A young boy, inspired by the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, dreams of going up into space. But his dream doesn't go as planned years later, as he becomes the only survivor of a mission to Mars.
Stranded on the planet, he's unable to send out any communication and has no way to get back. But he comes across a way to send one last message back to earth -- an important photo to inspire others in the future.
Director Andrew Finch creates an ambitious sci-fi journey about what it means to persevere and leave a legacy -- even when circumstances look dire or bleak.
Finch was inspired to make his film by an alternate, never-broadcast speech by Richard Nixon, written in case the Apollo 11 crew never returned from the moon in 1969. The speech serves as a jumping-off point for his own exploration of heroism and inspiration, tempered with an elegant sense of elegy and melancholy.
With beautiful cinematography, incredible special effects and stellar production design, this sci-fi short -- which took Finch four and a half years to make -- is a feast for the eyes, with a visual panache that could easily compete with today's blockbusters.
But the film's emotional impact is rooted in the astronaut's dilemma, the fundamental fear of being alone in the universe -- and the inspiration we create to matter in the world, even if we may not live to see the consequences.

Loved the sets and effects. The simplistic "plot" - not so much (a positive message doesn't make up for that). But maybe just not my cup of tea and others can enjoy the subtlety.

Did anyone realize that the speech given for the dead Mars astronauts is the actual speech that was written in the case that the moon mission failed? It was never used because the moon mission was a success, but it was published a number of years ago and it was well written and touching. I was pleased to hear it in this video with only the word "Moon" changed to "Mars".

wow. masterclass storytelling. brilliant. So profound on more than a few levels. And more accommodating than most with respect to viewer intelligence.... not spoon-feeding every single idea. This moves briskly with significant gaps in the narrative and yet everything is understood perfectly and felt deeply. bravo.

The indomitable human spirit! Just as the last survivor saw the moon landing as a boy, so, too, did the woman in the street become enthralled by the photo of the Martian dawn he sent back in defiance of death. Artwork like this renews hope for our species. So beautiful!

...and also negotiate the velocity difference between Earth and Mars, plus eat and breathe in that cramped capsule for the months to come.
Spacecrafts are hard pressed to get to Mars even one-way. The crews ought to manufacture return fuel on Mars or wait for the supplies trickle in with the subsequent service flights from Earth. Another option would be to use non-chemical propulsion.

+Anonymous5253, actually reddish rock. But even for a desert, Mars has more livelihood in its scenery than Moon. Its sky can be beautiful at times, and for people who have fondness for the silent serenity of deserts it still may be a place to visit, even to stay for a while. There are people here on Earth who are already volunteering for one-way trip to Mars.

vee gomi the only way I'm going into space is if we're going to Mars. We should've already seen the day when planet to planet colonization was a thing but it isn't! And also, going onto a floating, grey rock with a bunch of craters in it is such a boring place to live at lol. However, moon jumping sounds amazing.

@+The Awkward Assassin, Perhaps, like most of us, you love "the idea" of space exploration. In truth every single human effort at exploring any new Environment, Location, Continent or Celestial body has been fraught with peril (both foreseeable and unforeseeable) and has demanded , and perhaps always will demand, a heavy toll in human lives and suffering. It is unrealistically optimistic to think that we can every fully prepare for the risks inherent in the exploration of the new and unknown. This is perhaps the primary reasons that that small tribe of explorers are viewed as heroes, for without their trailblazing sacrifices we would probably still be a bunch of apes cowering in the trees afraid to walk upright across the Savannah and consequently everything that followed would have been impossible.
