  • MILFORD SOUND - New Zealand Roadtrip - Fiordland South Island
Heading North from Slope Point it’s finally time to campervan in the Fiordland National Park of the South Island New Zealand. Surprise- It’s full of sand flies. Even the viscous swarms couldn’t ruin the beauty of Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound. (Maybe a little bit though) This week's agenda we’re visiting:
    Lookout Point
    South Arm Campsite
Mt. Burns Hike in the Rain
    Mirror Lake in Milford Sound
Key Summit Hike in Milford Sound
    Retreating from Sand Flies
Searching for Kea in Milford Sound
    Monowai Campsite

Please don’t wash your dishes in our lakes. It’s terrible for keeping our lakes clean.

Shoulder season around March. I believe (but could be wrong) that it's almost always rainy/wet in the Fiordlands/Milford.

you obviously can't have rain, have wind, have cold - you've obviously not been raised in Britain?

You left out bugs! (BTW- on my visits to both London and two weeks touring scotland- we did have a full experience of crummy weather. That Scotland cold- we still use it to refer to anytime we can't get dry and the rain is one degree above turning to snow!)

Hey, where is that lookout point, I tried looking in Google Maps and can't find it :/

  • Thorfinn986_doesn't_do_average

    Except for sandflies,nasty critters.

  • Thorfinn986_doesn't_do_average

Well done!,not many do it like you did, always stickin to well worn tracks and roads, awesome!! and no poisonous insects or animals to worry about, unlike Australia. ;-)

We did get off the beaten path when we could----and those sandflies would chase us away ASAP. New Zealands biggest lie is the "no natural predators" myth....I bet a swarm of sandflies could strip the meat of any animal around in just a night. :)

Awesome videos guys. Currently planning a 4 week trip of new zealand on a campervan and your videos are by far the best resource I have found. Funny and interesting dialogue, good content, good editing. One of my new favourite youtube channels! (did I mention I am on my second round of watching the NZ videos?)

Thanks Ricardo! That means a ton- we put a lot of work into editing so we're glad someone out there is noticing! Hope you have a great time on your four week trip (and that you don't encounter too many sand flies).

Hey guys, I like your videos! In January I'll be heading over to NZ on a WHV, can't wait. I have a question though, what kind of camera/lenses are you using to film and shoot pictures with? :)

We used a GoPro Hero 4 and a Samsung NX2000. We can't really recommend the NX2000 though....the footage that was usable looked great but the camera really struggled to focus. We recently moved over to a Panasonic G7 and are much happier. Also, and you may have seen me talking about this already- we had a gimbal to use with our gopro for all of NZ. It made everything way better.

Milford gets around 6.5 Metres (260 Inches) of rain each year so rainy season starts in January and ends in December ;-) It's the wettest in NZ and one of the wettest in the world.

+Melissa Johnson this was April 2016. I think rainfall is pretty evenly spread throughout the year. Milford in particular is usually cloudy. I think the bright and shiny pictures of fiordland are more the exception than the rule.

Thanks! This was about nine months into our trip and we finally were getting the hang of how/what to film. By this point it was a ton of fun as well and it had become a full blown part of daily life.

Really beautiful vlog. In 2015 my wife and I were "lucky" to have a travel agency make a mistake in our travel plans. They made up for it by giving us a roundtrip helicopter ride from Queenstown to Milford Sound. Anyone nervous about making your own plans to anywhere in the South Pacific check out duatravel.com. Great people that really know their stuff.

A free helicopter ride is a heck of a way to make up for just about anything!
