvel (a white female) and Spectrum (a black female), then you could also argue that what their doing is perfectly fine, especially if Marvel is trying to setup Captain Marvel as their answer to DC's Wonder Woman and Superman, with regards to power and gender appeal. You could also argue for Monica/Captain Marvel and cancel Spectrum. At least, with the current rumored approaches, you get both characters and still get their backstories, for the most part. Who would you choose as a five person all-female Avenger team?

+rainstrmds Love how so many of them are anti-gun as well. They seriously expect to lead a revolution with slacktivism? The market is catching wise to the fact that responding to the petulant screams of the constantly offended sub-class of online outrage mongers is doing little to line their wallets. After the poor performance of Solo as well as the plethora of Star Wars toys in bargain stores, I suspect we're going to see a reversal of this nonsense pretty soon.

    • MisterIdjit
      MisterIdjit Month ago

+rainstrmds Captain Marvel was not simply changed from a man to a woman. First was Mar-Vell, then Rambeau (female), Genis-Vell, Phyla-Vell (female), Khn'nr, Noh-Varr, and the SEVENTH one was Carol Danvers. She is last in a long line. If the character was going to be female, it SHOULD have been Rambeau, not Danvers. The notion that a POC is not marketable as a superhero is demonstrably false.
This character's power set also feels more comparable to Superman instead of Wonder Woman. Sif would have been a better fit by those standards. In addition, by touting CM as "more powerful than Thanos," it takes away the character's vulnerability. It's like playing a video game with an invincibility cheat: it's fun for awhile, but without the challenge the experience gets stale fast.

I don't like 'woke' people because they wear their 'wokeness' as a sticker of self-righteousness even though they do nothing to advance social issues; in fact, they do the opposite and divide people even further with their extreme points of view. The typical 'woke' person cannot back their arguments with facts and scatter when you provide a logical counterargument. Lastly, 'woke' people do not acknowledge the great progress that society has made in creating a more fair and level playing field where people have the opportunity to accomplish something and be recognized for their own individual merits; instead, they see the world as always on fire (never better) and they need to lead a revolution (failing to realize that the battle was fought and won a long time ago). Is society perfect? No, there are some things we can do better, but it is so much better than where it started. But to a 'woke' person, we are still living in the Dark Ages.

For those that don't know the true history of Captain "Mar-Vell" amazingly not mentioned here. Captain Mar-Vell was a man and more importantly a spit back in DC's face by copying Shazam. He originally was made to be because DC and other companies kept copying Marvels characters(i.e. Why Spider-Woman became a half written character over night to copyright the name).
Mar-vell's comics failed multiple times even after these guys thought "I got an idea to reboot this character... He will now be a woman."
...Guess what happened it failed .... again.
So badly now they rubbed the now "her" character out by having Rogue, from the X-men, hold her too long and not only gained her Superman-esk powers from the experience but Carol Danvers' mind became trapped in Rogues'. I
Professor X even had to trap Danvers in some kind of mind prison because she became a evil person constantly tormenting Rogue.
    That's her true history.

If they wanted to do something new with Ms. Marvel, why couldn't they have given her character a new situation to face? Why even change her design? I get why some people would want to get rid of the legless tights, but the rest of the costume was fine as is!

    • TF2Fan101
      TF2Fan101 Month ago

+Jeremiah Elijah Again, you have a point. I just think they could've done something different compared to what they actually ended up doing with her. The change in costume, I can deal with. The change in her personality, I can't deal with. Had they made her closer to her version in EMH, then maybe it could have worked. As it is, however, the current incarnation of Captain Marvel is regarded by many fans as one of the worst characters in current Marvel comics, and yet Marvel doesn't seem to get why people are so upset. How many times has Captain Marvel been relaunched, and how many times have those relaunches failed? If something isn't working, then maybe they should consider why it isn't working instead of relaunching it again.

    • Jeremiah Elijah
      Jeremiah Elijah Month ago

+TF2Fan101 Yeah, but nowadays I think too many people are just looking at Carol as this feminist icon instead of as her own character. I'd be upset if she just replaced the OG Captain Marvel while he was still alive (Riri and America Chavez, I'm looking at you), but Mar-Vell is LONG dead, so we needed a role to fit, and I believe Carol fits the bill. It makes sense, imo.

    • TF2Fan101
      TF2Fan101 Month ago

+Jeremiah Elijah You have a point on both accounts. Avengers #200 was just... *Hurls* (Although that really doesn't have anything to do with her character personally), and it is thanks to the MCU that Ant-Man (Both versions) and Hawkeye are popular. And yet you seemed to overlook their portrayals in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, which gave a good majority of the Avengers focus (Including the minor heroes), and even featured a pretty cool version of Carol Danvers WITHOUT that whole 'raped by her son from the future in order to give birth to him' plot. That said, while Ant-Man and Hawkeye were popularized by the MCU, their characters were more or less the same without too heavy alterations. Captain Marvel (And I'm going by the comics, not the movie), on the other hand, had a good character (Avengers #200 notwithstanding), and while I do think it's good for characters to change and develop, what they did with Carol was probably not what people wanted.

    • Jeremiah Elijah
      Jeremiah Elijah Month ago

+TF2Fan101 Because she also wasn't a very known character, either. Remember that time she was raped by her son and taken to another dimension while the Avengers just watched? They did the same for Hank Pym and Hawkeye in the MCU.

They were both heroes at the same time in the comics, and to rewrite history to make a white woman the inspiration for a strong black superhero is problematic on multiple levels. Furthermore, the fact that Monica was not mentioned in an "origins of Captain Marvel" video was a glaring omission considering she held the title WAY before Danvers did. It is also particularly egregious since we're just past February.

I find pretty cool how Marvel's being chill with all the backlash that the Captain Marvel movie's been given.

William L. Tarver Probably because most of the "backlash" are from trolls or misogynistic jerks who haven't even seen the movie.
