  • Celeste Headlee sees finding a career which will truly inspire you is much like dating - it takes time and lots of experiments. And the ideal job is no more realistic than the dream man or woman.

Celeste hosts "On Second Thought" on NPR from Atlanta and is a professional opera singer.

    JUST a mechanic?
I’m a mechanic and struggling with the lack of respect from society and even my family. True story.
I guess I should have been a doctor or a lawyer.

Lost me when she said "Purpose" we all know it's all about the "Money."
This world is ran on Money, so in order to live like you deserve you need a certain amount of "Money" to sustain the life style you want....Purpose anything else applies to those who have lived the good life all if not most of their life.
To exist is "Debt" so there for we need "Money" in order to live the good life. MONEY will determine your living conditions, your lifestyle, your location, and lastly some of your leisure activities...
When you're broke or with limited income you become hopeless, depressed, angry, vengeful, , stressful, envious, and just miserable....add MONEY to the equation and watch how all that turns completely around...
Lastly, a "FOOLISH Person with money will lose it all."

Find work that is NOT WORK to you. Its usually easy, forget seeking a job, work for someones dream, do YOUR dreams. Do u draw, paint, dance, sing at work? What did u do in class at school that got u in trouble. Doodling on PeeChee, desk, draw people, cars, etc

Great talk, but I didn't understand the 4th "homework" assignment: "Which part do you enjoy?" Part of what, exactly?
    1. What do you like about your job?
    2. What do you think you do well?
    3. What do others say you do well?
    4. Which part do you enjoy?
    Any thoughts?

*this speech actually makes a lot of sense, I realize some of the jobs I've done I never knew existed, or never looked into because "oh man the name just sound boring" but in reality, the title is not everything. I've always been a passion over profit person. Not in a humble way, I just honestly cannot imagine working somewhere just for a paycheck. Although I did do that in retail when I didn't know any better. So now, I'm creating my dream job. And anyway, I do believe it doesn't exist. Every job has flaws. Great speech, beautiful voice, wouldn't mind your job. You've really got the best of both worlds!!* :)

    Opera Singer --> Broadcast Journalist?
Opera singer is speaking there is no listening.
    Opera Singer =/= Broadcast Journalist?
Broadcast Journalist is expected to listen and not to talk.

    • Celeste Headlee
      Celeste Headlee 9 месяцев назад

You are wrong on both counts. Opera singers have to listen very very carefully to an entire orchestra and a whole cast of singers. And journalists have to be careful speakers and construct questions strategically.

You struck a chord @ 3.30 "we are terrible at choosing the right job"...Why is that...I have had this question on my mind for many years now, and I'm convinced that if we are all paid equally people will find the jobs they are good at? As nations, communities, we ascribe more money, more power and status to certain jobs (so called important jobs such as doctors, scientist, investment banker...really!!!) so instead of people doing what they truly love, we all gravitate towards the need for status, power, money and leaving the mission of doing what we really love to do to tomorrow (which sadly never comes). I know it's easier said than done but this is just my opinion. Even if we continue chasing money, fame instead of our purpose or mission to do the jobs we love, my hope is that we try and go back to doing what we really love after we have acquired all the earthly possessions.

My mission would not be attainable in this modern world. Build a house in a nice place, and live of the nature, fishing and hunting, and chopping wood. If i do this i will be thrown in jail and fined, and then they will force me to find a job once im out. Its like a damn colony. If you dont work for the big man, you have nothing and have no rights. These are the people at the top making billions and make the rules as they buy influence to keep their own wealth based freedoms. We break our back, and they make a fortune. Studies have shown that the happiest people on earth are the people in places like Siberia and the jungle far from civilization. Mental illness is almost non existent there, because they live a natural life. Compare it to the west, where we have a mental health crisis. Anti depressants and sedatives are essential just to make it these days for many. Taxes, rent, bills, having enough money for food. And of course, spending you whole day at work just so you can keep this cycle up. Yeah, real brilliant this world people have built. Add overpopulation to the mix. What a party.

go save up some money and move to a new place maybe somewhere quieter smaller population town. what you seek isn't really the lifestyle more so an escape. if you think its hard to do so maybe take a weekend holiday to somewhere quieter see if that is what you like? and then ask yourself what is it that you like about the change don't think about what you hate about your current situation (which is not in your control)

Can relate strongly. I've been given to dreams of returning to a nomadic, hunter, gatherer lifestyle. It's what our spirits crave and we know deep down we cannot sustain the modern industrial complex and military complex it breeds. Until we stop oppressing and killing we will not evolve. The best we can do is make time to appreciate the natural world...that's a choice we have power to make....best done without the trappings that bind us. It's still a gift to be here when we look through a spiritual lens.

    • Charlie Beam
Charlie Beam 9 месяцев назад +1

I believe that the people at the top rise to the top because they are afraid. A lot of times people use money as personal value, they run from the idea of being less valuable. It's fear. People even go as far as kill for money. Fear might be the same reason why you are resentful of society and wish to (literally) run from it. If you want to live off the land go do it. If that's your dream it's worth working for it (and it's obtainable). But basing your life and perception off of fear is no more healthy, and I'd check that.
