  • The Maori people of New Zealand came from eastern Polynesia in waves of canoes sometime between 1250 and 1300 AD. Over the centuries, they developed a rich and complex society that included a fierce and terrifying warrior culture. Europeans described the Maori warriors as large men, although women could be warriors as well, who had extensive facial tattoos. While they looked fearsome, their intense physical appearance is only the start of what made these warriors so terrifying.

@Craig Gillett It'd be helpful if you identify what part(s) of this video you find offensive or in error regarding Maori. I'm a Maori & studied Maori geography at university as an electoral paper ie an indigenous perspective. I disagree with your reference of 'white privilege' & how Maori / Pakeha interacted during colonial days.

    • Craig Gillett
      Craig Gillett Month ago +6

TopTenz Really sorry team, as a kiwi 🥝 🇳🇿🇳🇿I am really disappointed in the video. Your message was offensive to our indigenous peoples, typical of post colonial ‘white privilege’ perspectives, and represents a view of the colonisation process that nearly destroyed an entire people in a patronising manner. As a proud New Zealander I am offended. I find myself questioning the accuracy of your other content I’ve watched. Such a shame. I used to really enjoy your work. I recommend you remove this post or in the very least address the terrible wrongs that the British Empire committed during and after the colonisation process .

Cook was not the victim as portrayed in this video. He and his men raided indigenous settlements and would be regarded as a pedophile in today's terms because he kidnapped young native boys on his travels. For example, Cook kidnapped a young Priest called Tupaea and kept him below deck, only to bring him up to navigate for him.

So, Lieutenant James Cook was simply a "navigator" on his epic first voyage, was he?
Departing Plymouth Harbour, England, in August 1768, Cook's tiny plump bark, 'Endeavour', arrived at Aotearoa "in October 1767", did it? (I wonder why that small ship was surprisingly fast, getting from Britain to the western Pacific *before* its departure date - but then took 2.5 years to travel the short distance between Unzud and the Strayan east coast?! :-o )

How about what the Brits did to millions of people around the world to build the British Empire? Nothing more civilized than the Maori’s.
Heck, let’s include all the European conquests in Africa, South America, Asia, and virtually every inhabited island in the world.
What they did to those human beings disgusts me much more than anything the Maori’s ever did.
How about a top Tenz list of the barbaric ways Europeans tortured the indigenous people in the Caribbean, the Aztecs, and all of South America. Must include how they tortured the Jamaicans. That was some horrifically sick stuff.

Bro learn to pronounce the words properly and do your research properly if you're going to make videos about other cultures.
Mere = Meh Reh not Mere.
    Hongi hika = Ho-ngi not Hong-I
Hapuu is a sub group of an iwi (tribe) not specifically a war party.
Also the first encounter was with Abel Tasman... not James Cook
Mana is prestige (or more a metaphysical property of a person and their power) not a person's spirit
Awesome your doing videos about maaori culture but make sure you DO YOUR RESEARCH PROPERLY.
