  • 'To Kill a Mockingbird' was never on Jeff Daniels' school curriculum. Now he's playing Atticus Finch in Aaron Sorkin's Broadway adaptation.

I'm not American. Why did Stephen act so shocked at him not having read To Kill A Mockingbird? Btw, on an entirely different note, does anyone else think Jeff Daniels has a slight resemblance here to George Bush Sr. ??

At 8:20, what's with Stephen putting up his feet on the desk? It's such rude, ill-mannered behavior, even here in the U.S. In some other cultures it's considered insulting to display to others the soles of the shoes the way Stephen did.

    • Neil O'Neal
      Neil O'Neal 2 месяца назад

+supercool239 ya, you make valid points. I just think sometimes nowadays people get a bit too casual in a public facing role. For instance, I can't imagine Johnny Carson doing that.

    • supercool239
      supercool239 2 месяца назад

Neil O'Neal they are not similar at all, showing your bare ass is much worse then showing your shoe soles.
Also, showing your shoe soles would only be considered rude if he was in a small, private or personal situation like siting at home with acquaintances, it’s not rude at all in front of an audience who would be expecting unorthodox things to happen. Also the crowd didn’t make a sound or a big deal out of it nor did Jeff so not that much people found it offensive

    • Neil O'Neal
      Neil O'Neal 2 месяца назад

+supercool239 It's clear what Stephen was saying jokingly, but Intentionally exposing the soles of your footwear, in a full frontal way, is similar to mooning which is considered jarring or offensive or rude or shocking. Stephen did that to the entire audience. Plain bad manners.

    • supercool239
      supercool239 2 месяца назад

he was just joking around. it was like stephen saying 'let me tell you how many shows i do' in a jokingly laid back way that would not be considered rude at all

Interesting Trivia: the actor "Jerome," whom Daniels mentions, is Jerome Collamore whose debut on Broadway was in a 1918 production of Hamlet. Collamore went on to appear in 13 more Broadway productions, 12 movies/TV shows, and apparently a number of Off-Broadway productions. His last appearance was in a 1987 film titled Five Corners. Collamore died that year (at the age of 95) before the film was released. What a trouper!

8 shows a week for a year, saying the same lines over and over again. Like imagine watching a movie every day for a year, except you gotta act it out too. I don't know how they do it, I would die of boredom. Or being a teacher and teaching the same lesson every day or week for years, I don't know how they do it either. I need novelty and variety in my life.

If one is really an "actor" - and you PLUG INTO a character from all your preparation &/or you're riding it from the seat of your pants with "dangerous" improv... you can always discover new emotional/expressive/verbal/body/mind movement facets and express them in subtly various ways like a freak'n' fractal mandala endlessly repeating finite forms in infinite ways.
And the "rush" is also the unpredictable to gratificatying connections - or the RISK of the LACK OF - to varying audiences - "often" healthier than MOST drugs even in "reasonable doses". Keeps ya fresh. It's a born talent that can be developed in training - and with life experience, more so.
And if you have a Lifetime monster role like Atticus with a complex or nuanced character - it keeps the car running a long time, show after show. But then there are matinees or nights where you're FLAT - maybe you partied or STUPIDLY second guessed your life choices in ENDLESS MENTAL loops the night before ... but that's true for any job that "doesn't occasionally" require drinking your mind out of your skull to do a "good job", right? :) :( :D
