If you want to achieve your goals, don't focus on them: Reggie Rivers at TEDxCrestmoorParkED

  • Former Denver Broncos running back Reggie Rivers discusses how focusing on your goals is the one sure way NOT to achieve them. With humor and insight he goes on to explain how focusing on your behaviors is how you achieve goals.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

You delivered it the best way, starting with the emotional part of the story as childish and it may sound everybody can relate to it somehow then personally I started to see the meaning of that in many levels and aspects of life. On a business side, we say to ourselves : Networking, Networking, Networking and all what is not networking is waste of time for the business, while you can just say Hi to people (the behavior) and try to be open then you will find yourself at least half way there through networking (the goal).

Very impressive! Focus on your behavior instead of the goal you've set. it'll get you closer to your goal and keep you motivated.
I'll definitely keep that in mind and put that into practice! Thx for the video:)

    1. Set goal
    2. Forget the goal and determine the process you need to achieve the goal
    3. Fall in love with the process
    4. Do the process without thinking about the goal
    5. Eventually, achieve the goal

I still don't get it. How do you think about it differently whether you focus on the steps it takes you to complete a goal compared to what you do today, tomorrow, and this week? I know reactions are important, but why does a behavior make it happen and not actually forming a habit/ doing it outright? Like, whether you have a bad or great reaction.

    • Jacob Lloyd
      Jacob Lloyd Month ago

Nvm, I think I get it now. You can't control results, so focusing on them is pointless. But, you can take care of what you put into it. A strong path=strong results. A strong goal does not equal strong results. Like, raising crops and having a bad yield. It doesn't mean you're a bad farmer..just other factors chipping away at it.

  • Dom

So if you want something it would be good to think how to get it. Like, I am hungry but I shouldn't just yell in my head "I am hungry I am hungry" but open the fridge or what? I don't get it.

Wow! I realized one thing! We should focus on our actions to achieve the goal. Not on the goals! You will just day-dream about your goal all day long, but that will not do any success at all. Instead, we should focus on our actions NOW that can little by little achieve our goals and objectives in life with respect to proper time management and discipline. To cut it short, we should be ACTION-BASED! Thank you TEDx! Thank you and God Bless! Now that's an idea worth spreading!

Setting a goal is a THOUGHT.
Reaching a goal is a RESULT.
    Having a goal is SUCCESS.
    What we focus on GROWS.
I understand what Reggie is saying but fundamentally I disagree.
If you want to achieve your goals, don't consciously focus on them because the subconscious works in mysterious ways. :-) M!
