  • Aminah L. Ahmad (formerly Llanchie Stevenson) was America's first African-American ballerina performing at the Radio City Music Hall and also in the Dance Theatre of Harlem before her acceptance to Islam. She relates her experience in the ballet world as an African American and what led her to becoming a Muslim.

I too loved ballet and as a child started taking lessons. I lived in Nairobi, Kenya, went in for many competitions and was constantly winning all the cups. I just loved it. Being on stage was magical and I responded to the music with intense feeling. I wanted to do ballet professionally but my father stopped that when I was 15 because he thought I should concentrate on my academic studies. To this day I still love the ballet and watch it when ever I can, and I am so glad this lady, who I have never heard of before - so I have learnt something - got to experience that joy for herself also and am happy that she found the religion that she was comfortable with. I have heard that some places take older woman for ballet lessons just so that they can enjoy it and get some very valued exercise. Now that I am 71 I am currently searching for one of these to join. I live in Canberra so if anyone knows of any, please contact me. Thank you.

Jesus Christ would’ve said “ keep going my child.” As long as you don’t love ballet more than him meaning ; putting ballet first, he would’ve helped you continue your future in ballet. Ballet is not about showing your body in a sexual manner. You are not showing off your body for men , it’s not a strip club . I believed she gave up too easily. I respect her decision though and her belief. I just wish she Would’ve continue.

It's just mind-boggling to think that she wasn't allowed to dance in certain places. What a shameful history America has. She prevailed in spite of such racism, which is amazing. I've never heard of her - what an amazing story she has to tell, what an interesting life and career.

    • Jeramy Dungan

It sucks that she ended her career for religion. Her reasons for converting to Islam seem pretty superficial. I can't understand why the way women were treated appealed to her. Some people like feeling part of something bigger than them, of belonging, and of having a lot of structure in their lives...not me!Too bad
"Allah" doesn't appreciate the beauty of dance and how it contributes to the world.

As a non-Muslim, I respect her and her path through life. She spoke in the video about "listening to the teachings....that women don't perform in front of men." Not all Muslims would agree with that. Perhaps she was actually listening to conservative male scholars interpreting her religion for her.
Today there are practicing Muslims involved in ballet dancing, such as the Australian Muslim convert Stephanie Kurlow and an Egyptian woman named Engy El Shazly. They do not feel as though they are forced to choose between their religion or doing ballet.

I'd like to ask her: If the whole world were Muslim would Ballet exist? The answer would be no. Does she think that this is a beautiful perspective? Wouldn't it be a huge loss for humanity?Does she remember when she fell in love with ballet as a child? Her pure, natural, unadulterated instincts attracted her to classical dancing. Then came religion!!!!! I respect her choice but I'm glad many people think differently enough so this great art will continue existing.

For those who want to turn this around and use it as propaganda against Islam all I have to say is you're clinging to straws because she was and she still is a charismatic, clever, independant & talented woman who didnt choose to transition from a life of 'freedom' in a time of racial intolerance to 'oppression' where she felt liberated in the modesty of Islam - I'd like to draw attention to the paradoxes and what people view as freedom and oppression. Rather, it was a transition from an unfulfilled and discontented life - despite living her dream - to a life of true contentment and purpose. Dreams are glamorous & hopeful fantasies of constant happiness and success, but only until you reach your dream and realise that you're still empty, or worse miserable, is when you can contemplate on how your goals without the worship and pleasure of God were just delusions of this finite world, especially if it only ever served you and your ego. It takes a deep, soulful and seeking mind to look for the truth and purpose of life. It takes openness & curiousity to look into places others dare not. It takes courage to accept the truth where others will shun it. She was and still is a deep, courageous soul. Unlike the sad people who want to call her oppressed.
And if you're a Christian who's offended at her conversion, because you think Islam is some weird, cruel cult religion. Its not. Its an Abrahamic faith and its TRUE monotheism unadulterated.
If we are too extreme I invite you to watch this.
    Bible vs Quran Experiment ru-clip.com/video/fCQ0svB0UUU/видео.html
The Bible is not as fluffy as you'd like to believe.
In Islam there are verses from God to carry out His punishment on earth to cleanse the sinner so that he is not punished in the afterlife, but thats not before a court trial takes place with a righteous judge.
And there's no references in Islam to say you must force the christians and jews or disbelievers to become Muslim or you have to kill them, no! Nowhere. There is a verse that commands us to defend ourselves if we are attacked first, which is a basic human right. That is it.
Take the time to read an authentic translation of the Quran with sincerity and you'll see its not what the media and right-wing extremists make it out to be.

To each their own. I grew up in a Muslim society. It gets dated, and extremely restrictive. I am the opposite of whatever organized religions preach. I love the idea of free will, and to be kind to one another not because of divine entities, but because you are good. I guess, one has to live on either side and decide for themselves what they want in life. Happy that she found her 'calling', but I do wish she stayed on as a Ballerina. That would be so much cooler.

You said - 'By 2020 Islam will far exceed Christianity'? Where did you pull THAT 'fact' out from? Your a**hole? 2020 is 2 years away, there are 2.4 billion Christians and 1.8 billion Muslims. I don't think that's going to be possible. I know you love your religion, etc, but you do realise that TODAY more then ever, there are more Muslims LEAVING Islam than ever. Just look at the mushrooming Ex-Muslim websites. Also, you will be hard pressed to convince me that Islam is 'the true' religion. Muslims in so many Muslim majority countries don't allow or make it very difficult for Muslims to leave Islam. That is a FACT in countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Yemen, Afghanistan, Egypt, Malaysia, Brunei, etc, etc. No other religion imposes these restrictions of their members, only Islam. It tells me just how WEAK Islam is as a religion and how weak Muslims are when it comes to their faith. Only a weak religion imposes these cult like restrictions. Muslims like to claim Jesus, Moses and Abraham, etc as 'Muslim'. Truth is, they were ALL JEWS! So stop kidding yourself and trying to fool the non-Muslim world. Also, there is NO such thing as a 'last or final' prophet. There have been countless prophets AFTER Muhammad and there are even many more today. ALL just as 'true' today as yesterday's prophets, (including Muhammad, Jesus, the Buddha, Osho, Baha'u'llah, etc). I'm not here to defend any religion. but usually the religion and it's believers that shout - 'we are the only true divine revelation' - is usually the one that is the most flawed and false.

Fastest growing are actually the NONES (No belief in organised religion). So, should she have joined the NONES, going by your point about the 'fastest growing'? Islam is the fastest growing because the majority, read - majority of Muslims are from developing countries, have more children, have a younger mean population and many of them are poorly educated. There are of course wealthy Muslims, but they are by far a small minority. There are poor Christians (in Ghana, Peru, The Philippines, Timor Leste, etc) and Jews too, but by comparision to their total population, they have more wealth and are better educated. That's a fact. Peace

in my opinion you have not learn the most esencial of ballet life and transition. for me you are defintly lost person still looking to be axcepted.
its ok to practic your religion at home at your whay and make that magic conecton with god. but never make it to extreme and ask anyone what to do with your life at major age. and remember , religions are created to make miserable the life of insecure peopel like you.
