  • While the U.S. summer TV season has typically been regarded as one of reruns and reality fare, CBS made a big splash when it premiered the science-fiction drama Under the Dome in June 2013. The event series, based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King and produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, was quickly renewed for a second season. The sophomore run was this summer’s top scripted series, with 11 million viewers. Under the Dome has been ordered for a third installment, set to air in summer 2015.
Neal Baer serves as showrunner on Under the Dome. A doctor himself, Baer was a writer and executive producer on the medical drama ER, and also was an executive producer on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He met with TV Drama Weekly’s Anna Carugati to discuss the drama genre and its evolution, and also to provide insight into the work that goes into Under the Dome.
